Hi Everyone...
I have been watching your comments for weeks now - hoping to hear of an arrest. I was in downtown Orangeville on the Sunday night that Sonia went missing (between about 5:45 and 7pm). A friend and I stopped for dinner on our way through. I have never seen downtown Orangeville... so quiet. We had parked on Broadway near the White Truffle restaurant and crossed to the other side where the Bluebird Cafe is located. There were no other cars anywhere in the area. The Cafe was closed but I wanted to show my friend the menu. While standing in the doorway, I saw a man in the alleyway leading to the parking lot behind the cafe and other downtown businesses. Warning bells went off instantly (and I don't scare easily). He had a knapsack type of travel bag and I thought perhaps he was waiting for someone... but everything just seemed to be wrong. The canvas travel bag seemed almost empty and not what you would expect someone travelling to be carrying. It wasn't dark yet and I wasn't alone... but I couldn't get away from there fast enough. The man made me nervous enough that as we crossed the road, I whispered to my friend about the man and that I felt that he was up to something. I asked her to turn around and get a look at him when we got to the other side. She looked casually but didn't get the creeps like I did. We walked past our car and looked in the White Truffle restaurant that was open. There wasn't any customers inside and I wasn't comfortable hanging around there. When we headed back to our car, the man crossed the road and was headed up the street our way. There was nothing odd about this guy... and yet everything seemed wrong. I couldn't get into the car fast enough. I didn't hear about Sonia missing until late Tuesday night and did contact the Tip line first thing on Wednesday morning. Coincidence... almost definitely -- and if it would have been in any other location (even somewhere else in Orangeville) --- I would have thought nothing of it.

I am sure that the Police are swamped with tips just like this one and I feel for everyone in Orangeville that must be looking over their shoulder. I pray that LE have a solid lead and are keeping an eye on the suspect(s).

WELCOME to WS Rylee!!!

And WOW!!! Thanks for sharing this. Did you get a good look at the type of shoes and clothing he was wearing? I hope LE did get your tip and took it seriously.

Didn't get a look at the footwear -- and have tried to picture him over and over again walking towards us. Was he walking heavy (boots) or lighter (running shoes) - but no luck.

It was early on that Sunday evening but the downtown streets were extremely quiet.

I am not sure if I have never paid so much attention to a case -- or is it not strange how little information is being provided. I am hoping for good reason. I have not seen any mention of the actual "time" that Sonia was last spotted. What time she left her family in Bolton? What time someone saw her arrive home? If she left the townhouse complex again - in her car or on foot?

Hey guys. I'm new here, but saw somewhere that the police will hold a conference today to update the public on sonia's case. What time is the conference? Does anyone know?

Thank you for sharing Rylee and for submitting the tip. Did you feel that guy was looking at you or checking you out or your friend? In which direction did he walk when he crossed the street? Was he young looking, any facial hair, colour of hair? Vibes are generally a great defence mechanism for us all, especially for women. My suspicion since he had the near empty knapsack is that he may have been walking around the parking area looking for cars with stuff to steal like GPS, etc. My car was recently broken into and GPS stolen.
You did the right thing and submitted a good tip, weird guy in the area (walking around in an alley) looking suspicious on a lonely SUnday evening on the same day Sonia was killed.

Welcome to WS!

Finally! Where did you hear this? I can't find any info on line about a presser. Thanks and welcome to WS!

Good questions Rylee.

I found this today in an old article. It is the first I have seen of LE wanting to verify where Sonia was on August 29th.

Investigators are also asking anyone who saw her white Corolla on Aug. 29 or Aug. 30 to contact them.

Welcome Rylee and thanks for your post regarding the man wandering around in downtown Orangeville that night. I've lived in a few small towns and it's always been my experience that "transient/homeless" type people can be found hanging around the downtown area at any given time so it's hard to say whether this person might have something to do with this. Was he the only person you saw? And since it was such a warm day and evening, can you recall what type of clothing he was wearing? Did it seem to be out of sorts for the weather?

Great questions, I'm also curious about any witnesses who may have seen Sonia after she returned home from her parent's house and what time that might have been. Did she go out at all after coming home? Did anyone see or speak to her before she retired for the evening?

Her Mom made a comment about her possibly leaving the patio door unlocked after letting out the cat when she answered the phone. I took that to mean that perhaps her Mom had called her after she returned home that evening and maybe she was the last known person to talk to her.

It's frustrating that there is so little information being released by LE but I hope that is because they have some good solid leads and are confident that they have the person who did this in their sights.

Have the police contacted you to follow up on your tip? If not, it wouldn't hurt to call them again. I would feel much more comfortable, if I were in your spot, knowing that the police had as full a description as possible of any person who had given me the willies as you described this man. It may not lead to anything related to Sonia, but you just never know.

Guys, I'm sorry but I think I made a mistake regarding the press conference. I may have misread an old post. Sorry for getting everyone excited! I'm also quite disappointed now:(

I just looked up the Bluebird Cafe and White Truffle restaurant in Orangeville and it's just one block west on Broadway where Sonia's car was found. It also looks like it's the same back alley but one block west where Rylie saw the guy with the bag. Need Rylie to verify, wow....seems really suspicious.

It's also very close to Wellington St, which leads into the area where Sonia lived.

Well, that was quite the first post, Joey, get everybody all in an uproar, lol. Welcome to Websleuths!

P.S> Next time you might get a "link please?"!

I wish there really was a presser today, it would give the public confidence that something is being done in Sonia's case.

We still have no details on the state of the body ie how it was left.

Why did the perp/perps take the time to move her body away? Why not finish and leave? Someone was injured and there was a lot of blood ( on steps, car, possibly bedsheets). SO why hide her body elsewhere, take all of that time to do it and possibly get caught? Why waste all of that energy? Did the scream and yelling cause the neighbours porch lights to go on? ( No one mentioned looking out their window in my readings) Perp/perps panicked and tried to "hide " her body then? If this was random why not just leave after the crime if it was a B&E gone wrong??

Has this been discussed before?

Does anyone know what the big building is near Sonia's house in the overhead map?

I think the body was taken to hide any DNA evidence the killer might have left. He rolled her up into the sheets and took her out, taking trace evidence with him. Once at the scene he dumps her and then takes the covers with the trace evidence with him to dispose elsewhere. He thinks the elements the take care of anything left on the body. I think the killer took short cuts such as pulling the car close to the dump spot (muddy tires) and leaving her car close to where his was so he didn't walk far. This is why I think the killer is older as oposed to a very young guy.
