Details of Disappearance
Nichols was last seen in Colorado Springs, Colorado on October 9, 2012. She left her home in the 6700 block of Mission Road, en route to Denver, Colorado with two unidentified brunette women, but it's unclear whether she ever arrived there. The last call on her cellular phone was placed at 11:45 p.m. She has never been heard from again.

Nichols is described as a very social person who maintained regular contact with family and friends and frequently used social media; all this contact stopped the night of her disappearance. She also left behind her purse, identification, money, clothes, makeup and other belongings.

Her mother stated Nichols's behavior changed considerably when she was a teenager: she was arrested for shoplifting at age thirteen, started using heroin, and ran away from home at sixteen. Her parents tried to get her psychiatric help and counseling, but Nichols resisted taking the medication prescribed for her.

She enrolled in several different alternative schools, eventually graduating from Life Skills of Colorado Springs. After graduation, she took a waitressing job and began modeling. She continued to use drugs, however, even after she moved with her parents to Chicago, Illinois. She enrolled in a drug treatment program, but was discharged for failure to follow the rules.

Nichols eventually returned to Colorado Springs on her own and lived with roommates. She traveled frequently to Denver to look for modeling work and had placed a profile on the online modeling website Model Mayhem before she vanished. She was having financial problems and authorities believe she had been involved in prostitution for up to two years before she disappeared.

Nichols's case remains unsolved and foul play is suspected.

This was one of two or three similar cases in CO. It is interesting to hear she was seen with others at the time. I wonder where LE got the photos. Off her phone? Social media site?

It's been a while since I've followed up on this case so I'm surprised to see the info that she was seen with two other women AND that they have a photo of one of them. I wonder why I had not seen that back in 2012. I forgot about it? Or is this something that came out years later? If it is the later that has to be frustrating if it had been brought out earlier the chances of making an identification could have been much better.

Remains likely belonging to missing woman found in El Paso County, suspect in custody (kktv.com)
''According to Sheriff Bill Elder, investigators found human remains recently in Black Forest following information received by detectives re-interviewing someone connected to the case. That individual provided new information that led to a search along Burgess Road where the remains were located. Those remains likely belong to a woman, Kara Nichols, who was reported missing on Oct. 14, 2012 by her father.

A suspect, Joel Hollendorfer, was taken into custody on Monday and is charged with 2nd-degree murder. 11 News has requested his affidavit and we hope to provide updates as they become available.''

Man accused in cold-case killing expected to be charged with first-degree murder; bond set at $1M

A Black Forest man accused in the death of 19-year-old Kara Nichols, reported missing nearly 10 years ago, and in the concealment of her body on his property will likely be charged with first-degree murder, prosecutors said at a Wednesday afternoon advisement hearing.

Joel Hollendorfer, arrested Monday in the death of 19-year-old Kara Nichols, will likely see his charge in the case upgraded to first-degree murder, Christina Perroni, prosecutor with the Fourth Judicial District Attorney's Office, said.

In arguing that he was a flight risk and had the "potential for retaliation" against certain individuals, Perroni noted Hollendorfer, 46, had an extensive criminal history which extended back to 1994, including at least five prior felony convictions.

She added that Hollendorfer’s mother, Betty Hollendorfer, was his “only tie to the community,” and added that her “knowledge and involvement in this crime is questionable at this time.”

Betty Hollendorfer, who Perroni said lived on the property the remains were found on, is listed on the home's records with the Office of the El Paso County Assessor.

Hollendorfer is currently accused of second-degree murder, but in light of prosecutors’ expectations to upgrade the charges against him, El Paso District and County Magistrate Deborah Pearson set his bond at $1 million. If he posts that bond, she ordered him to wear an ankle bracelet, and not to leave the county.

She also ordered him to surrender his passport, saying she was concerned he was a flight risk, as well as a risk to the community.

Hollendorfer is also currently accused of tampering with physical evidence in the case. He's due back in court Feb. 17 for a bond hearing.

Interesting comment they made about the mom. I had a gut feeling she might have some knowledge after looking at SM.

Interesting in that this case was just updated a month ago on The Charley Project and that was the first time I heard mention of her in the company of two other women. Now there seems to be a resolution.

I don't see anything on that link relating to two other women. Is anything known about those women?
