I buy into the theory that Nicky was not paying the required 'tax' to her country for the privilege of working overseas.

This is so heartbreaking. We used to stay at this place twice a year for a week to ten days each time. The staff are so so nice, the concierges remember everyone's story, or why they are here, they would often cook us food and keep it aside since we arrived after 11pm most nights.

It is downtown so it can be a sketchy neighborhood. I think t was icing day a few years ago that a young girl was stabbed to death while shopping with her mom.

This is upsetting to me because this murder happened very close to an elementary school (Winchester) and there are other schools in the immediate area (within blocks). This guy needs to be caught ASAP. If rape isn't the motive than he is liable to strike at anyone, including a child.

TORONTO, Ont. - Police have released new photos related to Tuesday morning's murder of Nighisti Semret in Cabbagetown.

The 55-year-old woman was stabbed to death in an alleyway as she was walking home from her overnight cleaning shift at the Delta Chelsea Hotel.

The suspect remains on the loose and police are hoping these images will trigger someone's memory, and lead them to come forward with any information"

Police want anyone who recognizes the victim by her clothes to call in so that LE can figure out the route she took home that day and they can review camera footage to try and identify the perp.

"An Oshawa physician, coroner and orthopaedic surgeon has examined the footage and said that the suspect seems to have a limp on the left side, Giroux said.

“In addition, [the doctor] felt that the deceased had an unusual gait or a possible limp, and as it turns out, she does, on the left-hand side as well,” he said".

New, (hoping all the kiddies stay safe tonight!)

Not sure I understand this: is there a police theory to this effect or is it something you are just speculating about?

In my opinion they could have made less comments (about race and whether the suspect is from the area and whether the attack is random) until they know something. I believe the witness who intervened in a minor way and didn't seem like a particularly sophisticated person (but that can be helpful and useful) described the suspect as 'mulatto' not "white". I actually read that they were going by his hands but he is obviously wearing gloves I think no person is literally "white".

That's pretty impressive of LE - taking an ipad to the streets. Good for them!

Thanks for posting a link to that video dotr, and I agree with Woodland that Toronto PD seem to be doing a great job of casting their net to capture any relevant tip that they can. I find it unusual (and welcome) to have LE be interviewed on a TV show to explain what they are looking for and what they want the public to do. That was fantastic. Taking the technology to the streets, to reach those who don't have access to the web is also a great strategy. Det.-Sgt. Giroux came across as straight up and welcoming to the public.

Here is a direct link to the 'slideshow' of the suspect. I really did find this helpful as I was having difficulty, in just watching the released video, figuring out where the suspect's face was, where the hat started, where the scarf was, etc. Flipping through the slideshow cleared that up for me.

Also, in the Toronto Star article (link following) there were a few more details about what they saw of the suspect and where.

The surveillance video also shows a car with its headlights on going north on Bleecker, crossing the path of the suspect, who was heading east toward the murder scene.

The suspect, who is believed to have followed Semret for at least 100 metres, either passes in front of the headlights or is mounting the sidewalk on the east side of Bleecker as the vehicle passes.

We know from the CityTV video interview that the video (and subsequent slideshow) were taken from a surveillance camera at the underground parking lot of 85 Bleecker St., a Co-op apartment building which backs onto the laneway where Nicky was killed.

I had thought that the perp might have been hanging around at the end of the laneway, near the sports field, but clearly he had been following her earlier than that.

In a telephone interview from Uganda with CTV Toronto, her husband, Augustus Ntahobali, said his wife’s murder has left him traumatized.

“I haven’t recovered from it,” he said.

Ntahobali is awaiting a visa to gain entry into Canada.

He said he hopes to travel here so he can face his wife’s killer.

“I would like to see him in the eyes and stand in front of him and look at him,” he said

Meanwhile, co-workers at the Delta Chelsea Hotel, where Semret worked, are raising funds to send her body home.

The motive of the stabbing remains unknown

Can't give the acclaim of others here to the work of LE. I remember in the Dylan Ellis & Martin homicide Giroux said it was an attempted car jacking simply because they had an expensive car and even though the person in the car who survived reported no attempt to steal the car or ask anyone to get out of the car he/they just started shooting. Also too much was made of how upper class the victims were and how they could not possibly have been involved in anything. That is just going too far in this day and age lots of VERY nice people take drugs and the only place to get them is from criminals. I am not saying they took any drugs.

I hope there is no racist motive in this case but I would like to know what the man was screaming at the victim as was reported. If there was a racist motive they would anything to hide that fact like for example say that it was a random attack, motiveless.

What was he screaming? That I think would show your motive.

snipped...Police have seized more than 200 hours of surveillance footage and hope video of the murder suspect and victim will jog the memory of potential witnesses.

" Hundreds gathered at a Toronto church Sunday to pay their final respects to a stabbing victim whose random murder sent shock waves through the city.

It was standing room only at the service of Nighisti Semret, who was laid to rest at St. Michael’s Eritrean Orthodox church.

Many who attended the service did not personally know the 55-year-old refugee but were nonetheless affected by the news of her murder.

“I thought it was important for the community to know they’re not alone,” Federal Liberal interim Leader Bob Rae told CTV Toronto. “This is very much a story that affected the whole city and the whole country.”

Although this is a sexual assault in a different neighbourhood, the attack occurred in the morning and the perp had a knife- so might be pertinent here...Close up pics. cctv.

"The most recent attack happened on Monday night, when a 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on Broadview Avenue near Mortimer Avenue, north of the Danforth.

Police said the 9 p.m. assault was particularly violent. The attacker asked the teen for a light and then pulled her into an alleyway.

Investigators from the Sex Crimes Unit are looking for a suspect described as white, about six feet tall, about 40 years old with facial stubble. Police say he was wearing black track pants and a button-up shirt"
