Car Explosion - Rainbow Bridge, Niagara Falls

I don't think so. There isn't a straight line from the inspection booth to the secondary area and the distance is too far. From what I can see the driver's speed was already really high and made no attempt to stop. Getting airborne after hitting a retaining wall suggests the driver, for whatever reason, didn't have control of the vehicle. Whether that was a medical emergency, a mechanical problem with the vehicle, or related to illegal substances we probably won't know. That's an almost $400K 12 cylinder vehicle. I'd be interested to know whether the driver was the owner or whether they rented it for a few days. The newest vehicle has three driving modes, the fastest being sports mode that drives like a bat out of hell. If the driver screwed up somehow and hit sports mode he could have lost complete control of the vehicle. Wonder if there will be anything left of the crash detection system to unravel the cause.
If they were having a special celebration, perhaps it was a rented car and the driver made an operational error and couldn't figure out how to correct it? I don't know - the driver was going soooo fast. What happened??

Authorities did not identify the two people killed. CNN reported the driver was a 56-year-old man who was traveling in a Bentley automobile with his wife to attend a concert by the rock group KISS."

And KISS had cancelled their concert, as Paul Stanley is ill with flu. I wonder if the couple didn't realise the concert was cancelled, or if they decided to go to TO anyway if they had a hotel room booked.

Mr. Restaino said in an interview that investigators had confirmed there were two occupants, a man and a woman, who were believed to be a couple in their late 40s or early 50s. Investigators believe they may have been coming from the nearby Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino, though their destination was unclear, he said.

Similar accident in my area 20 years ago, car driving on road speed limit about 30. Driver suffers heart attack, leg stiffens and accelerates to high speed, veers off road to exit ramp crosses intersection and crashes thru glass frontage of a bank. No one injured except driver. Was reported that he was trying for pressing hard on brakes but got gas instead. Imagine powerful car this similar incident would be going very very fast & swerve/curb gets you airborne..

"Shortly before 10 p.m., The FBI office in Buffalo released a statement announcing that its investigation of the incident was concluded and that it turned the matter over to the Niagara Falls Police Department as a traffic investigation."

The Bentley crashed on the U.S. side of the bridge crossing. The couple was on their way to the KISS concert in Toronto, but when that concert was canceled they decided to go to a casino instead.

When I read the first comment in this discussion yesterday, I was already thinking about how to correct misinformation. The vehicle did not originate in Canada, which I knew even before I clicked on the topic. In the media, the blaming was off the charts, along with alarmism and drama. No one seemed interested in facts, everyone seemed eager to create angst, anger, and to use the accident to promote their own cause. Crazy!

"For a few hours Wednesday afternoon, Canada appeared to be staring down the barrel of an unwelcome and potentially painful international crisis. News reports were awash in misinformation following an explosion at the Canada-U.S. border crossing at Rainbow Bridge near Niagara Falls.

Some U.S. media began describing it as a terrorist explosion, caused by a vehicle entering from Canada. Every element of that preceding sentence was dispelled within hours as flat-out wrong."
...

That didn't stop a candidate for president of the United States from appearing on Fox News to promote an aspect of his platform: Building a border wall with Canada. "I have been sounding the alarm bell about the northern border for a long time," said Vivek Ramaswamy during a lengthy interview about an incident he did not witness, was not a subject-matter expert on, and had no insight into.
...

Scrutiny shifted swiftly to Canada's immigration system."

Apparently some recent Bentley’s have had problems with stuck accelerators. I couldn’t find a U.S. recall. Don’t know why.

Good call.

A quick online search reveals there have been acclerator issues on Bentleys for some time.

Many modern vehicles have fly-by-wire tech in the acclerator designs, meaning there are no cables. There are some designs which have had issues with the pedal going right to the floor, on its own.

The Bentley has some serious momentum and acceleration capabilities: See vid, TS 14:30 and onward. This on a 2023-W12 6-litre Twin Turbo, car also available with a milder V8...542 Hp vs 626. That 3.9 seconds (0-60 mph) is pretty impressive for a 2-ton plus luxury sedan.

The description of how the accelerator pedal can stick in the open position is pretty scary. An actual molded piece below the steering column can be factory installed such that it interferes with the sweep of the upper edge of the pedal: press the pedal down and the edge of that trim piece latches it open. It applied to the 2018 through 2021 Flying Spur.

No U.S. or NA recall? Seems a little strange.

this may still unfortunately inspire 'copycats' who think what didn't happen was actually a good idea
Just what I was thinking- I mean it looks so easy- load your car with explosives, hit the accelerator and drive over 100 mph and there ya go- lots of dead bodies ----what an idea for suicide bombers who are thinking "why didn't I think of that" - it scares me---

Car and Driver clocked both the V8 and 12 cylinder versions at 0-60 in 3.5 sec in a 2021 review. Both can accelerate to over 110 MPH in 1/4 mile, 1320 feet, in about 12 seconds. I'm not saying it was stuck but IF the accelerator was stuck in that traffic at a bridge and border crossing that would be terrifying.

These cars obviously get terrible gas mileage so the fuel tank is 24 gallons, almost 2.5 times larger than my gas tank. Gas Buddy reports prices just under $3/gallon in the Buffalo area and over $4/gallon (both in US $) on the other side of the border. I think it is likely they filled the tank before heading across the border. I would have.

Car and Driver review with acceleration tests.
