"It is believed that Tina and Cormier had several encounters, and that he murdered her on their last encounter," Smyth told reporters.

Police would not elaborate on the relationship between the two, including whether it was a sexual relationship.

"Tina was a child and an exploited child and, you know, I think to be fair to the investigation and the upcoming court proceedings, we're not going to make any comments about what form of exploitation went on there," said Sgt. John O'Donovan, the lead investigator in the case.

"There was definitely some exploitation going on, and not just by [the] accused here but several other people."

Why was this violent guy on the loose?!

"The 2012 report says Cormier had at that time racked up over 80 convictions — 17 of which were offences involving violence. Previous court documents show that since 1978, Cormier has spent more than 23 years in prison for various offences that include assault and theft.

“You have used your fists, a knife with a six- to seven-inch blade, a hunting knife and a butcher-style knife in the commission of your offences,” the report stated.

“You have a lengthy history of violent offending and are an individual who continuously breaches the terms and conditions of your release or have committed new offences while on release. You have a dismal supervisions history and continue to reoffend violently despite treatment.”

Funny how some guys can be Mr Congeniality, around the big tough guys in jail, but become vicious killers (alleged) out in a world filled with tiny, young and vulnerable girls.
imo.

A team of filmmakers including "Avatar" star Zoe Saldana are producing a documentary probing the disappearance of Canada's indigenous women.

"Gone Missing" began life last year, when producer-director Leslie Owen happened upon a news story that highlighted 1,200 instances of murdered and missing women.

Since then, Owen has travelled several times to Winnipeg to flesh out her still-in-production documentary, discovering that the scope of the crisis far eclipsed her expectations.
"Gone Missing" focuses on three families, including those close to Tina Fontaine, the 15-year-old who was reported missing 10 days before her body was found wrapped in a duvet cover in Winnipeg's Red River.

Intending to complete the film in the fall, Owen says she hopes it opens eyes in Canada and abroad.

"In Winnipeg, which is one of the places where I've been filming, for many educated indigenous women, there is a fear of getting in taxicabs," she told the Guardian.

"Who would think that just taking a cab across town, one has to be afraid that somebody is going to lock the doors and drive you away and sexually assault you or take you to someone else or take advantage of you?"

[h=1]LIVE UPDATES: Tina Fontaine's voice heard in Winnipeg courtroom[/h]
James Ross opened the second-degree murder trial of Raymond Cormier in Winnipeg by saying there is no DNA evidence linking Cormier to Tina Fontaine's killing.
But he told jurors they will hear a lot of evidence pointing to Cormier.

Ross said it includes a stolen truck the Crown believes was used to move Fontaine's body and wiretap evidence from Cormier's apartment.

The Crown says Cormier, now 55, had had sex with the 15-year-old girl and was worried he might be charged after he found out she was underage.

Fontaine's voice was heard in the courtroom as the Crown played a 911 call from her shortly before her death.

Social worker tells court Tina Fontaine spoke about spending time with older man
Chute said Tina talked about a friend named Sebastian who was 62 years old, did drugs and was going to get her a bicycle.

Tina’s boyfriend told the trial earlier this week that Cormier, who is 55, went by the name Sebastian.

Chute said she urged Tina to stay at the hotel and sleep, but the girl said she wanted to go to a shopping centre

So the blanket may have been his. Maybe. And he was a transient who was sleeping in a tent in somebody's back yard. How many people had access to the tent?
This is such a problematic case on so many levels.

It's a tough case, conflicting stories, drug-addled memories, little evidence, shot through with violence, abuse and neglect -- including that of LE on the night of her death. Still, I think they've done just about enough to get a conviction and, in the wake of North Battleford, I hope they get it.

I have friends in the community who are not confident, however, and I expect some backlash if he gets off.
