''A coroner’s inquest into the deaths of three women killed by a man in 2015 has begun and is expected to explore the dynamics of gender-based, intimate partner violence and femicide in rural communities.
Nathalie Warmerdam, 48, Carol Culleton, 66, and Anastasia Kuzyk, 36, were killed on their properties in the Renfrew County area by Basil Borutski, a man who had a known history of violence against women.
All three murders took place on Sept. 22, 2015, in the space of less than an hour.''
''The inquest is exploring the circumstances of their deaths and is also considering several public policy issues directed at preventing future deaths and protecting victims of intimate partner violence in rural communities.''
''The inquest is expected to last three weeks and hear from approximately 30 witnesses.''

''Borutski had a history of assaulting women and defying the justice system. On Sept. 22 , 2015, he strangled Carol Culleton, 66, who was at her cottage near Combermere. He took her car and drove to Wilno, where he shot and killed Anastasia Kuzyk, 36, then drove to Foymount Road, where he shot and killed Nathalie Warmerdam, 48.
All the women knew Borutski. He had prior domestic violence convictions against both Kuzyk and Warmerdam.
The inquest is focused on preventing violence and deaths in a rural context. On the first day, Nathalie Warmerdam’s daughter, Valerie, told the inquest that being convicted and jailed did not stop Borutski from coming back or finding other people to hurt.
“You have to build a system that isn’t just for catching monsters. Because most folks wouldn’t see them as monsters until after these types of events have occurred,” said Valerie. “And that doesn’t do anyone any good.”
