I didn't have the above. Thank you so much for sharing. There is "new" information here. I just wish Dan Bender would have spoken the words, "his cell phone has been turned off for several days and we can't track it down" instead of a reporter saying it. It's still good information. I just don't think it would be accurate to use it as a "direct quote" from LE.

I do, however, think it is very important and will certainly add it to the "TIMELINE" that I am also updating which includes ALL information "reported" in MSM about the phone.

The new information you provided about the phone being off for several days and the mention that Dylan may have been hitchiking back home is something I hadn't heard before. Again, thanks for sharing.

I only said the direct quote was a direct quote for the direct quote document, not the other. <modsnip>. Thank you.

Now, what really bothers me is flip flops and shorts in the winter. My son does that. One of my girls will not wear socks. These are minor issues in the overall scheme of things. :great:

What are socks?

Since nobody can offer anyone saying that Dylan's phone was shut off at 8pm, I'm going to take that as a Websleuths rumor.

I'm also taking the facebook rumor in the facebook timeline that the phone was shut off Sunday night as, well, a rumor.

In my searching for something from the police, I was able to find them saying, on November 26, that Dylan's phone had been shut off "for several days". This was 7 days after he went missing - the following Monday that they said this.

Very unfortunately, they also said that they had been unable to track his phone.

This is national public radio in CO -

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Department says the boy’s cell phone has been turned off for several days, and they can’t track it down.

and here's a police quote for the quote document -

Spokesman Dan Bender:

“We’re doing all we can on a local, regional, and national level to put in front of a public eyes pictures of Dylan and letting the public know that he is still missing, we are still looking, and we need help.”

What about the statement by Bender on NG, saying the phone was last used on Sunday evening?

Phone last used != phone turned off

(!= means "not equal" for you non-techies.)

Exactly. He didn't say it was "shut off". Of course, we each can determine when we speculate it was shut off. I think it was shut off several days before November 26, because of the article I posted. It's the most reliable information I have on when it was shut off.

Not for me, because even if the battery was dead, once he plugged it in, he would have wanted to see R's response, IMO, and so he would have noticed it was not charging if he could not. And on my part, this is assuming his phone happened to go dead in the middle of his talk with R., something I find bordering on too coincidental for my comfort, JMO.

So your saying that Dylan stopped texting in the middle of a conversation and he would have plugged his phone in a charger immediately to finish his talk?

I think I need to find a good timeline to study.

I am not sure why people say turned off either just because I always assumed no one could tell whether it was turned off, broken, or the battery died. I am probably being really nit-picky there, but I am not sure if LE could even say it was turned off because of that.
However, I still think it could have been on and just no activity on it, but hopefully lots of lovely pings we don't know about.

It didn't seem to me at all like Dylan stopped talking in the middle of a conversation.

I have got to chime in on a point that is so ridiculous I cant believe it: ok I raised 4 kids. You all have raised many as well.
I don't care how hard a kid deals with mornings, will any of you tell me who puts their kids to bed in fresh street clothes!??? I am sorry but I have never heard of any mom I know even the most spoiling and accomodating moms, who puts their kids to bed in street clothes. From the poorest to the richest no kid goes to bed in street clothes. Shower? Bath? Of course. Socks pants school shirt? Cant even think how a child could b comfy enuf to sleep like that. Ugh! Not buying it. Sorry with all due respect I cant imagine any mother putting her child to bed with tomorrows street clothes on. Sorry that speaks more to a PARENTS inability to deal with mornings than a child. And 2 of my 4 were heavy sleepers, bad morning grumps. Who the hell is running this show? Ok let the arrows fly. Just FWIW....IMOz it has do little relevance as to b ridiculous....but since this has been stated about a half dozen times I couldn't handle it any more.

