The trial of Reginald Maclaren, who is accused of killing and dismembering his wife and daughter with an ax last year, began this week.
Lawyers for both the defense and the prosecution gave their opening statements in front of a jury on Tuesday.

The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office presented its opening arguments on June 25 to jurors in front of District Judge Michelle Amico. Chief Deputy District Attorney Jacob Adkins and Senior Deputy District Attorney Corrie Caler introduced to jurors for the first time evidence, including an ax they say was used as the murder weapon, a saw Maclaren allegedly used in an attempt to dismember the bodies, trash cans the bodies were found in and more.

Public defenders Regina Fountain and Andrea Kremer, who are representing Maclaren, encouraged jurors to think about the case with “curiosity and an open mind” to one question.

During the proceedings, attorneys from the DA’s office played a six-minute 911 call that Maclaren made in which he claimed that he found his wife and daughter murdered in their apartment on March 25, 2023. When asked by the 911 operator, Maclaren alleged that nephews in his family had potentially harmed the two women.
Both prosecutors and defense attorneys questioned the 911 operator who responded to the call in court on June 25. Additionally, the prosecution referenced evidence and testimony provided by Englewood Police Department detectives last year.

Prosecutors also said the jury would hear from several witnesses including a neighbor who saw Maclaren on March 25 and recalled him saying he would be going overseas.
