More Charges Against Alleged Serial Killer

By Ron Fanfair, Toronto Police ServicePublished: 11:33 a.m. January 29, 2018

Bruce McArthur has been charged with another three counts of First-Degree Murder, after police recovered the dismembered remains of at least three people from the backyard of a Leaside residence.

The remains have not been identified.

The body parts were allegedly found in large planters at the rear of the property on Mallory Crescent.

The 66-year-old self-employed landscaper was arrested and charged on January 18 with the deaths of Selim Essen and Andrew Kinsman earlier in the year.

Esen, 44, of no fixed address, was reported missing by a friend on April 20, 2017. He consistently frequented the Church & Wellesley St. area and Kensington Market and often had a small plastic suitcase on wheels similar to a carry-on bag.

He was last definitively seen on March 20, 2017, even though there have been reports that he was also observed by a member of the community as late as April 14.

Kinsman, 49, was reported missing by a neighbour on June 28, 2017. Kinsman, known to be active on social media, was last seen in the area of his residence on Winchester St. on June 26.

At a news conference at police headquarters on January 29, Detective Sergeant Hank Idsinga said police believe MacArthur is responsible for the deaths of 58-year-old Majeed Kayhan, reported missing since October 2012, 50-year-old Soroush Marmudi, reported missing in August 2015, and 47-year-old Dean Lisowick, who was not reported missing.

He said Kayhan was one of the men whose disappearance was investigated by Project Houston, which ran from November 2012 to April 2014. That project identified three missing persons – Kayhan, Skanda Navaratnam and Abdulbasir Faizi – from the Gay Village.

Marmudi was reported missing in Scarborough by his family, while Lisowick was never reported missing.

“We believe that he was murdered between May 2016 and July 2017,” said Idsinga.

He said investigators continue to search McArthur’s residence at 95 Thorncliffe Park, and a residence at 53 Mallory, which McArthur used for storage for his landscaping work.

Assistance from outside agencies, including the Ontario Provincial Police, the province’s forensic pathology services and the Centre of Forensic Sciences is being utilized to search these premises,” Idsinga said.
He’s encouraging anyone who employed McArthur as a landscaper at their residence, and has not talked to police, to contact investigators at 416-808-2021.

“I would ask that you contact us as soon as possible so that we can make arrangements to search your yards and gardens,” he said. “I thank all of these homeowners for their ongoing co-operation and wish to assure them that we will respect their privacy.

Investigators have identified about 30 properties within Toronto where McArthur worked.

“We believe there are more remains at some of these properties that we are working to recover,” Idsinga added. “…We have seized quite a few planters from around the city and we will continue to do that. There are at least two sites that we do want to excavate where people might be buried.”

People wishing to provide information can do so by calling 416-808-2021. They can also call anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS or 222tips.com.

Accused serial killer Bruce McArthur charged with 3 new counts of 1st-degree murder

'We do believe there are more,' officer says after murder counts against Toronto landscaper rise to 5

'We've never seen anything quite like this with the number of crime scenes that we have to process.'
- Det.-Sgt Hank Idsinga, Toronto police
He added that more DNA and other analysis is being done on the remains to determine the exact identities of the victims.
Since McArthur's arrest, police have identified approximately 30 properties where the self-employed landscaper may have worked.

Idsinga said police have searched the majority of the properties, and urged anyone who may have employed McArthur to contact them so they can search the area where he may have worked.

"He's taken some steps to cover his tracks and we have to uncover these victims," Idsinga added.
The ensuing investigation has required an "unprecedented" number of resources, police said.

"We've never seen anything quite like this with the number of crime scenes that we have to process," said Idsinga.

Has he been known to be around the London Ont area? There was a rash of animal mutilations and psychology says thats a pre-curser

A couple of things from the TPS release that I did not know:

-Esen, 44, of no fixed address, was reported missing by a friend on April 20, 2017. He consistently frequented the Church & Wellesley St. area and Kensington Market and often had a small plastic suitcase on wheels similar to a carry-on bag.

I have found reference for one of his BF's to go to the London area quite frequently for some get together's, and I might add, that there have been animal mutilations that have occurred in the Frankford/Belleville area, and BM has been connected to Madoc and Belleville, and known to frequent the Zwick's Park area of Belleville waterfront, a known trail and park for gay hook up's.

no expert but BM seems to have progressed beyond the mutilating animals stage... unless this often co-occurs with actual murders of people

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Not yet known if parts of the Remains found are theirs or not
4. Evidence since his arrest, yes, I think

Re:#2 I don't believe it is known yet (or it was not specified) whether the skeletal remains found are all male.

I wonder how they've identified Dean Lisowick, who's never been reported missing?

I think they must have found his name at BM's home (possibly ID?), plus evidence that he'd been killed. It must have taken this time to confirm he's missing. But they must have found something else to be able to lay charges. Very unlikely they have or could retrieve his DNA if he was a street person.

Serial killers do sometimes keep documentation. I notice in the helpful presser transcript, one of the reporters asked about this, but naturally the question was sidestepped.

Still uncovering the relationship between BM and victims.

Q: was BM cataloging victims?

A: At LEAST the remains of 3 people among those body parts.

If you're thinking of the MacDonald triad (animal cruelty; fire-setting; bed-wetting), these are typically signs during childhood / adolescence.

This is probably going to end up being one of the most prolific serial murder cases in recent North American history. We need to move this to the Serial Killers subforum.

Based upon how rapidly this case is updating I bet McArthur is talking...

If he's talking, he's bragging - but I don't think so. I think he kept identifiable trophies from the victims he's charged with killing so far.

When someone doesn't have a person in their life that knows them deeply enough or cares enough to report them missing, it breaks my heart.

I agree, very sad.
I wonder if he was ever a subcontractor for another landscaper?

Still haven't watched the presser, just remembering back to the comments: I like that a reporter asked if BM was cataloguing, and that it wasn't exactly confirmed or denied. In my humble opinion, I think BM kept a photo album of sorts. That, with other evidence recovered, lead to these 3 additional charges today.
