Tracking nurse's killer through a footprint no easy matter

A footprint left behind by the killer of Sonia Varaschin could prove to be as damning as a fingerprint, a forensic expert says.

“That's a really good tip, actually,” Jim Eadie, a retired Ontario Provincial Police forensics officer, said in an interview on Thursday. “It can be just as powerful evidence as a fingerprint.”

Eadie said homicide investigators in the Varaschin case have already cleared the toughest hurdle by identifying the maker of the footwear.

Family waits for nurse's body to be released

As Sonia Varaschin's family waits for the slain nurse's remains to be released, mother Michele is preparing to look through her eldest daughter's all-too-short lifetime of photos.

"I'm just glad they found her," her dad Attilio whispered in the bungalow shared with his wife -- and memories of raising their two daughters and son.

Sorrow In Orangeville

soniav.jpeg

What could a nurse who was the embodiment of all that is caring and compassionate have done to deserve a cruel end such as this? Not only did she bring her lightness and love into her work, but she went that extra mile by putting bandages on a “wounded” dinosaur toy of one of her patients

What am I doing wrong with the equation Ruby? I'm 5 ft 2, and wear a size 5. Do I use inches or centimetres? Math is not this blonde's strong point...:waitasec:

I used inches. I did yours. You are the exception to the rule, it says you should be wearing a 9. LOL

So, Pinkeye and RubyRed, while I am by no means a math wizard, from my understanding of the theory, using apples to apples, or in this case, inches to inches, here is how you determine a height based on shoe size.

Pinkeye’s Height of 5’2” = 62.4 inches, as converted here:
http://www.onlineconversion.com/length_common.htm

62.4 inches x .15 = 9.36 INCHES (if 15% of your height is your shoe size, according to theory)

Using this conversion chart for shoe size to inches:
http://shoes.about.com/od/fitcomfort/a/wshoeconversion.htm

9.36 Inches = U.S. Woman’s Shoe Size 6.5.

Therefore, using the theory, if Pinkeye is 62.4 Inches Tall, her shoe size should be 6.5.

Pinkeye takes a Size 5, which is 8.83 Inches. According to the .15 theory, Pinkeyes height, as determined from her shoe size would be 4’9”.

8.83 Inches = U.S. Woman’s Size 5

(A Height of 4’9” = 58.8 Inches x .15 = 8.82 Inches)

Clear as mud?!

Using this same theory, a Men's Shoe Size 10 to 11, would convert to a height of 5'9" to 6'1", FWIW.

I remember that when the RCMP were gathering that shoeprint data many years ago, they were looking for age groups. For example, they had enough young males within a certain age group, but needed females and males of other ages. Gait differences between males and females were part of the agenda, for sure. They didn't gather names, but they did record age, height and weight. I'm wondering if ethnicity was recorded, although I don't recall this question being asked. Participants numbered in the thousands.

Of course, this is not a perfect science.

Sonia's cat back with family

Jasmine, the beloved feline companion of murdered Orangeville woman Sonia Varaschin, is safe and sound in the arms of family.

The cat escaped around the time Sonia went missing — it’s not known exactly when or how — and was repeatedly spotted by neighbours in her Spring Street townhouse complex. For nearly two weeks the black, white and orange Calico with missing teeth, rebuffed attempts by neighbours, family and others to bring her back indoors.

“She is safe, happy and healthy. Thank you to everyone who took the time to help us look for her and/or feed her,” Nadia Anderson, Sonia’s sister, posted in a Facebook message late Thursday night (Sept. 8). “Without you, I am not sure we would have got her back.”

During a recent conversation with The Banner, Sonia’s neighbour, who asked not to be identified, said Jasmine was “freaked out” and acting skittish.

A police officer, along with neighbourhood children, spent some time last week searching for the cat, he said, adding Sonia’s parents have come over a few times to try to find it as well.

“She loved cats,” Darlene, a friend of Sonia’s, previously told The Banner, explaining there are many cat pictures and figurines around the woman’s Spring Street home.
Sonia even dressed as a cat for a Halloween party the year before last.

“I’m crying tears of joy and tears of sadness,” Diana Alyah posted on the Facebook group in response to Anderson’s announcement. “Now she is safe and in loving arms.”

“That’s wonderful news, so happy you got Jasmine,” added Donna Smyth. “She must of been terrified out there all that time, but now she has a safe and loving family to take care of her. What a beautiful cat, Sonia must of loved her very much.”

Jasmine's fur gets on everything, I bet. :cat:

I am so thankful that at least Jasmine is inside, with folks who will love and cherish her as a link to Sonia.

This one, for whatever reason, cuts close to my heart. I'm a (student) nurse; in my rotation in pediatric ER, I too bandaged a child's bear. I, too, have cats. And I'm in the same age range, and single, with a loving family. There is a lot that I identify with in her life.

This world needs Sonias. Her loss is a huge devastating blow to her local family, but also to the world at large.
