As a mother I would like to think that no mother would ever try to commit their child without reason. Having said that I'm sure their are parents out there that would, but I would think professionals would be able to "test" these children and find out if they are in fact troubled. I hope that professionals wouldn't be able to be tripped up by "troubled" ones. But I also look for good in all so maybe I am wrong?

The human brain is extremely complicated and the science of psychology is little more than a century old. Some would say psychiatric treatment is more an art than a science. It just isn't that accurate, I'm afraid.

And as JBean wrote above, committing people right and left on the say-so of their relatives opens up an entirely different can of worms.

I had not heard this

60 minutes reporting that the computers in the mothers home was "smashed".

Mother was found in her bed, deceased.

O/T I just got a FB message..........
Monday wear green & white.........school colors
sadly I have no green winter sweaters..........
I guess I'll make a green & white ribbon to wear on my coat.
Now what color green?

I was going to wear a black arm band tomorrow at school. I saw on CNN some sports teams and others doing the same in memory of the victims.

Moments of silence and 26 flares set off at the Monday Night Football game.

This service is truly amazing. xoxo to all those speaking at the vigil. The words are like medicine.

@Pensfan... No disrespect but how do you medicate someone 13+? Do you grind it in their food/drink is that acceptable? Again I'm not trying to be disrespectful I'm seriously asking a question as to how you medicate someone who refuses to take medication? I remember when my kids were sick and need anitboitics and I literally had to hold them down to give them their rx and they were 6ish. I felt aweful.

Injection therapy given by the community mental health center to the rescue! The first long-acting antipsychotic injection is always the toughest, but very necessary when the patient is noncompliant. These are especially beneficial to those experiencing their first psychotic episode, those with severe psychopathology, and those with comorbid substance abuse. Once the patient is not psychotic or violent, it is much easier for them to be encouraged to take their next month's injection. These must, of course, be given on schedule. There are currently five different such medications. The caretaker should also be provided with short-acting antipsychotic medications in case there are acute severe behavioral problems that occur at home.

a quote from Shana Alexander's book about the Patty Hearst kidnapping and criminal trial: Anyone's Daughter, 1980 paperback edition, page 527. it has never left my mind

Child psychologists recently have identified a mysterious new category of people whom they call "invulnerable children." The mystery the doctors set out to answer is why some kids simply do not break down, despite the most stressful, deranged, impoverished, bereaved, punishing, and catastrophic of childhoods. "These splendid children," one doctor writes, "have this extraordinary equanimity." He illustrates his point by telling a story about three dolls, each one hit by a hammer. One doll is glass, one is plastic, and one is steel. The first shatters, the second is scarred, but the third gives off "a fine, metallic sound. It's that sound that we're all trying to investigate," the doctor says. Patricia Hearst, too, has been hit by a hammer. Yet with her, one still hears no sound at all.

I'll have to give that a read. I know people who had a much kinder childhood than me who are far more "broken." I've always wondered why that is. By many standards, I should be a mess- my childhood makes other people cry more than it makes me cry- but I really am ok. I processed and moved on, and I'm a genuinely happy person. The doll analogy is really interesting.

Hi Nova. Additionally, diagnosis is so difficult and can often take years of documenting behavior with a professional. We can all only hope that someone's illness can be dialed in and medicated properly before something catastrophic happens.
Very often mental illness is deeply intertwined with drug abuse- then you have the added layer of trying to figure out where the illness and drugs begin and end.
As for a 5150, if you told me right now you were suicidal and I walked you into ER for a 72 hour hold- if you told them I was mistaken- then that would be the end of it. You would be out within the hour. if you actually tried to kill yourself - then they would hold you immediately.

Thanks for this post Pensfan - so let's say this works while the parent is in control of what the child takes.

Once the child becomes an adult and can choose to stop the medication or become non-complaint in regularity of meds aren't we facing a bigger problem with an adult who can reek havoc if they choose.

And isn't this problem and resolution just delayed?
The best answer is hyper-vigilant and dedicated mental health caseworkers who retrieve his/her clients every month if they don't show up for their long-acting antipsychotic injection.

Oh yeah....the county needs to pay these caseworkers a much larger salary.

I heard this earlier....what I found interesting is if there is a hard drive present....AL was said to be a computer "nerd" and we all know a hard drive is almost impossible to destroy....so I am anxious to hear but also knowing we may never be told.

I am crying through the words, but the words are uplifting and healing...perfect for the vigil.

I am sure he zeroed it out several times over before destroying it.

Why would he destroy his hard drive evidence? What would he hope to accomplish with this? He should have known he would die at the scene, either by LE or from his own hand. I was sure he would leave a note, an explanation, anything. To HIDE and DESTROY information is something more diabolical than I had anticipated, whether he had mental issues or not. Even though what's done is done, ultimately everyone deserves an explanation for why this happened. JMO

President: ..."One child even trying to encourage a grown-up: I know karate, so I'll lead the way out."

The killer did not want anyone to have an explanation-he knew it would be more torture that way-never knowing why.
