I think they do it this way because many of the cases end with plea deals. So they set the first date and then sometimes they negotiate a deal before that time. But I don't see that happening here.

If they agree in the initial hearing that it is going to trial, each side ends up giving an estimate of how much more time they will need to prepare and a revised trial date is given by the court.

In the US I think it also complies to the Right to a Speedy Trial in accordance to the 6th Amendment, which only the defence has the option of waving typically because they haven’t received complete disclosure yet.

In Canada the criminal trial must conclude within 18 months or charges may be dismissed and as a result the prosecution has become extraordinarily slow in laying charges to meet that timeline.
 
ITA NM has one of those faces. I feel like I've seen him before but he's so generic it'd be hard to say with 100% certainty.

Cannot recall was NM charged with internet luring? Wondering if this opens up the door for LE to dig around his computer/online presence? Not to mention LS as well, not as a guilty party but I'm willing to bet that NM was not the only one in her online "sphere" (perhaps NM had like minded followers who followed LS). IMHO this piece of garbage has done this before, probably quite a bit. I get incel/perv/P vibes from him and his creepy puppet show.

I also feel terrible for LS as she is so young and fell prey to scum. Hopefully she's getting the support she needs.

Oh my gosh - he went to Canada 3 times and was grooming another underage victim! He is such a dangerous predator.
 
It seems three of the assaults happened in Canada and three kidnappings was well.

What this girl has been through is horrendous.

I hope we charge him in Canada as well. Pile it all on.

What I read made me tear up. He altered her appearance and recorded what he did. Hopefully used as evidence against him proving she was confined, praying there is EXIF data on the camera like the location.

I could be wrong but the minimum mandatory sentence in the US is still a harsher penalty than what he'd get in Canada. I also believe the prison system in the US is much worse than in Canada. I can understand why Lilas' parents have consented/agreed to have Madrano tried in the US. He crossed the border so I'm sure all sides will be working against him.
