I think they do it this way because many of the cases end with plea deals. So they set the first date and then sometimes they negotiate a deal before that time. But I don't see that happening here.I wondered about that. In Canada, trial dates are set far in advance to allow time for crown disclosure of evidence and for defence to review that evidence. There are also delays in general because the courts are backed up.
If they agree in the initial hearing that it is going to trial, each side ends up giving an estimate of how much more time they will need to prepare and a revised trial date is given by the court.
