anybody else find this survivors comments a bit strange?

if you watch this video and listen to his comment @0:06 "semi-truck pulled up in front of us"

i just think the wording there is very strange, maybe this wasn't an "accident" at all

There is some info circulating out there in a few stories on the web that the truck was in fact turning left (south) at the intersection instead of heading straight through (which would have been west). I think someone posted this before. I'm not sure if the final destination of the truck was due west of the crash site, or whether a south turn at the intersection makes sense in terms of the truck's final destination using a more southerly route. In that case for sure the truck would have had to stop or certainly slow down before it passed through the intersection. But the truck had a stop sign, no doubt about it. Maybe this is what he means by "pulled up" in front of us?

Brenden Prokopchuk wrote Dayna Brons a love letter for their five-year anniversary, not knowing she would die a few weeks later.

He told her that he was lucky to have her as his best friend and he looked forward to their next 50 years together. Prokopchuk read the letter aloud at her funeral Wednesday in Humboldt.

He broke into sobs as he walked off a stage in the arena and was enveloped in hugs from family and friends.

‘Such a great kid’

Conner Lukan, a 21-year-old player who also died in the crash, was remembered at his funeral Wednesday as someone who tore around on quads, roughhoused with his friends and, of course, played hockey. He also knew the ins and outs of the romance reality show “The Bachelor.”

He loved animals, except for squirrels. His friends called him a guy who could make your troubles disappear with a chat and a cup of coffee. His coaches said he was a quiet leader who knew when to demand more from his teammates and when to lead by example.

The online fundraiser for the 16 victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash was up for only 12 days, but raised over $15 million dollars.

“First and foremost, the Broncos’ volunteer board of directors would like to express their tremendous love and sincere gratitude to everyone who has generously donated time and money to support our organization and its families, as we navigate through this dark and heart-wrenching time,” the page reads.

Over 140,000 people from over 80 countries donated to the cause before it was closed April 18 at midnight MT. It surpassed the record for any Canadian ever, and is within the top three worldwide.

The funds will go to the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Fund Inc. and an advisory committee will be set up to distribute the money.

“Our goal has been right from day one to support the needs of our families and that is ultimately what we are going to do,” Broncos president Kevin Garinger said earlier this week. He said it was too soon to give a more specific breakdown of where the money will go.

First responders who helped the victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in Saskatchewan say they have been receiving lots of support since they arrived at that horrific scene on April 6 — but a long-term approach will be needed to prevent and address symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, experts say.

"The funny thing about PTSD… is that you never know when it's really going to strike," said Dr. Manuela Joannou, an emergency department physician in Perth, Ont., and founder of Project Trauma Support — a group treatment program for first responders and military veterans.

"People can be doing very well after a difficult call for weeks, months — years even — and then something might happen that will kind of bring it all back and will start people ruminating about what happened."

I read this last night! How awesome is that! Not sure why they decided to close it, but the since they announced it a few days ago, they raised a few million before it closed :)

It is awesome I hope it allows the injured like Ryan to lead as full a life as possible and helps everyone affected.

There needs to be a thorough investigation but the early reports were that the truck never stopped at the sign. I sympathise with the truck driver as I would not like to be him knowing 15 young men had died and more injured in an accident I was involved in. I wouldn’t be surprised if charges are filed at some point after an investigation has concluded

everybody should just relax and let the investigators do their job,

a lot of people already have the truck driver tarred and feathered before all the facts come out,

it could be something as simple as the trucks brakes failing, maybe the driver was TRYING to stop and could not,

nobody should be blaming anybody at this point,

put yourself in this mans position, he probably already feels like crap, and then he hears crap being talked about him which may not be justified

This is what is happening the investigators are doing their job and we need to wait for the report. Of course the truck driver should not be punished if this was a genuine accident. I sympathise with the guy I really do.

This will sound silly, but I feel even more sad now that the has closed and the funerals taking place. The reality is setting in and the pain the loved ones feel must be so intense. :( Rest in sweet peace boys and girls. Xo

Police say westbound tractor trailer involved in Humboldt Broncos bus crash was in intersection at time of crash. Say investigation is trying to determine why; weather was clear and northbound bus had right-of-way.

I just got home from work and saw the tweets from the RCMP about a news conference.

Complex collision reconstruction investigations take time and are often measured in weeks and months rather than days. But be assured, we are committed to providing updates as the investigation progresses.

Police say it’s too early to say what happened in a fatal bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team and whether charges will be laid.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Curtis Zablocki says what is certain is that a tractor-trailer was in the intersection when the truck and the team bus collided on April 6.

“All of our efforts are dedicated to determining why the tractor-trailer unit was in the intersection,” Zablocki said Thursday.

“We know the road conditions were clear and the sun was shining at the time of the collision.”

Sixteen people — including 10 players — were killed and another 13 people were injured. The driver of the semi-trailer was not hurt. He was taken into custody immediately after the collision and released later that evening.

“The tractor-trailer unit driver remains in regular contact with our officers,” said Zablocki. He said the driver’s level of experience, the size of his load and where he was headed will be part of the investigation.

Many Thanks for the update Matou and Missy1974.

Nearly two weeks after Ryan Straschnitzki and the rest of his Humboldt Broncos hockey team were involved in a devastating, deadly crash on a rural Saskatchewan highway, the Airdrie native will be continuing his recovery at home in Alberta.

Ryan was one of 13 people injured when a bus carrying the hockey team, trainers and coaches collided with a semi-truck at a highway intersection near Tisdale on April 6. The 18-year-old suffered a broken back and is paralyzed from the chest down.

Continued

Ryan, who turns 19 on Friday, flew home with his mother Thursday morning on a MedEvac plane.

“The care we got here in Saskatchewan was phenomenal. Everyone was great. So, I think he’ll miss that part but he is closer to home and now all his buddies can come see him,” Tom said.

https://globalnews.ca/news/4155570/humboldt-broncos-ryan-straschnitzki-calgary-hospital-recovery/

I wish Ryan a Happy 19th Birthday for Friday and hope he knows people around the world care and are still praying for him and his colleagues who are also injured.

Ordered off the road

The truck belonged to Calgary-based Adesh Deol Trucking Ltd.

Sukhmander Singh, who owns the company, told CBC News he had given the driver two weeks of training. He said the man had been driving on his own for the company for two weeks before the crash happened.

Singh said the driver is doing better.

He's feeling good now and going to the doctor," said Singh, adding the driver is still in counselling.

Singh said he's effectively out of business because Alberta Transportation ordered the company to keep its only other truck off the road, pending the investigation. The move is standard when a company has been involved in a serious accident, the province has said.

"I'm just waiting for the investigation," said Singh.

Intersection closed

Zablocki said the driver's logs have been seized by police, though it's unclear whether the logs are on paper or digital.

He said investigators will also look at the condition of both drivers, how much rest they'd had, when brakes were checked and other safety compliance measures. Both vehicles have been inspected.

In addition, the engine computers for both vehicles have been transported by RCMP to California to be analyzed.
