GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) — Three teenagers charged with murder in the death of a 20-year Colorado driver who was struck by a rock that investigators say was thrown through her windshield are set to appear in court Wednesday for an evidentiary hearing to determine if their case should go to trial.

Joseph Koenig, Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak were arrested several days after Alexa Bartell was hit in the head by a rock while driving northwest of Denver on April 19 and talking on the phone with a friend. After the call went silent, the friend tracked Bartell’s location with a phone app and found the suburban Denver woman dead in her car, which had crashed into a field.

Investigators have said Bartell was killed by the rock and not the crash.

According to court documents, the teens, all 18 at the time, circled back to take a photo of the crashed car as a “memento.”

Karol-Chik - probable cause in charges 1-15 (all charges)
Koenig - probable cause in charges 1-15 (all)
Kwak - probable cause in charges 1-13 (all)

All parties want a severance hearing in their cases.

Severance hearing set for Dec.12th @ 1pm

Doesn’t necessarily sound like the state will object to the cases being separated.

Breaking-all three suspects accused of the rock-throwing murder of 20-ye-old Alexa Bartell and six other victims bound over for trial. Emotional courtroom. There is already a blame game between the three as to who did what. Investigators still don’t know exactly …

…which one hurled the landscaping rock which investigators say killed Bartell. Prosecutors say all 3 teens are culpable. I did not see any of the teens look at each other during the 4+ hours of testimony and closings.

Was just going to type out something similar - sounds like we will be playing a blame game.

Kwak says Koenig was the one who tossed the rock that killed AB.

Karol-chik says Kwak tossed the rock.

Koenig refused to be interviewed.

One of the only new things we learned (my opinion) in the hearing was that Kwak had just met the other two 3-4(?) weeks earlier. The other two are best friends.

IMO I don’t think it really matters which one tossed the rock, all 3 knew what was happening.

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) — Authorities don’t know which of three young men accused of driving around and throwing rocks at passing cars in suburban Denver hurled the one that killed a 20-year-old woman, the lead investigator in the case said Wednesday.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office investigator Dan Manka testified that the only DNA evidence found on the rock that crashed through Alexa Bartell’s windshield on April 19 was her own. He also said that there was no DNA evidence linking Joseph Koenig, Nicholas Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak to any of the other six other rock-throwing attacks they are accused of earlier that night.

Manka spoke during a court hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence for the men to stand trial on first-degree murder charges in Bartell’s death as well as attempted murder charges for the other attacks.

What a horrible case!
What were they thinking???
Was it fun time for them?? o_O
Disgusting!

For me all 3 are equally guilty, regardless of fancy defence lawyers.
Parents of these despicable youths must be sooo proud -
NOT !!!

RIP to innocent woman who died :(
