Mom pleads guilty to killing her 12-year-old daughter
Fri, January 30, 2009

BRIDGEWATER, N.S. — The mother a girl whose body was found almost a year ago on a river bank in Bridgewater, N.S., pleaded guilty today to second-degree murder in her daughter’s death.
Penny Boudreau, 34, was charged with first-degree murder in the killing of her only child, Karissa, who was reported missing Jan. 27, 2008, as a snowstorm swept into the region.
Two days later, the tearful mother appeared before TV cameras, begging Karissa to come home and appealing to the public for help in finding the girl as search crews scoured a nearby river and wooded area.
Penny Boudreau pleaded guilty today in court.
The 12-year-old’s frozen remains were found by a passerby Feb. 9 on the bank of the LeHave River, on the outskirts of Bridgewater.

Boudreau was arrested in Halifax and charged last June.

"Mommy don't" Karissa's last words

20 year sentence handed out in daughter's murder

http://www.novanewsnow.com/article-298308-Mommy-dont-Karissas-last-words.html

This happened about an hour from where I live, and it's heart-wrenching to think that this cold blooded killer who called herself Karissa's mother, could look into the eyes of her child and hear her say "Mommy. Don't" as she tightened the twine around her neck and brutally murdered her.... all because she didn't want to lose her boyfriend who thought Karissa was "causing problems" in their relationship.

"The thought of losing him was worse than the thought of losing her," Boudreau told an undercover agent.

This precious child had a biological father who loved her, but Penny was so concerned about Karissa telling anyone that she was a bad mother, that she preferred to snuff her out.

Then she puts the child's body in the front passenger seat of her car, goes through a coffee drive-thru and disposes of the twine, proceeds to an isolated area on the river bank, pulls down her pants and panties to make it look like a sex-offense and dumps her body.

Where do these people come from?

At least she was stupid enough to confess to an undercover cop who made Penny believe that he could get her a job as a police informant, but she had to come clean with everything so that they knew they could "trust" her...

Mom once ‘kind and thoughtful’
Details of Karissa’s death shock grandmother

Ms. Boudreau pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 20 years from the date of her 2008 arrest.

Ms. Grear said she too is in her own prison. She was put on medication for her nerves after she heard the details in court and now she sits numb and confused, with only cloudy memories of the happy family she once had.

The details of this case are so heartbreaking. Rest in peace, Karissa.

Boyfriend not involved

Authorities convinced he played no role in killing or cover-up

Vernon Macumber may have had his suspicions about the disappearance of his girlfriend's daughter, but authorities don't believe he played a role in her murder. Questioned about Mr. Macumber's involvement following Friday's court proceeding, the Crown attorneys who prosecuted the case confirmed again that he will not be charged in connection with the death.
Mr. Macumber may have given Penny Boudreau an ultimatum to choose between him and 12-year-old Karissa, but police don't believe he was suggesting murder.
"We were satisfied that … he wasn't communicating that she was to kill Karissa, but rather that some other alternative to the circumstances they were living with as a family had to be made in order for he and Ms Boudreau to continue their relationship," Paul Scovil said.
"The choice was clearly Penny's," Denise Smith added.
Mr. Macumber told police officers working an undercover sting that he was at home asleep when Ms Boudreau killed her daughter. He was the first person she lied to when she began reporting that Karissa had run away.
"We suspected very strongly that he must have had an idea, but there is no evidence to suggest that he either had concrete evidence or assisted in any way in hiding evidence or being involved in any way in the murder," Mr. Scovil said.

A few things from some old articles....

Family, friends, classmates and community members streamed into the service held in H M Huskilson's Funeral Home. Children brought teddy bears in remembrance of the 12-year-old girl who loved stuffed toys.

Ingersoll told the congregation that Karissa had a warm personality, a "winning smile" and a love for animals. She had talked about studying to become a veterinarian.

Several South Shore schools will be closed
to give staff and students a chance to attend Karissa's funeral service.

Principal Steven Pippy remembered her Monday as part of a group of Grade 5 and 6 students who volunteered to keep the peace among younger children on the school playground.

At Hillcrest Academy in Shelburne where she had attended school, a wall of honour lined the hallway.

At the site where her body was found, a memorial in the form of hundreds of teddy bears quickly sprung up as people mourned the loss of a young life that had ended too soon.

As for the teddy bears that were left in Karissa's memory at what became a memorial site for the little girl, they were cleaned and bagged with a tag attached to each one that read, "For you, in loving memory of Karissa Paige Boudreau 1995-2008." Accompanied with each bear was a letter that included a short story about Karissa.

The teddy bears were donated to charitable organizations for children in traumatic situations
.

Other examples of where the bears were sent included 56 schools from Yarmouth to Chester, veterinary hospitals and animal shelters, the Canadian Red Cross, police departments across the province, fire departments in Canada, shelters, and orphanages in the Dominican Republic.

Approximately 730 bears were distributed in Karissa's memory.

Queens SPCA to benefit this year from event named for slain girl

Karissa wanted to be a veterinarian, so a different animal agency benefits from the food drive each year.

Grear said some people criticize the event, saying things such as "Can’t you guys just let it rest? They’ll say that right to us."

But she said Karissa’s family supports the event.

"This is how we want to remember her. We all know the details. We don’t want to go back there."

It's beautiful that an event is done annually in her name. And to donate the income from that event to a charity she believed in is phenomenal.

Shame on those residents who cannot see the healing that this is doing for her family and friends.

I could never let it go and I'm very glad no one is...

Rest in Peace pretty girl !!
