Did FSIN not hope for DW and her son to be found safe and sound? Isn’t that what everyone always hopes for in every missing persons case, even if an abduction occurred? If she and her son hadn’t been tracked down, it’s almost as if she was destined to become a high profile victim in order to further an agenda. It seems as the stage was being set IMO.

“…..Police have not issued an Amber Alert for Walker’s son and said it does not meet the criteria at this time. The FSIN has issued its own Amber Alert and said it believes Walker and her son are “significantly at risk.”

“We demand the co-operation from all law enforcement to support our Amber Alert in finding Dawn and seven-year-old Vinnie,” FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron said in the statement.

Bear said despite the police’s initial comments, they are not ruling out foul play, citing a history of Walker speaking about experiencing domestic violence.

“We know that Dawn has been a victim of domestic violence … I’m not going to make any allegations but we know exactly that. There’s been issues there in the past,” Bear said.

Eleanore Sunchild, a close friend of Walker’s, said she had previously reported violence stemming from a relationship to the police.

“She went to (authorities) regarding past domestic violence and there were files open, but nothing was done,” Sunchild said.

She described Walker as a “brilliant” author and community leader who is always on top of things and keeps in close touch with family and friends.

“It’s totally out of character,” Sunchild said. “She’s one of the most responsible people I know. She would not disappear.”

She added that Walker, who she said has two pets, would never leave them unattended, and that she is deeply committed to her son’s wellbeing….”

A rally for what? Ridiculous!

Well, if something unreported has been going on the police are not going to know about it. There are volatile home situations that go unreported and denied due to a fear factor. imo

It is just a suggestion, as we have all heard of cases where mothers feel they have no recourse but to flee with their child. Because the courts have no proof of allegations and keep child arrangements as they are.

I find this whole situation really puzzling. Everyone (especially her ... a lawyer) knows that the Hague Convention means there are no international borders where child custody is concerned.
I think we should be cautious about assuming that Dawn Walker is a lawyer. We know that she has a Law degree and an English degree. Getting a Law degree does not make someone a lawyer.

The situation is confusing. On the one hand there is a child abductor who is presented as a victim. There is a 7 year old boy who appears to have been at the centre of an acrimonious custody dispute for four years. That's more than half of his life. There is deception and a staged disappearance that was interpreted by some as meaning the "domestic violent" former partner harmed her. The domestic violence allegations seemed to disappear after the child was located. There are new allegations about child neglect.

To make it more complicated, Dawn is described by the Indigenous community as a typical "missing" person in the "missing and murdered Indigenous women" conversation. That's an eyeopener for me. To add pressure to the custody dispute, Dawn's employer wants to get involved. It seems to be a situation that is escalating rather than de-escalating, which is the worst thing the parents could do to the child.

That quote is what drives the seriousness of this staged disappearance home. Dawn Walker staged a scene to give the impression that something terrible had happened to her. Her friends immediately focused on the former partner - who is presumably the father of the child. The entire staged scene was intended to portray Dawn as a victim; as another another missing/murdered Indigenous woman. Are there not enough actual victims that Indigenous women are now staging the scene to exaggerate the facts?

That's a very serious hoax to perpetrate on a community, and especially on the child's father, his wife and their daughter. What kind of harm was Dawn hoping would come to him and his family through her hoax?

There are also questions for the FSIN. Dawn's quest for sole custody of her child is desperate, well planned and devious. Do they not at some point step back and recognize that they were 100% wrong about who they thought she was? They believed that she would never do something like this. They believed in her completely. Yet, she fooled them all. Wouldn't now be a good time to step back and listen to the voices of others?

If the FSIN is so suspicious of the father, why don't they send an unbiased professional from their community to visit the father at home with his wife and two children? Given the photos that were on the child's missing-website (removed for privacy reasons) I have no doubt that all communities would agree that it is a happy, nurturing, stable, secure family and home.

Rather than the FSIN publishing articles implying that they will not hesitate to intervene regarding child neglect of a member of the Metis community, the FSIN should reserve judgement and find independent facts. Gossip about domestic violence & child neglect related to a hoax is not a good reason for an organization like the FSIN to take a public stance.

This quote seriously muddies the claim about missing Indigenous women. The FSIN claims that it is clearly the case with Dawn that she had a reason to go missing, like so many other Indigenous women. That would suggest that missing Indigenous women (separate category from murdered women) are voluntarily missing. That is not what I understood until now. I assumed that missing Indigenous women were women who were murdered but who had not been found. This is a completely different meaning. This strikes me as a serious setback for the missing and murdered Indigenous women's cause.

"At FSIN we know why First Nations women go missing and recognize that there are many complex issues that surround their disappearances. This is clearly the case with Dawn and her son Vinnie, and we will be closely following the legal process with more details on this case eventually being made public," said FSIN vice-chief Heather Bear."

No reports indicate that was the case….”historical“ would appear to me to indicate a history of numerous reports alleging DW was the victim.

FSIN Vice Chief Heather Bear has said Walker previously experienced domestic violence. Saskatoon police confirmed they have historical reports of domestic violence allegations involving her.

Consideration is being given to previous contact that Saskatoon police has had with Dawn,” Obst said, though he declined to specify or offer any updates….”

From your link ...

Saskatoon police said: "consideration is being given to previous contact that Saskatoon police has had with Dawn". That sounds like the Oregon police have requested the files and will give consideration to that information in deciding whether to file charges for illegally transporting the child across the border.

Yeah… I hope we get more clear answers tomorrow about what really happened at the press conference.

