Additional charges filed against Jeffco rock-throwing suspects in connection with new attack

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — Two defendants in a Jefferson County case, where a young woman was killed after a rock was thrown through her windshield, now face additional charges in connection with a separate alleged attack.

Brionna Boatright with the First District Attorney's Office said defendants Joseph Koenig and Nicholas "Mitch" Karol-Chik now both face an added charge of attempted first-degree murder and attempted second-degree assault. The charges were filed on Aug. 30.

The new charges stem from an incident on April 1, 2023, almost three weeks before Alexa Bartell, 20, of Arvada, was killed.

In the April 1 crime, somebody threw a statue head at a moving car in Arvada, the district attorney's office said.

On April 19 between 10 and 10:35 p.m., seven vehicles were hit by rocks in northwestern Jefferson County, according to the sheriff's office. Bartell was killed around 10:45 p.m. after a rock crashed into her windshield as she drove northbound on Indiana Street in Jefferson County.

I saw this yesterday in the local news. These guys aren't going to be able to say that this was just a whim, didn't understand what they were doing. They knew exactly what they were doing because they had done it before. The indifference to human life is just astounding.

Two of three suspects accused of killing an Arvada woman during a reckless rock-throwing spree at moving cars last April 19 have been charged with attempted murder for an earlier incident, this time involving hurling a statue.

Police now suspect that Nicholas Karol-Chik threw a concrete “Greek statue” head at a car, terrifying an Arvada family on April 1, just weeks before 20-year-old Alexa Bartell was killed when a landscape rock crashed through the windshield of her car in a rural area of Broomfield.

Prosecutors filed the additional charges of attempted first degree murder and attempted second-degree assault on Aug. 30. In motions filed by the prosecution obtained by The Denver Gazette, prosecutors said OnStar reports showed that Karol-Chik's 2016 Chevrolet Silverado was in the vicinity of 82nd and Alkire around the same time the statue head was thrown.

Prosecutors also had cellphone records from Karol-Chik and Koenig that showed similar information, according to the court filings. The motions said that Karol-Chik is the one who did the throwing.

In response to the new charges, attorneys for the two suspects filed motions to delay an evidentiary hearing in the Bartell case set that is set for Friday afternoon. They argued that they want time to contact a defense expert who can speak to the OnStar and cellphone records.

A Jefferson County judge is expected to rule by tomorrow on whether the hearing will be continued to a later date.

Wonder if the two will get their bond revoked?
Because of a recent court ruling, judges can no longer deny bail in Colorado.

Bonds have been set in the millions of dollars to get around this, but until the legislature updates the law some kind of bail must be allowed.

Ah, I saw that in the news too, completely forgot bout it.

Not that it appears any of them are posting a $2 million cash bond.

Waiting to see if the Prelim is delayed that was supposed to happen today.

Preliminary hearing delayed till Oct. 18th.

Prosecution asked to proceed with original charges today saying a lot of family came from out of state for this. Judge said nope.

Judge asked them why they waited so long to file additional charges. Apparently there were multiple other cases they wanted to charge them for but wanted to do it all at once...decided once they got the OnStar data they didn't have enough evidence to charge them with others - but they have evidence beyond OnStar for the additional charges that were just filed.

Today's prelim hearing for the three suspects accused in a rock-throwing spree earlier this year that killed Alexa Bartell, 21, was cut short and rescheduled for Oct. 18 after the defense raised concerns it needed more time to process cell phone and OnStar vehicle data provided by the prosecution. JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. – A preliminary hearing for the three suspects accused in a rock-throwing spree earlier this year that killed a young woman in Jefferson County was cut short Friday and rescheduled for later in the fall after the defense for one of the suspects raised concerns it needed more time to process newly-received evidence in the case.
