I thought "the boyfriend" was not a person of interest? According to this article:

Varaschin closed dating site account months before murder, founder says

BTW, there have been plenty of "plentyoffish" murders in the intervening years. Some examples:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/mani...enty-of-fish-dating-site-court-told-1.5117039

Death penalty trial begins in 2016 murder of Adam Hilarie

Ohio woman, 24, charged with murder of PlentyOfFish date | Daily Mail Online

Woman jailed for choking death of man she met on Plenty of Fish app

Well, plenty of bottom feeders, anyways.

Speaking of fish, there was a photo of Sonia and her boyfriend in front of a boat in the Crime Beat documentary. Does anyone know who the boat under the blue tarp belonged to? TIA.

RBBM I am aware, thank you. Also agree with the bottom feeders comment! Michael Rafferty (Tori Stafford) and Michael MacGregor (Noel Paquette) both met their partners via POF, both are also "locals" (local to Ontario in any case). So it seems a very real possibility that it could potentially be someone from POF.

However, Sonia had deleted/deactivated her account in early January, 8 months prior to her murder. If it was someone from online, they'd have to have been keeping tabs on Sonia for awhile after she closed her profile. When did she meet the boyfriend and where?

Also wondering if the DNA was ever submitted to Parabon? I think I've asked this before, apologies.

Spring 2008 shet met IR online, afaik. Did I understand right from video?

We know that lead investigator Shawn Glassford refused to comment on what Sonia was wearing. We know that Sonia's mother went into her home to gather her belongings, and noted that Sonia's new nightgown was missing. She said in the Crime Beat video that a victim assistance person told her Sonia was wearing it when she was found.

The timeline for meeting IR online is about what you have said, FromGermany, as per a relative on social media.

Sonia's mother also said that once Sonia met IR, there was no one else. She might not have deleted her account right away.

Police won't comment about DNA and specifics of the case, so we don't know if they've used genealogy or Parabon.

We don't know IR's boot size, whiterhino.

McDonald also stated in the documentary that IR stood out at Sonia's funeral as the tallest man present.
The tallest, yes, I noticed, but not the "brokenst" (if that word exists). Having a hankerchief in hand and clean the nose, doesn't mean much sadness necessarily. But MOO, you know.

In the video interview he came over to me a bit sissy-like and a bit "charming" with big children's eyes - Idk, if he is like that or it's his mask only. Btw, I didn't understand all, what he said, and I was too lazy, to hear it twice.

We don't know his boot size and even don't know, what he did for an earning in Canada. Did he ever need boots for his job? I'm interested to hear it finally.

Can someone please tell me if Sonia had a bicycle? I can't recall.
Not sure, but imo, probably..rbbm.
''He’s explaining the angle that the car was found, and how it might tell the direction her killer came to park the vehicle in plain sight. Did her killer come from Broadway, making multiple 3 point turns to park? Did they come from Third St. and make a wide turn to park or do they come down Dairy Lane and pull in like common sense, Glassford said, would suggest?

“Down here, where we are, is to me important. They obviously know that this little laneway’s here and then you can park a car. To leave her car in an area that the public has access to, this car could have been sitting here for days you wouldn’t notice it, whereas a car parked in the middle of nowhere is going to stand out to people,” said Glassford. “Maybe there’s been some thought there or maybe not, maybe they had to get the car back into town and from their takeoff, who knows.”

The “who knows” or unknowns are as much a part of the case as the evidence these days, with the 10 year anniversary of Sonia Varaschin’s disappearance and murder approaching.

Sonia Varaschin was 42 when she was murdered. She was a pediatric nurse that had just made a change in her career to work with a pharmaceutical company. Over the years Sonia Varaschin’s family has noted her outdoor athletic love of hiking, skiing, and biking, and they say, before she was murdered, she appeared to be happy.''

It's good to see renewed and sustained engagement with Sonia's case (especially as we approach the anniversary of Audrey Gleave's murder). I'm sorry if I'm a bit behind / missing something: what are you thinking in terms of the bicycle angle, Gina20? Are you thinking that, if it's missing, that might refute theories on the perp returning to his home (that he had parked his car close to where Sonia's was returned or that he lived very close to there to walk)? Or is there something else you may be thinking of?

The articles about Sonia said she was fond of bicycling. Did she own a bicycle? I don't recall reading about one. Her car didn't have a bicycle rack, but it was new, a 2010 model, correct?

It was not necessary for Sonia's killer to be someone who lived in her neighborhood, and walked home after dumping her car.

It was not necessary for someone to own a car, in order to have a reason to park Sonia's car outside the tack shop. It could be as simple as avoiding leaving her car near her body, so returning it, and taking off on some alternate transportation, like a bicycle left in a bike rack, or maybe even Sonia's own bicycle, stolen from her garage.