Hope so. Saskatchewan Children's Law Act is very clear. If two people are living together when their child is born, they are automatically joint legal guardians. Parents can then choose to fight it or find a schedule that works. Extended family and friends can request scheduled time with the child. It seems like a fair solution that encourages a healthy environment for the child. The child cannot be relocated to another city, and extended family, friends and the other parent cannot be deprived of the child ... such as a disappearing act hoax.

"In Saskatchewan, under The Children’s Law Act, 1997 parents who were married, or lived together when the child was born are joint legal custodians of the child with equal rights, powers and duties. The status of joint legal custodians can be altered by court order or by the parents’ agreement. Parents can agree that only one of them will have custody, or that someone else will have custody of their child. They can specify rights and duties of each parent, and set up access by the child to one of the parents or any other person.
...

Under The Children’s Law Act, 1997, people other than parents who have a close relationship to the child, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, or close friends of the family, who want to maintain contact with the child, can also apply for an access order. The court must still consider what is in the best interests of the child in deciding whether to make the access order."

If a Canadian man staged a scene of drowning or abduction, and then illegally whisked himself and his 7 year old daughter to a foreign country, hid and said nothing for two weeks, would there be vigils for him after he was found?

Ontario financier, Albert Walker, successfully did this with his 15 year old daughter. There were no vigils, not even after the child (then a mother of 2) was found.

I'm not convinced that Dawn the Victim is the right perspective. The 7 year old child is the victim. Dawn did something to the child that unsettled his stability, schedule and psychological tranquility. Imagine what he thought, or feared, as police approached him in foreign country to separate him from his mother. What was she thinking! Does this woman deserve a vigil and, if so, why?

From the link ... a comedian who creates a hoax of a drowning or abduction of a 7 year old child to protect herself from domestic violence, or was it child neglect? "Broken legal system" because an Indigenous actress comedian cannot get away with faking "missing indigenous woman" status?

Sounds like everything including the kitchen sink was thrown into the Dawn Walker, a.k.a. Dawn Dumont, story about custody, complaints, and the Saskatchewan Children's Law Act (1997).

"The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations has issued a release encouraging the public to join them in their rally, saying, “It is our position that a broken legal system, justice system, policing system, and social system, on top of broken treaties and genocidal policies of colonialism and destruction and privilege which have benefitted many at the cost of many others, are what is at play here.”
...

“In addition,” said the FSIN, “she is a well-known and talented comedian, actress, activist, advocate, and author ...”

So because she’s funny and talented, she gets a pass….*eye roll*

I hope we get more info soon and maybe that will change my opinion, but right now I’m just appalled at what she did and how she is being celebrated for it.

Darlene Okemaysim-Sicotte said that joy has been overshadowed by people using social media to vilify Walker.

"We really needed the public to try to understand that in these complex situations, when someone with that kind of a profile and abilities and that intelligence, that there is obviously something critically, critically wrong," she said, while attending the support rally in Saskatoon.

"We don't know. But it was something enough for for her to leave abruptly."

Okemaysim-Sicotte is the co-chair of Iskwewuk Ewichiwitochik (Women Walking Together), a grassroots group in Saskatoon supporting families of missing women and murdered Indigenous women.

She said people are angry about the resources used to search for Dawn, and the emotional toll felt by people who worried she and her son had been harmed. The circumstances are confusing, she said, but she urged people to be patient and wait for a fuller explanation.

Saskatoon police said Friday that their investigation was unfolding rapidly, and that more details would be provided Monday.

I am really disliking her now.

Glad to see the huge push to help First Nation children, hoping support will not be negatively affected by recent events, imo. speculation.

''SASKATOON -
The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) is optimistic following the federal government's unveiling of its $40-billion agreement in principle to compensate First Nations children and their families for the harm caused by an underfunded child welfare system''

''Saskatchewan has the second-highest number of children in care in Canada, says Pratt who estimates several thousand First Nations children in the province may be eligible for compensation.

The landmark agreement pledges another $20 billion to establish long-term reforms.''

''The healing journey begins by keeping First Nations children and young people within our own families and communities," said FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron.''

During a news conference on Monday, Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) said while the missing person investigation is winding down a criminal investigation is in its early stages.

SPS Deputy Chief Randy Huisman told reporters that Walker is scheduled to appear U.S. court on Monday.

Huisman said she faces two charges related to "false identity documents" she allegedly used.

He also said SPS is charging walker with abduction in contravention of a custody order and public mischief. Huisman said there may be further charges.

He said that Walker's son has been returned to a legal guardian in Canada.

The search for Walker largely focsued on the South Saskatchewan River, which runs through the park where her truck and belongings were found.

In addition to an extensive ground search, police and volunteers looked for signs of Walker and her son by air and sonar-equipped boat.

“The two were located in Oregon City, Ore., on Friday, but details remain scarce on how and why they ended up south of the border.

"All I can tell you is that we followed the evidence trail," Huisman said.

He said the investigation involved area searches, as well as looking into the people in her life, cellphone and bank records.

"All those things are taken into account," he said, "and when we start seeing anomalies, we start going in that direction."

Police determined that Walker crossed the border from Alberta into Montana, and that she was located at a rental unit in Oregon City. He said investigators are trying to determine who might have helped Walker travel.…”

It sounds like Walker had obtained false passports for herself and her son. That's quite something.

"Dawn Walker is facing charges of parental abduction and public mischief in Canada, along with U.S. charges related to using a false passport, the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) announced Monday.
...

"As the criminal investigation progresses there may be further charges," SPS deputy chief Randy Huisman said at a media briefing."
