I just read the news about the sentencing and I'm furious. Seven years for abusing a helpless baby since birth. Sometimes, I really hate being Canadian.

I guess I don’t understand how we go from “having a motive” and that there was a SA to there was no evidence of SA

As to the question that the baby was bred for that purpose, WHY would he need such an infant? He had the much younger woman, so why was this not enough?
It's bad enough to hear about teenagers and young children being raped and abused, but a newborn?? WHY??? He must be one sick man. There is not a sentence or a punishment allowed by law, that is bad enough for them both.

I've always advocated that this type of crime should result in a mandatory death sentence. I fully support this in this case.

In a Lethbridge courtroom on Friday, Judge Kristin Ailsby handed down her sentence, saying the Crown and defence's joint submission was "fit and proper."

The 52-year-old father will serve his sentence at the Bowden Institution.

The father, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

The Crown had withdrawn charges of sexual assault and sexual interference, stating there was no evidence of injuries consistent with a sexual assault.''

''Doctors say the child's prognosis is not known, and they believe she will suffer from cerebral palsy and may not have vision in her left eye.

The baby was discharged from the hospital in April but continues to get medical care.

The defence says the father is remorseful for his actions and has wanted to resolve the matter since April.

The 31-year-old mother, who pleaded guilty to failing to provide the necessaries of life, is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 18.

Accounting for time already served, the father will spend just over six years behind bars. He'll also have to provide a DNA sample and will have a lifetime ban on firearms.''

*Woman (31) arrested & charged (1/20/23) with failing to provide the necessaries of life. Plead guilty on 6/17/23. Sentencing hearing on 8/18/23.

6/23/23 Update: The Lethbridge father has plead guilty in a horrific case of abuse that left a six-week-old girl hospitalized with traumatic injuries. The father, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, plead guilty to aggravated assault & failing to provide the necessaries of life during a Friday court appearance. In addition, the Crown has withdrawn charges of sexual assault & sexual interference laid against the father, stating there was no evidence of injuries consistent with a sexual assault. If not for the guilty plea, which is considered a sign of remorse, the father could have faced, after a trial, 10-12 years in a federal penitentiary, Crown Prosecutor Suzanne Kendall told the judge. “By taking into account the early guilty plea & (the father’s) expression of remorse & his background, that was how we came to a sentence today of seven years incarceration,” Kendall said. After the agreed statement of facts was shared, Judge Kristin Ailsby gave the father a chance to speak on the matter. He told court "I hope my daughter develops as normal as possible & has a safe, happy & healthy life." The defense says the father is remorseful for his actions & has wanted to resolve the matter since April. The father is set to be sentenced on 8/4/23.

Sorry but not sorry, the mother needs the exact same sentence, period. She as a mother should have protected this innocent baby. I'm sick and tired of the female getting a slap on the wrist. Disgusted.

I know I'm going to make enemies here but we hear this time and time again. I believe that in order to sentence her to two years, she must be sterilized.

Here's MOO: If we are going to allow MAiD in Canada (medically assisted death) then we should maybe also consider incorporating the death penalty into our justice system. Just saying.
