416 Fire | Another 127 homes put under pre-evacuation notice

"LA PLATA COUNTY - The 416 Fire burning in southwestern Colorado continues to grow more than a week after it was first reported.

The blaze has burned 23,378 acres as more than 900 firefighters work to battle it back. As of Tuesday morning, it is 15 percent contained. The fire saw significant growth over the weekend on the west and northwest sides."

"Firefighters spent Monday evening constructing a line from the cliff face near Hermosa Creek south to Tripp Gulch. This "burnout operation" means that when the fire lines reach the area, it will meet a parcel of land already burning.

Burning the burnout operation, firefighters will continue to drop water to decrease the fire's intensity allowing for more control, according to the Incident Management Team. Burnout ops are expected to continue into the early morning hours."

"From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, the Colorado Department of Local Affairs and the Colorado Office of Emergency Management will join the La Plata County government in hosting a disaster assistance center at the La Plata County Fairgrounds.

"Dozens of hand crews built fire lines around homes, removed vegetation and conducted burnouts on the south side of County Road 202 near Hermosa. The burnouts require care and precision: Fires are set to various parts of a hillside and allowed to run into each other as they move up the mountain. It is a controlled process with fuels removed piecemeal, thereby preventing a massive inferno."

Miss you Foxfire, you might have replied "Yes, Margarita, when I was captain..."

"Despite the stark landscape, firefighters on County Road 202 were treated to a rare sight Monday: A black bear darted past them, perhaps in search of more suitable habitat, perhaps frightened by all the firefighting activity.

The 416 Fire had grown to more than 22,130 acres as of Monday morning – the most recent estimate available – and remained 10 percent contained as of Monday night."

Unknowing hikers remain in San Juan Natl. Forest despite closure for 416 Fire

"Many hikers and backpackers may remain in the San Juan National Forest despite its closure, said Cam Hooley, spokesperson for the U.S. Forest Service said.

"It's not possible for us to try to track all those people down," Hooley said.

The San Juan National Forest will close fully Tuesday to keep people out of dry areas that are ready to burn."

"The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but authorities said Tuesday that there was no weather in the area that could have sparked such a fire, hinting that it was likely human-caused."

"Gov. John Hickenlooper issued a statement on the fires burning across the state Tuesday.

“Colorado has allocated more resources for fire fighting than any other state in the Rocky Mountain West. We have seven interagency heavy air tankers fighting the Colorado fires and, through experience, we have learned how to integrate our state resources with our federal, county and municipal resources,” he said. “We recognize the conditions are dry and hot. Public health and safety are the top priorities in fighting any fire. If you are in the fire zones, please follow safety procedures and directives. Our state agencies are here to support you. As we have proved time and time again, Coloradans are resilient."”

Thanks for your fire coverage Margarita. You’re so good at it, but I’m sorry it’s necessary again. It will be our turn in southern Oregon and far northern California before the season is over. I guess we’d better enjoy our deck while we can. Thunderstorms are expected here on Saturday. :(

Badger Creek Fire Update - June 13, 2018 - 9:00 a.m.

Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team Black
Shane Greer, Incident Commander

Information Center: (307) 745-2378·
Hours of Operation: 7 a.m. - 9 p.m.

Badger Creek Fire Grows to 5,241 Acres

Public Meeting: There will be a public meeting Wednesday (June 13) at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Albany County Fair Grounds. Representatives from the incident management team and cooperators will provide an update on the Badger Creek Fire and be available to answer questions from the public.

Current Situation: The Badger Creek Fire grew to 5,241 acres as of Tuesday night. While firefighters focused their efforts on structure protection Tuesday, crews were able to begin building some containment lines in the southwest portion of the fire. Aviation resources were used to assist firefighters working on the ground with both retardant and water drops.

Rocky Mountain Team Black assumed command of the Badger Creek Fire at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13. Firefighters will continue structure protection and assessing fire effects in communities on Wednesday. Crews will also continue to build and improve fire line on the south and west portions of the fire. On the east and north portions of the fire, firefighters will look at opportunities to engage the fire where they will have the best opportunity for success while minimizing fire growth.

Structures have been destroyed on the Badger Creek Fire, and law enforcement is attempting to contact the property owners of those structures at this time.

Weather: The forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with temperatures ranging from the upper 70s to low 80s on Wednesday. Winds will be out of the southwest at 6-10 mph in the morning, transitioning to west winds by the afternoon with gusts up to 20 mph. The inversion holding the smoke in the lower elevations is expected to lift by late morning. Firefighters anticipate the fire to become active by early afternoon as the clear skies allow the sun to pre-heat the fuels. Temperatures will cool slightly in the evening to the upper 60s. Smoke dispersal will remain good until temperatures cool overnight, when there is a likelihood for smoke to settle in the lower elevations.

Closures and Public Safety: Two road closures remain in place at this time. Highway 230 is closed from Woods Landing to the Colorado state line. Highway 10 is closed from Woods Landing to the Colorado state line. All of the existing evacuations remain in effect.

Albany County requests those who have been evacuated to email ema@co.albany.wy.us with accurate contact information.

Tip Line: The cause of the Badger Creek Fire is under investigation. The public is asked to call 307-745-2392 (select option 5, and leave a detailed message) with any information on activity they may have seen near Forest Service Roads 501 and 544D in the area of the Mountain Home OHV Trail system on Sunday (6/10) afternoon.

Badger Creek Fire grows to more than 5,000 acres Tuesday

"CHEYENNE, Wy.(KGWN)- Dry and windy conditions fueled the Badger Creek Fire on Tuesday June 12.

The National Forest Service says as of 9 pm on Tuesday the wildfire on the Wyoming-Colorado border has burned 5,244 acres. Growth this afternoon was primarily to the east.

The amount of fire personnel on scene has also doubled to 200 and additional resources continue to arrive. Currently there are four Hot Shot crews and two Type 2 crews. Air resources included two Type 1 helicopters to assist with retardant and water drops, one Type 3 helicopter for reconnaissance, and one air attack plane. There have been no firefighter injuries reported to date.

The forecast calls for continued hot, dry, and windy conditions and will affect fire behavior again on Wednesday."
