Samuel Bird, 14, was seen on the evening of June 1, 2025, leaving his residence to visit a friend in the Canora neighbourhood in west Edmonton. He was later reported to be seen leaving the friend’s residence on foot, but never returned home. He has not been seen by friends or family since.

The EPS Missing Persons Unit has actively investigated several reports of sightings of Samuel since his disappearance, but these have not been confirmed.

Samuel is described as a 14-year-old male who is 5’8” with a slim build. He has brown hair and brown eyes.

He is known to frequent West Edmonton Mall and is familiar with both west and south Edmonton.

The length of Samuel’s disappearance is out of character, and he has no phone or access to money. As such, police and family are concerned for his wellbeing.

Anyone with information about Samuel Bird’s whereabouts is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.

Samuel Bird, pictured here with his mother Alanna, has been missing since June 1. Alanna Bird and her family have been going on ground searches, looking for more information on what might have happened to the teen boy. (Submitted by Alanna Bird)

''Samuel's mother, Alanna Bird, and her family have been going on ground searches, looking for more information on what might have happened.
Her concern is that her boy has been hurt.
"We have our ups and downs. I'm just hoping we could find out what happened to him, or some closure, because that's the really hard part, is not knowing, just hoping for a miracle," Bird told CBC on Thursday.
"Maybe he's out there somewhere, but Sam wouldn't do this to us. And when I say he wouldn't, he wouldn't. He always kept in touch with me no matter what."
Bird is described as being five foot eight inches tall with a slim build. He has brown hair and brown eyes.''

'A candlelight vigil will be held on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Rossdale Memorial Park after the next ground search'.

This is local to me and I have been seeing posters of Samuel all over the place. Due to my job, I am always surrounded by mostly Indigenous people and I am actively using surveillance cameras daily. I've been keeping my eyes open for Samuel, and I hope he is found soon.

I desperately hate saying this, but EPS needs to have trained divers search the North Saskatchewan River. The North Saskatchewan River is huge, and it goes directly through Edmonton. I've been seeing people talk about this on facebook and it's devastating that there has been no reports of EPS searching the river.

Samuel Bird’s family spent Saturday walking in the rain along the banks of the Edmonton River Valley, looking for the teen.

The North Saskatchewan River has a length of 1,287 kilometres (800 mi), and a drainage area of 122,800 square kilometres (47,400 sq mi).

'The change in Bird’s case comes the same day the Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations called for EPS to designate Bird’s case as a search and recovery.

In a statement, the Confederacy said this would enable Bird’s family and Nation to access more resources and personnel to increase search efforts.'

"The Edmonton Police Service is deeply attuned to the national tragedy of missing and murdered Indigenous women and children, and our hearts go out to Samuel's family," Insp. Sean Anderson, with the EPS' major crimes branch, said in Friday's release.

Detectives on the case have followed every lead since Bird was reported missing in June, he said.

"We never stop looking for missing people," Anderson said."

It seems there are so few facts to go on.
Was the video sent to his mother (of her son possibly being assaulted) considered to be authentic, and the victim identified as SB?
Was there anyone identifiable in the video? Was there any way of identifying the location and/or the time of the alleged assault?
Had he been threatened by anyone, did he have any known enemies? I know it’s hard to imagine for a young teen.
I am a mom and a gramma, and I grew up in the Edmonton west end, this hits home for me. My heart truly goes out to his family and I pray they find him.

At first glance at the FB group, it seems there is a belief that SB was dumped in the river, and search efforts are concentrated there. I was just wondering why, is there information that would lead to this conclusion?

As a local, I can say confidently that the river would be one of the most effective places to dump a body. It's huge, quick moving, cold and a bit scary at some points.

I have been seeing a video on Facebook updated by Sam's mom, Alanna, asking for information. She is sobbing in the video and it absolutely breaks my heart.

More people have been coming together to search the river.

‘Bring Samuel Bird home’: Community rallies at Alberta legislature for missing Indigenous teen

"The rally took place at the Alberta legislature at 12 p.m. Chants of Bird’s name filled the air as speakers vowed to search every square kilometre of land and river to bring him home."

"“Samuel represents people that we’ve lost, are murdered, are missing,” organizer Dakota Bear said to the crowd. “We stand together with the family because we feel their pain.”"

"Bird’s mother Alanna also spoke, expressing her gratitude to the crowd for their continued effort. “I really wish Sam was here,” she said. “I just want this not to happen to any other mother or family or father, because it really sucks.”"
