416 Fire now 45 percent contained
(Again, they were anticipating full containment by June 30...)

"“Even though we have a decrease in smoke from the fire itself, that smoke can still settle down into the valleys once those temperatures cool,” Vonk said.

A total of 459 personnel are working on the 416 Fire. Five helicopters continue to be available for bucket drops, though some resources are being released from the fire to be re-mobilized to higher priority fires in the region. Currently, 10 wildfires are burning throughout Colorado.

The Burro Fire, two miles west of the 416 Fire, is currently at 4,578 acres and is 40 percent contained. Though the two fires are close in proximity, there is practically zero chance of the fires merging, Vonk said.

“They look close when you’re putting those two fires on a map, but that’s as the crow flies,” Vonk said. “You also have to account for that fire traveling up and down both sides of a ridge and some of those ridges are over 10,000 feet in elevation.”"

It all began, according to the Eagle County sheriffs office with what is called a tracer round. “It’s a bullet that has an incendiary product in the base." Mike Jones, of Bass Pro Shops in Denver explained."

Spring Fire grows to 95,700 acres, nearly 1,000 firefighters on scene

"COSTILLA COUNTY, Colo. -- The Spring Fire burning in southern Colorado continued to explode in size as acreage reached 95,739 as of Wednesday evening, according to fire officials.

This makes it the third largest wildfire in state history after the Hayman Fire in 2002 and the West Fork Fire complex (technically three separate fires that merged) in 2013."

Why isn't the Colorado supertanker helping fight the fires burning across the state?

"Paperwork may be the issue, as Colorado Division of Fire Protection (CDFP) officials told Denver7 on Wednesday. The next step for the Global Supertanker is getting approvals to fly to affected areas."

Eyes are burning and woke up coughing. Definitely hazy skies.

I biked to downtown Denver to watch the Elitch amusement park fireworks last night by the South Platte River. Their finale started lots of small fires all around the launch area by the river and they had to call in fire trucks to help put them out. Dry times indeed in Colorado.

Poor Santa Barbara County. The wildfire is completely uncontrollable.

416 wildfire cause under investigation as Durango questions whether Silverton train is to blame

'“There has been a lot of controversy and rumors about whether the train started the fire,” said Theresa Blake Grave, spokeswoman for the Durango Chamber of Commerce.'

'“This fire was a freak accident in a drought. I can’t tell you if the train started it or not because that’s not what you do when you have insurance,” said Al Harper, who along with his wife Carol has owned the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for 20 years, and recently consulted with his insurer’s adjusters and attorneys.'

"Fleming said the fire started 20 feet from the tracks moments after the train passed by, noting that there were no nearby campers and there hadn’t been a storm in three weeks."

Harper acknowledges the fire started 20 feet from the tracks, but he says the train may not have caused the fire. The 416 fire could have been started by a camper, a dropped cigarette or a piece of glass magnified by the sun, he said.

o_O OMG, talk about total denial. A piece of glass magnified by the sun? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Personally I think he should be able to run his trains again. But only after he accepts responsibility for the fire.

Colorado wildfire update: Rains bring mudslides to 416 fire area; drier air expected Wednesday.

416 FIRE:
"The fire, which started on June 1 about 13 miles north of Durango, has burned more than 54,000 acres and was 50 percent contained Tuesday night."

"The highways (US 550, US 160) were shut down when heavy rains from thunderstorms swept through the area between 5 and 6 p.m., the weather service said. Areas that were flooding included Rockwood, Hermosa and Trimble."

SPRING CREEK FIRE:

"The fire, the third largest in Colorado history, has burned more than 108,000 acres and was 91 percent contained Tuesday night."

"Moisture from the showers and storms will likely be limited, while lightning and strong winds are possible. Starting Friday, moisture should increase and flash floods and mudslides will be possible in burn areas."

LAKE CHRISTINE FIRE:
"The fire, which started on July 3 and was human caused, has burned more than 6,800 acres and was 59 percent contained Tuesday night."

"A drying trend is expected to start Wednesday, with lower humidity and occasional erratic winds through the end of the week."
