Well if vaccination mandates are really what’s behind these protests, it seems to me that requirement is going to have to be dropped soon as well.

The dominos begin to fall: Most Canadian pandemic strictures should be gone by spring
Most provinces are actively questioning the utility of vaccine passports and other pandemic measures

“In dropping vaccine mandates, health authorities have been citing the fact that the measures no longer make sense in the face of the wildly infectious Omicron variant, which has proven to circulate among fully vaccinated people almost as well as among the unvaccinated (although the vaccines have been shown to protect against severe outcomes).

“When we see a vaccine that doesn’t provide the sterile immunity like it did provide against Delta, we have to reassess whether we maintain a proof of vaccination certification process, given the decreased benefit against transmission,” Ontario’s top doctor said last week.

ETA - Oh oh, maybe not. This might be where egos come into play.
FIRST READING: Everybody (except Trudeau) is abandoning COVID restrictions | National Post
“A notable holdout is the feds. Not only is the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resolutely staying the course on all COVID-19 restrictions, but they are laying plans for even more COVID-19 restrictions. A week ago, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said his department was working on a new mandate that would ban unvaccinated truckers from interprovincial travel in addition to the current ban on cross-border travel.”

@Satchie wrote: As you point out, it is the cabinet that has the real power. They approved the trucker mandate by a vote, and it got passed directly into law, rather than going forward as legislation.

The Prime Minister doesn't have a legal position like the US president. The Liberals could, in theory, replace him, the way the Conservative leader was just replaced. He's one vote at cabinet. But, of course, if cabinet loses confidence in him, and start to disagree, the whole thing falls apart, as Erin O'Toole just discovered.

Also, border issues are handled by multiple federal agencies, as was the case in the US before 9/11. There's no department like Homeland Security here. So the details were worked out by agreement of 4 federal ministers: Health, Public Safety, Transport and Immigration (see the press release I linked above) . They would have presented the proposal to cabinet for approval.

[edited to add] Regarding the role of Tam, she only has power to offer advice. But I think Trudeau set the tone in the first days of pandemic restrictions, when he stated that all federal actions would be based on the best science available. That has to come from Tam, since none of the politicians are experts in infectious diseases.

Yes, it rather makes me feel a bit of national pride. There are lots of checks and balances in the system to ensure a democratic process. I'm thankful that our best medical and public health practices are not driven by a group of rogue truckers, but that we have an excellent ministry in place to direct our elected leaders.

This interprovincial vaccine mandate has been in the works for ages. It's kind of like, truckers are the last group of people to come under it. Everyone else has accepted and adapted to it.

August announcement of vaccine mandate for all federal employees and federally regulated industries:

September: provincial truckers associations deliver software to implement an inter-provincial trucker mandate.

January 2022, no date for implementation but everyone is ready:
No date yet for mandatory vaccination of interprovincial truckers

ETA: of course, no one checks the provincial borders for a vaccine mandate. But you need one if you're going to use a washroom/restaurant/hotel, currently.

It seems as if many mandates are being dropped because the COVID numbers are falling, at least the serious illness and death ones in Canada (and Britain).

Just watch the truckers take credit for something that happens due to people being vaccinated and using public health measures.

As for the cross border mandates, that’s between Biden and Trudeau et al.

Heart problems associated with covid well after recovery from virus.

"Using a national cohort of people with COVID-19, we show that risk and 12-month burden of incident cardiovascular disease are substantial and span several cardiovascular disease categories (ischemic and non-ischemic heart disease, dysrhythmias and others). The risks and burdens of cardiovascular disease were evident even among those whose acute COVID-19 did not necessitate hospitalization."

Viral infections of all sorts are known to cause cardiac illnesses.

Even the flu can leave one with myocarditis, occasionally fatal.

I’m glad they’re following this but it should not be surprising to the medical community.

I guess the freedom protests aren't about getting the economy going.

Not at all! These protesters, with ever shifting demands, are determined to interfere with Canada's economy and quality of life. They claim they want pandemic restrictions removed, but we can see that although the Alberta govt has essentially removed all restrictions (rolling out between now and the end of the month), that's not good enough. They got what they wanted, then they demand more.

I suspect the real goal is to overthrow the government, since Trudeau has been a target since the beginning. Tamara Lich, the person behind the protest, failed in her Maverick Party goal of separating western provinces from Canada. Now the strategy seems to be to undermine the federal government. Just an opinion, but when protester demands are met, and they demand more, we know there's more to this than meets the eye.

I think it’s a shame political parties can’t take a unified stance over managing COVID. We see that same sort of conflict within some provinces as well.

The disruption to Canadians should be enough for all political parties to take action to put an end to it. Instead, it appears that some are using pandemic mandates as a political football. They can't seem to sort out their priorities.

1600 nurses live in Windsor and work in Detroit. They are unable to work right now because they can't cross the border. The border blockades are an economic problem on both sides of the border.

"Michigan governor calls on Canada to immediately re-open Ambassador Bridge. Democrat Gretchen Whitmer says closure 'unacceptable' for Michigan families, businesses. Says 'imperative that Canadian local, provincial and national governments de-escalate this economic blockade.'"

IMO, if the government gives in to protesters demands, then everyone who has a greivance will just start blocking bridges etc, to force the government to change their policies. The noisest and rudest people will run the country.

It's like Canada's long standing policy about international kidnappers, or terrorists, you just don't negotiate or pay them what they want. They will be discouraged and the tactics will be abandoned.

It's also the policy every good parent must adopt when dealing with their children. Or people who want a well-trained dog, rather than one who controls you.

IMO, it's no suprise the PCs and Singh jump at any chance to slag Trudeau, but I haven't heard any actual statements about what they themselves would do if they were Prime Minister.
