"Maria Rosa Ciciolla vanished in 2006 after getting into a car on the city’s notorious stroll in the southeast.

Mounties are also still trying to identify a man found dead outside Cochrane last year. The remains, found by a local family in a rural area last October, had been decomposing for less than a year, police say.

The Calgary Medical Examiner says the bones belong to a Caucasian man between the ages of 20 and 60 years.

The individual had once suffered a broken nose that had healed

PEMBERTON, B.C. — Homicide cops are investigating the suspicious death of a young man at the Pemberton Music Festival.

Cops ID’d the victim as Nick Phongsavath, 21, of Regina, at a press conference Saturday afternoon.

The cause of death is unknown and foul play could not be confirmed. No arrests have been made and police had no suspects Saturday evening.

Phongsavath's body was discovered near a row of portable toilets Friday afternoon."

I ran across this thread while searching for a missing person from Australia. This UID found July 2014 in Ohio seems to have a hooded jacket with the beaded Australia continent on it. Perhaps Owen's family should submit him to NamUs.gov and contribute DNA. JMO

Bumping for Owen. I think about him a lot and hope he can be found...

Bump. Think of him often and the case still haunts me. Hoping he is out there.

"We were notified a few weeks ago that human remains were found at Hardy Mountain BC... 3km from the hospital that Owen went missing from.
We have come together as a family to receive the news via a phone appointment, the DNA results have confirmed it is our Owen.
Emotionally digesting this news is a challenge. We take solace in the fact that we can bring him home to us. Our resolution has been given.
Many people have loved and shared Owen's short and funfilled life. He is well loved.
We have no further information till we hear from the coroner.
We are so grateful to everyone here for your positive love and support. This has given us the ability to continue our connection, perseverance and strength till this day.
We thank the Grand Forks Search and Rescue for their bravery and diligence in bringing Owen home to us.
For all those with missing family members, may you find peace in your hearts .. ambiguity is not easy and we send you much love. A very grateful Rooney Family xo"

Welcome to Ws chicleto, thanks so much for the update.
Owen's family may not have the outcome they may have hoped for, but it must be a huge relief that he has been found.
Kudos to the Grand Forks Search and Rescue people and to the Rooney family who tried so hard to find Owen.

"While on a training exercise on June 10, 2017, members of the Grand Forks Search and Rescue Unit found what they believed to be human remains in a bush near the bottom of a steep cliff near the base of Hardy Mountain," a statement from the Coroners Service read.

I first read about Owen disappearance while I was volunteering in Canada 6 years ago. I always kept an eye on the Facebook page hoping for good news. At least his family can bring him home now.

"They're a very low priority, it's a very small town, they didn't really search for him."

"In hindsight they could have sent up the helicopter, they could have sent the search dogs."

"They had his backpack for scent, none of that was done."

The British Columbia coroner is investigating the death. A statement from the Coroners Service said a member of the Grand Forks Search and Rescue Unit found the remains in a bush near the bottom of a steep cliff. Sharron said she didn't want to speculate on Owen's death.

"If it's a young child the response [in missing person cases] is great, but if it's a young 20-year-old the response is, Oh they'll turn up."

"Because Canada is such a big country, their statement was he might have wanted to go missing."

Such a mysterious case too. It's very sad that 2 years after his body was found there is still no update on the case. :(

I wonder if Owen would have been able to walk 3 km considering his physical and mental health when he went missing.

Just checked the map (scroll down at the link above) showing the location of where his body was found???..................

THAT walk would have been almost all up hill :cow: :moo:

There are even switchbacks!

:what:

ETA: Unless I'm mistaken, it's approx 6 kms from the hospital https://goo.gl/maps/4ttmCBqGjPS2

I am not sure the location shown in the article is precise. The family said 3 km but I guess it's only approximate. The SAR manager for Owen's case said on Facebook (in one of the comments) that Owen ended up 1300 feet above valley floor bottom.
But even just 3 km is quite a long distance to walk when you have a head injury. He was also hallucinating and I assume he must have been very tired too.

Not sure if it's relevant but at this time of the year darkness starts at 9.30pm (full darkness to be at 10.20 pm)...

“We found his shoe first on June 10,” Grand Forks Search and Rescue manager Barry Savitskoff said.

“We knew what Owen was wearing at the time, we had a description in the file. Then we found a second shoe about 8m away, with bones in it.”...

As a 22-year veteran of the rescue service, Mr Savitskoff led the search for Rooney in 2010.

“I was the original manager,” he said. “It’s a huge relief. We put probably close to 1000 hours on the ground searching over the last seven years. In the first month alone, probably around 500-plus hours.”

The search never stopped. Several times each year since 2010, Mr Savitskoff has co-ordinated a training exercise with local members of the Royal *Canadian Mounted Police.