I'm not sure how much energy a person would have after a murder, and removing and concealing the victim. It would take a strong person, and I doubt they'd go further than a few kilometres, but it would be stealthy. No one would hear a bicycle. They might not even have been wearing bloody clothes at that point, if they'd brought along a change of clothes, and ditched the bloody ones in a garbage can or dumpster.

Remember the Hamilton bicycle killer that was discussed on Audrey Gleave's thread? Not saying this was him.

HUNTER: Serial killers don't always fit a 'conventional paradigm' | Toronto Sun

I was reading about Helen Sedo's murder. Police released photos of her husband from the day Helen disappeared. He is now charged with her murder. In one photo, he appeared to be carrying a visor helmet with a chin guard. So a dirt bike, street motorcycle, quad, maybe even a bicycle? Helen's burnt-out car was found in or near a gravel quarry in the Huntsville area. Her family owned property nearby. She has not been found. She vanished from her home in Aurora in July 2020.

Not saying that any of these cases are related. Just saying that a getaway vehicle doesn't have to be a car.

Thanks, dotr, for posting that article, too. I 've been re-reading the stories for anything we've missed. I noticed that a local quadding club used to meet up at a property off West Broadway in Orangeville, to travel the old rail line north to Owen Sound. Nobody would pay much attention to quads around there, I think, or to quads around other rail lines in the area, or quads, period.

HUNTER: Serial killers don't always fit a 'conventional paradigm' | Toronto Sun

I'm reposting this as a stand-alone article worthy of a read. It's about a random killer in Toronto, who has stabbed two people to death and fled on foot. This person is believed to be a serial murderer, but the public has only the briefest of information. Whatever has brought police to this belief, it has to be more than just a hunch.

Recalling that Orangeville is north of Brampton, and its borders creep further and further north each year.

I'm keeping an open mind about who killed Sonia, and what kind of person he was.

There is an oft-forgotten crime stopper who has helped to solve many murders over the years: Snowball the cat, from PEI.

Killer didn't have a 'Snowball's' chance as cat's DNA puts him away in murder of gal pal

Three days into a massive search of the island, a clue turned up in the woods, a bag containing a pair of sneakers and a leather jacket, both stained with Duguay's blood.

The shoes were Beamish's size, and the soles had been worn in a way that was consistent with his walk. But it was not enough for an arrest.

Investigators also found 20 white hairs embedded in the jacket lining. A lab test revealed they were from a cat.

Are we sure that there wasn't hair from another pet (not Jasmine) in Sonia's car? Maybe even dog hair? Dog and cat DNA is as unique as each human's.

Were those boots or the perp's clothing found, with Jasmine's hair on them?

They didn't find any boots or clothing from whoever killed Sonia. There is a boot print from a size 10/11 work boot they believe is by the brand Wind River or Dakota.

Tbh I don't really see someone stealing a bicycle from a murder victim and using it as a getaway ride. Especially not after all that activity. Jmo.

It’s always bothered me that the wooded area behind Sonia’s house leads directly unto Broadway Ave and consequently not far from where her car was abandoned. Her killer could have parked his car in town and headed into that area. Could explain why he had to dump her car not too far from where his was parked.
I’ve always felt that her killer approached her house from that way.
It’s a wooded area but there are trails that lead straight into town. The killer was wearing boots in August. I always thought that someone walking through overgrowth in that area would have been wearing boots.
It’s someone familiar with the area who also has knowledge of the surrounding areas where her body was left and feels comfortable there.
I worked many many years ago at a summer camp in the area (near Caledon). Our days and nights off consisted of hanging out in Orangeville as it was the closest town with a bar and nightlife
I am feeling a local perpetrator did this but who has since possibly left the area.
I can’t believe it’s been over 10 years with no answers.

Were those boots found -- was a question, not a statement of fact.

We know that in 2012, police returned to the location where Sonia's body was found.

OPP search area where Varaschin's body was found

OPP said the renewed search was conducted because of “information” received from the public during their investigation into the high-profile killing of the 42-year-old nurse.

Investigators would not reveal the nature of the tip or what exactly they are looking for.

Police divers scoured a pond and officers searched land near Beechgrove Sideroad in Caledon, where Varaschin’s remains were found in a rural area Sept. 5, 2010.

Did they find anything? A murder weapon, clothing? What brought them there? We don't know. They won't say.

I do think that her murderer could have fled Dairy Lane other than on foot, or by car/SUV/truck. I agree that any normal person would be very tired after all that "activity".

Are you familiar with the location on West Broadway where the quadders would meet up for trips along the tracks to Owen Sound? Do you know the Caledon Camp, or do you know when the Caledon Camp closed?

And did the staff wear boots from Marks?
