Donna Gibson lives on the first floor, in a unit with a well-tended garden. She said Borutski stopped by her patio for coffee almost every morning, often wearing camouflage pants or shorts and a T-shirt.

They would share coffee and a smoke. She had no idea about his violent past. “Like, wow. Just can’t believe it.”

She said he was handy around the complex, working the gardens and often walking around with a bottle of frozen water.

Mask lived in fear of her husband for years, and was terrified on Tuesday when she learned that police were pursuing a gunman across the Ottawa Valley. The gunman left three women dead in his wake.

Basil Joseph Borutski, 57, faces three charges of first-degree murder in connection with those killings. All of the victims formed relationships with Borutski in the years after his marriage to Mask permanently collapsed.

Mary Ann Mask was driving to a doctor’s appointment in Barry’s Bay on Tuesday morning when the Ontario Provincial Police contacted her on a cellphone and told her to get to a safe place, her brother told the Citizen. She immediately drove to Bonnechere Provincial Park and stayed in the park office until police told her it was safe to leave.

Mask told court that Borutski coerced her into copying out and signing a marriage contract that he wrote as part of their 1994 reconciliation. In the contract, Mask gives full custody of her children and control of all of her finances to Borutski because of what’s described as a dissociative identity disorder.

“I’ve tried to take the children from him (Borutski), not allowing any access whatsoever,” the contract reads. “I have made false statements about him to convince authorities he should not have custody. I have destroyed the children’s lives unknowingly …

“I want to make sure my husband has the right to take care of the children and all financial decisions. I believe he’s the only person that I can trust to do what is right and fair for everyone concerned. I am doing this on my own free will and I am not being coerced or threatened.”

The Eganville Leader reported that people who had had dealings with the suspect sought protection from the OPP after hearing of the shootings. One told police the suspect had allegedly posted a list of people against whom he was seeking revenge. Others said they had received phone calls in recent days from the suspect threatening them if they didn’t give him money.

I think his ex-wife was on this list. There is an article that removed this part from the story. I will try to find more info on this "list".

ETA: this sign was one he posted in Jan 2011 and was said to have one of many he would post around his property.

photographer for the Eganville Leader took this picture Jan. 21, 2011 when a home owned by Basil Borutski and his wife Mary Ann Borutski burned to the ground under suspicious circumstances. It shows a list of Borutski’s perceived enemies and, beneath it, a real estate poster for Anastasia Kuzyk, one of the women Borutski is accused of killing on Tuesday. THE EGANVILLE LEADER

Therefore, the "hit-list" part of this story is likely true. JMO

Basil Borutski was a man who liked to enumerate his enemies.

Neighbours said Borutski once posted a handwritten sign on his property on Round Lake Road that listed the names of those forbidden to set foot on his property. The house burned down under mysterious circumstances in 2011 during Borutski’s acrimonious divorce from his wife, Mary Ann.

Neighbour John Dixon once counted 27 signs posted on the Borutski property that warned people off his land. At least one contained a threat to shoot intruders. Another named individuals who were to stay away.

“One sign did have a long list of people, but he had 27 of them (signs) stuck into snowbanks all around his entranceway. I went out and counted them. I couldn’t believe it,” said Dixon, who lives directly across Round Lake Road from Borutski’s former home.

“They were all negative, things like ‘Keep Out,’ and ‘Stay Out,’ (and) ‘My Dog Has A .45-Calibre Bite,’ ” he said.

“There was a list of names of people that were not allowed on the property. I believe one was his wife, and somebody else told me there were three OPP there.”

Jeff Stewart, manager of the Round Lake Centre Food Market, said the sign with its list of names went up on the Borutski property four or five years ago. A big white corrugated plastic sign was nailed to a hydro pole by the road, and names were handwritten on it.

He and his wife checked it once in case their names were on the list. “We went down and took a peep. Our names weren’t on it so we were OK. There were at least, oh, close to 20 names on that sign.”

Though he doesn’t remember the wording of the sign, “it was definitely threats … It was definitely a threat directed at the people on the sign.”

Hope the other names on that list are all accounted for.........holy smokes.

I didn't realize there was a page on here for Basil Borutski.

That day when he went on his murder spree, was an intense day. There were lock downs all over the place even up into Pembroke and Petawawa.
Although I do not know him personally I have heard others I know, say he was a nasty SOB. These women did NOT need to lose their lives, this was completely preventable :(

There was a story on Fifth Estate about this.

The murder trial of Basil Borutski, the Ottawa Valley man accused of slaying three women, has been transferred to the Ottawa courthouse from Pembroke...

The highly anticipated trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 18, 2017 — two years after a gunman shot dead three women in a one-day rampage across the Ottawa Valley. The Crown is expected to call as many as 125 witnesses in its attempt to establish that Borutski, a former millwright, was responsible for the carnage.

The trial is expected to last at least four months.

In each of the three known murders, was there an apparent motive? money? sexual release of some kind. You are right to question whether or not he has committed more murders.

I heard he is representing himself. Good luck.
