Oh gotcha! Sorry, I was confused. I thought it was maybe a combination - campground on the outskirts of a military base or something like that.

It did get me thinking about annual passes though. I bet if you (general you) have one it's even easier to get into a campground without showing any kind of ID, even if it's someone else's pass.

You aren't really far off base. The campground was not far from the military base at all, I think 30 minutes.

It could very well be easier. If you have a pass, you may not have to show anything but your pass to get in.

This is a bit a way from campgrounds, but a friend was telling me about a pass she got to the lake last summer. She got family passes, and they had your picture on them supposedly so no one else could use them, but they never checked the pictures against the person presenting them, so often they took different friends on the passes.

I wouldn't think there would be that many sites being used in late November in the Colorado mountains though.

I know I wouldn't be using them. I prefer the comfort of indoor heating when it's cold, but some people would I guess. Those who love the great outdoors. I only like the outdoors in the summer time.

Besides hunters there's hikers and ATV'rs that might use the campground. And gear these days is pretty warm, probably wouldn't feel cold in November at all.

Vallecito lake is high altitude. 8,000 feet. So sunny days may be nice but night time will be very cold.

Good questions. I wonder if they'd even have any way of knowing. If the person/people didn't have a reservation, didn't have to show ID, pay, or leave vehicle info, then they camped and left, I don't see how anyone would even know they were there. I suppose other campers might notice, but 80 sites is a whole lot of space to spread out in if you don't want to be right next to other campers.

I'd be interested in knowing if they can be tracked as well, but I'm guessing it would be very difficult. All MOO.

Exactly... if that person even had to check in at all, and that's only if the check in required a name. Scary thought.

I have wondered this also.

I imagine they could find a person like that's information maybe from other campers photos and videos...

Maybe someone inadvertently got an image of their tag or vehicle or even that person.

This isn't really on topic, but all this talk about "unknown" campers reminds me of a couple of things. First an episode of Criminal Minds where there was this guy who lived in the woods, and as far as I remember no one knew he lived there. He would pick off the kids that straggled away from their parents at campgrounds. It also reminds of of a few horror movies, "The Hills Have Eyes" and "Wrong Turn" where there were unknown people living in isolated areas that stalked and preyed on people. Basically the whole, "unknown" element gives me the creeps.

Don't directly quote me, but didn't MR say in that interview with Tricia that Dylan liked to explore the campgrounds when he visited? If he did, it could be because he could usually find kids his age to hang out with, maybe?

This article purports to have text messages between CR and MR, dated November 30, December 1 and January 16, 2013. It would appear that "blocking" occurred sometime after that.

I don't know anything about this link, but it appears to be some kind of blog -- is it considered MSM? I'm questioning because it has those texts between MR and CR which were not allowed on here previously. Is it a legitimate source?

Spotty cell reception, dead phone, isolated area? All it takes is to come across one "shady" person in an isolated area for something "bad" to happen. While it is rare, it does happen. "Wrong place, Wrong time" kind of thing.

I hate to keep going back to the hitchhiking thing, but maybe he could have gone there to hitch a ride to his friend's house?

I think the first half of your question is important. I agree, not contacting anyone Monday is a major issue for any theory that has Dylan leave the house voluntarily. IMO
