But (Kelley Hannah Moffat, a criminologist at U of T) feels there are myths about prison education that need to be dispelled. "There is a lot of misinformation out there. Prisoners have to pay for books, courses, etc. There is a misperception that Karla Homolka is getting an education from the taxpayers' wallet." But university courses are free for no one. Homolka's parents were paying $300 each for her correspondence courses in sociology and criminology.

So her parents paid, not taxpayers.

Got it.

Don't care, though. She's a raping murderer who should have never seen the outside of prison. She could have bought herself a Doctorate in "best Canadian ever" and it wouldn't make her less abhorrent. So her parents paid for her classes inbetween therapy and denial sessions. Bfd

anger would best be directed at the crown for her deal then, not posters trying to point out the truth.

I certainly don't think it's fair or okay for her children to be treated poorly because of the horrors she committed. They're just children. They didn't even exist when this happened. She's just selfish as usual by even having children in the first place, knowing how Canada and the world feels about her. And interesting that she had three children after annihilating that same amount of souls.

Someone posted that taxpayers paid for her education. Someone else posted a link showing it was her/her parents. It was the repetition I was responding to. I didn't know one way or the other who paid for it, and, frankly, I'm not Canadian, so it didn't much matter to me. Her parents have paid much steeper prices to keep Karla happy than tuition.

It felt like her education was being used to justify/reason/excuse/lessen her crimes. There's not enough education in the world that could help her, though, IMO. Her moral compass is nonexistent.

I'm still dumbfounded that KH was allowed to have children, you would of thought given the nature of her crimes and when it became apparent how involved she was (the videotapes, etc) that even upon her release from prison she'd of had some restrictions placed upon her. Why are social services not involved? I doubt she'd reoffend but the principal is disgusting, 3 young children subjected to a life of knowing their mother is capable of something so evil. It was selfish and irresponsible of her to have children when she raped and was involved in the murders of 3 children in the past.

No wonder she was a fan of PB, imo.

Michelle Erstikaitis

A woman who once claimed to be Paul Bernardo’s biggest fan is back behind bars after allegedly slashing a guard’s throat at the U.S. Consulate in downtown Toronto.

Michelle Erstikaitis, 36, who was deemed a dangerous offender five years ago, appeared in a College Park courtroom Tuesday looking dishevelled and ranting about wanting “a refugee lawyer” to handle her case.

She is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

“I’m a Canadian citizen and I want to leave this country,” Erstikaitis said in open court.

Toronto Police claim the apparently-unprovoked attack unfolded in the lobby of the consulate at 360 University Ave., north of Queen St. W., around 11:15 a.m. Monday.

“We received a call about a woman who was screaming and yelling, being verbally aggressive and refusing to leave premises,” Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu said Tuesday

Also my understanding is there is no sex offender registry in Quebec. I thought otherwise but what I'm hearing today seems to indicate that it is not a requirement in QC. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebec-says-no-to-provincial-sex-offender-registry-1.636113

There is : http://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2005-6/page-1.html

The title is grossly inaccurate, even misleading.

The sex offender register exists since 2004, so it's not that there is no register !!

But the register is available only to the police and correctional services. The general public cannot access it. It's very different from "there is no sex offender register, it needs to be addressed".

This article is sloppy work.

Another Bernardo victim of sorts..

[h=2]Fired CSIS agent with mental health issues suing feds[/h]
[h=3]Andrew Duffy, Postmedia[/h] Aug 23, 2016
OTTAWA - A former spy agency employee with ties to the Paul Bernardo murder case is suing the federal government after being fired in the wake of a mental health crisis that resulted in criminal charges.

A judge stayed those criminal harassment charges in October 2013, but by that time Martin McSweeney had already lost his top-secret security clearance and his job as a technologist with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).
According to court documents, McSweeney suffers from several mental health issues, including extreme anxiety and post-traumatic stress — something brought on, in part, by Bernardo’s murder of Burlington schoolgirl Leslie Mahaffy.
McSweeney, then 15, walked Mahaffy home after a bush party on the night that Bernardo abducted her from her yard in Burlington.
McSweeney testified at Bernardo’s 1995 murder trial. He told court that they had been at a wake for a schoolmate who had died in a car crash, and that he had walked home with her at 1:50 a.m. When he left her, McSweeney said, she was standing in front of the garage. He assumed she would be going in the front door.
He told court that she was worried about a confrontation with her parents since she had exceeded her curfew by several hours. “Don’t worry,” he quoted Mahaffy as telling him. “They’ll just yell and yell at me. Don’t worry. Call me in the morning. We’ll go to the funeral together.”
Mahaffy was locked out of the house. Two weeks later, her dismembered body was found encased in cement in a lake near St. Catharines.

[h=1]Paul Bernardo day-parole hearing tentatively set for March[/h]
CityNews has learned that a day-parole hearing has been tentatively set for Bernardo this March.

This will be his first hearing – as earlier dates have previously been adjourned.
Although Bernardo has been designated a dangerous offender with an indefinite sentence, he became eligible for day parole after serving 22 years behind bars.

OH for crying out loud, the freekin Scarborough Rapist may get DAY parole? There is no way he should even be considered.
He should be locked in a tiny box, forever and a day.

I imagine the victims families are none too happy bout this.

Don't do it, Canada.

HIGHLY unlikely that PB will ever be paroled in any capacity...

Lawyer Tim Danson, who represents the Mahaffy and French families, said he believes the system will work.

“I don’t believe that Paul Bernardo will ever be paroled, now or in the future,” Danson said Monday night.

“Having said that, remember, I represent the victims of Paul Bernardo, and so we will take nothing for granted, we will be very vigilant.”

His clients and the public are entitled to “all the evidence” Bernardo will rely upon to “persuade the parole board that he’s no longer a threat to public safety,” Danson added.

That said however, the Canadian public must never get complacent about the belief that PB will never see the light of day. Thank goodness the lawyer for the victim's families is still handling the case for them.

MOO

no no no no no no no no ....shall I continue?

Please do, sloane.
How much is this farce costing the public?

Kamille, I'm sure they are just going through the motions, but why?
BTW, Kamille, that's my first name, with a C though. I go by my middle name, my nickname is Meal. That's what family has always called me.

The one circumstance that would be interesting if PB got parole, is if he was escorted to KH's place, where he could sit and chat with her about " the good old days".
maybe they might dredge up some memories of others whose paths they may have crossed, unbeknownst to LE....
imo, speculation.

I saw this in my 'New Posts' today but haven't yet had the time to read back through the thread. Is the Karla Homolka named here the same Karla Homolka who IIRC was allegedly linked to Luka Magnotta AKA Eric Newman AKA 'The Vaccuum Cleaner Kitten Killer'?

Luka Magnotta AKA Eric Newman

Bohemian, Luka Magnotta started that rumor, that's all it was.

Dotr, after I read bout the day parole, I told my DH that I would not be surprised if KH was waiting round the corner for him.
A match made in hell, fatal attraction. Whatever you wanna call it, it's just plain scary.

Not that any of this is gonna happen, but...