Still catching up but had to address this. My kids are 9 and 12. They don't wear jammies to bed. They typically wear shorts/tshirt or underwear depending on the season. My boys don't wear jeans. They wear athletic shorts and tshirts to school, no matter the temperature outside. Athletic shorts and tshirts are comfortable. I run the show and I know how to pick my battles. Clothes is not a battle I'm going to pick.

snipped

And so many other cases like this one were small communities with very little crime and no kidnappings of children before an abductor struck.

Who is to say he started with Dylan? A stranger pedo was in our area a couple of years ago who tried to coax a young boy into his van. The boy's mom got his tag number and LE caught him and when they did he had no reason to even be in this area cruising the streets or even the state for that matter. He had no job and when they ran his name he was wanted in three other states for sex offenses against children.

It shows just because it has never happened before doesnt mean it cant happen at any given time.

IMO

Agree that abduction can't be taken off the table as a possibility (sorry to open that can of worms again!)

As some of you may know, here in Australia we had the case of Daniel Morcombe (13) who was waiting for a bus, missed the bus, was then abducted and killed by an SO .... and this all happened with many people driving past .... and not one of them stopped to help him, no-one alerted the police (grrrr!) Many didn't even say anything until years later when the perp was finally found and apprehended, and then they said 'oh yeah, I saw that man trying to talk to Daniel'.

(And again I apologise if I'm a day late and a dollar short with this comment ... so hard to keep up with all the pages of all these threads)

What point stands? His mother said he had a hard time with mornings, so hard that on school mornings, when he had to get up he'd shower and dress the night before. Meaning on non-school mornings, he'd tend not to get up. That's how I take what Elaine said. She's his parent, his other parent, Mark, indicated the same thing - that Dylan had a hard time getting up when he didn't have to.

I take the parents at their word, because they surely know Dylan better than I do.

Or conversely, it's just as likely that Dylan had an easier time getting up on mornings when he had something planned that he was looking forward to. (IMO)

Ok I really had to think on this one as my children would often shower and then go to bed. At 13 I rarely tucked them in so to speak.

There were as well times when I was on business trips etc.

To my knowledge they never wore the clothes they were going to wear the next day to bed.

Having said that, I do know of a parent whose child had autism, and mornings were very difficult for him, thus they did get him ready for school the next day the night before which saved them alot of grief.

My skin is crawling a bit right now with the discussion. Being in bed with actual clothing on icks me out for some reason. That being said, most people I know have slept in regular clothing or even done the dress the night before thing especially as teenagers or college students. I don't think it makes someone a bad mother to allow it. I am sure there are more important issues to battle over.
JEANS in bed really get me. My boyfriend tried to crawl into my bed one time with jeans on and we almost had to break up :p

Please allow me to say I don't believe a person is a bad parent to allow it. It makes my skin crawl too. I just am having difficulty with changing a lifelong habit to that. It simply wouldn't have occurred to them. How in gods name can you sleep in binding street clothes? Even my huge son sleeps in his boxers. As PaulR said it takes no more than a minit or two to shinny into your daywear.

I believe
that the battery died before DR was reported missing, but I wouldn't want to guess at how long before that. I really doubt that it was ever turned off. MOO

It didn't seem to me at all like Dylan stopped talking in the middle of a conversation.

It didn't to me either. All the arrangements were made for the morning. I think Dylan just fell asleep like his Dad said, was tired and didn't bother texting back "OK".

What about the statement by Bender on NG, saying the phone was last used on Sunday evening?

yep, "no activity whatsoever since Sunday"

I really don't understand all the nit-picking about Dylan's phone being turned off Sunday evening. The family facebook says it. Law enforcement says no activity whatsoever since Sunday night. Other news outlets say it was turned off.

I'm thinking....it was turned off.

and are you of the opinion that Dylan just didn't bother calling or texting anyone at all the next morning either?

"Can I come over at 6:30am?"
"Sure, I will let you in."

What more is there to say? One doesn't need to perform the twenty minute farewell ritual that my parents seem to employ whenever I am leaving to communicate that there's nothing more to say.

Nobody has said there was any activity. We've just said that having no activity on a phone doesn't necessarily mean the phone was turned off. MOO
