I know it's become apparent this was not terrorism, but if someone *was* wanting to smuggle a bomb or any contraband from Canada into the US, an extremely busy travel day like today might seem like a good time to cross, when there are simply too many vehicles to blend in with and possibly avoid scrutiny. Even if whatever plan is not to cause trouble on a holiday but at some later date. MOO

I doubt anyone would smuggle a bomb from Canada into the US. Canadians believe the US is imploding on it's own. :(

"The driver and a passenger perished in the wreck, and a CBP officer suffered minor injuries. He was treated at a nearby hospital and released, an agency official said later.

Authorities did not identify the two people killed. CNN reported the driver was a 56-year-old man who was traveling in a Bentley automobile with his wife to attend a concert by the rock group KISS."

Rest in peace. The driver may have had a lapse in judgment or a medical emergency. But I’m surprised by the lack of crossing over the Rainbow bridge jokes.

@Lexiintoronto , we agree on this one! :)

Their pets were waiting for them:

Wonder if we will learn the story behind this event?

My experience is that high volume traffic doesn't mean the lines go quicker. If anything the border guards are on high alert based on the assumption bad actors assume they'll speed up the process and avoid scrutiny.

Tempted to crack a joke about the car probably being Bentley’s “Flying Spur” but will refrain—whether it crashed in an evasive maneuver or due to driver confusion, it’s still a tragedy for the families of the two folks killed.

It's really strange. If the driver had a medical episode, did his foot get stuck on the accelerator? Or did the car malfunction? Or were they fighting in the car and the driver had a rage episode? What about them being told to pull in for a secondary inspection? Was that true?

I don't think so. There isn't a straight line from the inspection booth to the secondary area and the distance is too far. From what I can see the driver's speed was already really high and made no attempt to stop. Getting airborne after hitting a retaining wall suggests the driver, for whatever reason, didn't have control of the vehicle. Whether that was a medical emergency, a mechanical problem with the vehicle, or related to illegal substances we probably won't know. That's an almost $400K 12 cylinder vehicle. I'd be interested to know whether the driver was the owner or whether they rented it for a few days. The newest vehicle has three driving modes, the fastest being sports mode that drives like a bat out of hell. If the driver screwed up somehow and hit sports mode he could have lost complete control of the vehicle. Wonder if there will be anything left of the crash detection system to unravel the cause.

No. They were never in an inspection area. They came from a local casino where they spent minutes. Probably exchanging money. Then headed on their trip to Canada. Well respected couple from Grand Island. RIP

from the article, according to a witness...
" 'He was swerving as he was going down this road here, fishtailing because he was going so fast,' he said."
"'There was car in front he swerved around it then it looked like he hit the fence and this fire started.'"

Fishtailing and swerving around a car.......this doesn't sound like a medical emergency to me.
Seems he was trying to control the vehicle, but couldn't?

Here recently, there was a case of a Tesla on the freeway....driver was unable to control its speed, he could not slow down. Massive malfunction. He crashed but survived.
I've heard of other such incidents.

I wonder if this Bentley had a malfunction of sorts. If so, how terrifying....with a tragic end.

eta...and also this incident : Tesla owner says his car ‘froze’ at 83 MPH on LA freeway

I was in a car with someone having a medical episode once.
And they did a lot of swerving and narrowly missed cars they were trying to pass.
