The untold story of the first suspect, before Bruce McArthur, in the Toronto serial killings
"It was on one of those forums, Zambian Meat, that a Canadian man claimed to have killed and eaten a man in Toronto in 2012. The horrifying scenario triggered a massive police task force."
"Toronto Police eventually concluded Brunton’s claims were just fantasy and he had nothing to do with the disappearances or murders of the missing men. He was what’s called a "howler."

It’s a term explained by forensic psychiatrist Dr Cynthia Baxter.

Based in Calgary, Alta., she uses an analogy to differentiate between "Howlers" and ‘"Hunters":

"If you’ve got a cat that wants to catch a bird, what does the cat do? The cat goes into hunter mode, crouches down, is silent, and quiet as it stalks its prey," said Baxter."

“The goal is not to actually get the prey, a howler is someone who wants to convince everybody that they’re a hunter,” said Baxter.

“Serial killers are almost always hunters, that’s how they get away with it for so long.”

Bruce MacArthur is accused of being a hunter."

This was pretty interesting (as was, to my surprise, the first part on car theft as big business.) I find it fascinating that TPS took the phone call from the man in Switzerland reporting possible cannibalism so seriously. If he hadn't been correct about an earlier case, where the person was a true "hunter", I wonder if they would have bothered.

Not that the investigation actually helped with the BM case, but at least they got Brunton for the child *advertiser censored* stuff.

Case of Bruce McArthur, facing 8 murder counts, back in Toronto court today
September 26, 2018
"TORONTO -- The case of a man facing eight first-degree murder charges following an investigation into the disappearances of men with ties to Toronto's gay village returns to court today".
"Acting Insp. Hank Idsinga said at the time that the current evidence in the case suggested there weren't any more alleged victims.

Idsinga said investigators were still sifting through tips from Canada and abroad, and analyzing cold cases and missing persons' reports."

Karen Fraser never imagined that doing a good deed for a friend's brother would land her at the centre of one of the biggest crime stories in Canadian history.

In exchange for use of the space, he would tend their yard. He donated flowers to their charity events. He brought planters full of flowers and told Fraser he wanted to keep them in her backyard so he could look at them while he and his crew ate lunch there.

That is a bit strange. Is it that they don't want the 'defense' legal team to say that the jury is biased because of too much media exposure? That's the only thing I can think of.

Is it possible that McA doesn't look much like his online photo and that police want witnesses to be able to identify him accurately.

New Bruce McArthur documents reveal how police struggled to solve mystery of Toronto’s murdered gay men
"TORONTO — A dead body in a steam bath on New Year’s Day, a man claiming to be a cannibal, officers sneaking into a house and cloning computer hard drives and a GPS tracker secretly hidden by detectives on a suspect’s vehicle are among the tantalizing — but ultimately fruitless — early leads Toronto police chased in the years before Bruce McArthur was charged with killing eight men linked to the city’s gay village."
"The new documents show that although the first probe failed to solve the mystery of what happened, detectives conducted a wide investigation of the three cases, spanning 18 months from 2012 to 2013."

"Police also sent requests to 14 other police departments in Ontario, asking them to search their records for unsolved missing person reports for males between the ages of 21 to 24. That range is odd given the ages of the three missing men were about twice that. Halton police, west of Toronto, responded with a case from 2006 with “similar circumstances,” but the outcome is not revealed in the records."

Neighbours join Leaside couple for renewal ceremony at home where alleged Bruce McArthur victims found | The Star
"Friends, neighbours, family and politicians gathered beneath the canopy of mature trees for a ceremony to help the couple bless, cleanse and renew the land where police found the remains of eight men linked to an investigation into landscaper Bruce McArthur. "
"Looking back, Smith is philosophical. He was in a tornado when he was 14, he said, and since then, he has always appreciated the next breath. “You always wish the best for things but all of a sudden you find yourself in a situation where reality becomes very clear, and then you deal with it moment by moment and by not forgetting the kindness of those around you.”

Toronto police suspected ‘the worst’ months before they arrested alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur | Woodstock Sentinel Review
A police task force investigating suspicious disappearances of several men in Toronto’s gay village believed there was reason to expect “the worst” as early as August 2017, months before Chief Mark Saunders assured the public there was no evidence the disappearances were the work of a serial killer.

In fact, just three days before Saunders’ dismissal of the spreading fear, his officers had secretly broken into the apartment of Bruce McArthur, their prime suspect in a series of presumed murders, to search for evidence.

Covert police search of Bruce McArthur’s home cut short when he unexpectedly returned home: court records

October 4, 2018

"Andrew Kinsman’s mysterious disappearance in the summer of 2017 served as a tipping point that finally led Toronto police to focus investigative efforts on alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur.

The probe into McArthur included extensive surveillance, a covert search of his apartment that was interrupted when he unexpectedly came home, a discovery of Kinsman’s blood and disturbing revelations that soon linked the landscaper to the deaths of seven other men, according to court documents unsealed by an Ontario Court of Justice judge on Wednesday.

The documents pertain to Project Prism, a police task force struck to probe the disappearances of Kinsman, 49, and Selim Esen, 44, in 2017. They were unsealed following an application from CBC News and a number of other media outlets...."

IF his apartment contained his 'killing room', how did he manage to keep it from his son (room mate)??

From what I gleaned from MSM reports, his apartment was quite nice with antique furniture etc.

Gives me the shivers just to think about it. Those poor men.

"EXCLUSIVE: Strangers take in Mallory Cr. homeowners during McArthur investigation"

"Their lives were uprooted, suddenly and with little explanation.

It was 10:30 a.m. on January 18, 2018 when Karen Fraser heard a knock on the door of her Leaside home on Mallory Cres. She was greeted by two men, who were not, in Fraser’s opinion in proper “police uniforms.”

“I said it’s cold come in. They said you have to leave your house now. There’s been a serious crime, Bruce McArthur’s been arrested get out,” she says

McArthur, a gardener, had used the couples garage for 10 years to store his equipment. In return he would maintain their lawn and garden, even adding multiple flower arrangements in their backyard.

Karen recalls that the officers didn’t have a search warrant, nor did they initially show her any ID. Her mind was “reeling.”

Karen’s partner, Ron Smith was hearing bits and pieces of the conversation from upstairs and came down to see who these two men were.

“We didn’t know what this was all about, we were just being told to leave and there was no timeline attached to it,” he says."

This is certainly heart-warming!

From the article: "On one occasion, David received a phone call from his sister in Ohio, who asked “how do you know they’re not involved in this?” He replied “I don’t.”

In a large city, that at times can lack compassion and humanity, the resounding message from these four new friends is “be open to people.”

Smith is adamant in his belief that it’s “never been more important to have good relationships with people and to build strong bonds and to find that others are willing to go out of their way to help you. Make yourself available for people who need your help.”
