I have 54 rolls of toilet paper for a household of 3. BUT, but, I have a feeling some of my adult children are not stocking up as I have warned them too. We have 15 face masks and only a couple small pocket size hand sanitizers. I have the supplies to make my own however.

I have 3 toilet rolls for a household of 4, no face masks, and I think there might be a small bottle of hand sanitizer in the camping box.

I feel like the UK isn't taking it as seriously as the US, which is ironic considering we're comparatively packed in like sardines. So I asked in the local supermarket whether I needed to panic buy anything and they said no, plenty of stock still being delivered as normal, so I didn't (though possibly had extra chocolate fall into my basket).

"The Centers for Disease Control have dropped the ball on this one.
Really the level of testing in the United States for such an advanced sophisticated country is just, just appaling. It's unacceptable.
... pity about the delay"
I respectfully disagree. The CDC lost the pandemic response team, had positions frozen and lost funding. Who can do a job in that situation?

Good afternoon everyone.

I am so behind, approx 1.5 threads and three days worth of press conferences, but wanted to come here to say I just finished Monday’s WHO Presser and, as usual, wow just wow. Again, I just can not say enough how absolutely brilliant Doc T and Dr. Mike are, imo.

While we get the transcripts of the Director General’s opening remarks posted on the WHO website, there is soooo much covered in the Q and A portions of these PCs which is not transcribed, unfortunately. While I’d like to comment on some specifics of Monday’s PC, I will refrain, considering I’m very behind and this is such a rapidly evolving situation, but wow, Dr. Mike and Dr. Tedros tell it how it is. Their intellect and experience is of the highest degree, and I just can’t say enough how much respect I have for them. There were a couple a statements they made in the last quarter of the conference where I was literally smiling with admiration and at one point I literally laughed out loud like “Yes, tell it like it is!”

—-

At one point Dr. Mike actually addressed what I had “wondered” about in my most recent “random musing” last night when I was pondering the aspect of the transparency, or lack thereof, of certain nations. Dr. Mike basically said that there IS transparency, so I foolishly retract any insinuations I may have made, at least for now, specifically re: Japan.

As always, I look forward to catching up here.

As for the tests... i can give you my own experience as i am currently 'sort of' going thru it.
Cruised for 10 days, home on Jan 29th. Next day.. cough. My 'group' on the cruise had over 100 and over 1/3 were sick enough to go to urgent care etc. I don't go until i'm beyond sick. I know to take Amoxacillin when my lungs get too bad, vaporizer, humidifier, vicks... all the tricks. Its been 4 weeks... still hacking so bad i can't breathe, can't sleep, just generally feel like crap.
Never thinking it could be CVOD19, .... UNTIL a case shows up a mile from my house. I had already scheduled dr. appt. to get a refill on cough meds. He puts me on Levaquin.. STRONG antibiotic, lots of possible side effects. I have all the 'identifying' symptoms. Fever, Hacking cough, Severe bronchitis, very slight pneumonia sounds in one lung lower lobe. Do i need a hospital. Not in my mind. What would they do? Hydrate and antibiotics and respirator or breathing treatments. I can do all at home except if it gets back enough to need a respirator. They are NOT doing CVOD 19 tests unless you have had DIRECT contact with someone positive or are already hospitalized. They are treating with Antibiotics since the VIRAL strain creates a bacterial infection in the lungs. I am self isolating because i don't want to keep being reinfected or chance other strains of 'something'. Will i pay out of pocket (i have a 5k deductable) for a test, NO. I live alone, can work from home, and will have things delivered. I just want to feel better. Its 'almost gone away' a few times then comes right back. I'm not one to panic or stress about medical stuff. I do have a chronic issues, am considered 'senior' at 55 although i can't relate to that word. Should i be tested? probably. But our Health Dept doesn't seem to do that YET, unless you are positive you were around someone that is positive. Since they don't put out names, how are you supposed to know? They just say to stay home for 14 days. Heck, i could have carried it home from the ship WITH me and passed it along. If i'm getting the lack of answers or concern, i'm sure many others in my position are getting the same. THIS is why it will keep spreading so quickly.

I read today that there was a cruise, I think SF to Mexico, but I could be very wrong, and it was ages ago, but they just found out that two people on it had the Covid-19?

It was another Princess cruise, iirc?

WeWork said one of its midtown New York City locations got "enhanced cleaning" after a company in the coworking space reported employees may have been exposed to someone who is believed to have coronavirus.

An employee of a company "may have had exposure to someone who is believed to have contracted Coronavirus." This person exited the building immediately and will self-quarantine at home for 14 days."

WeWork immediately informed other members at the location. The building then received "enhanced cleaning overnight" and remains open.

The member has been identified as an employee of the financial organization Teachers, Insurance and Annuity Association, or TIAA.

ugh. My daughter uses this type of co-working space in Manhattan.
WeWork are great locations. If anything, they are likely cleaner than a regular office because they need to stay attractive and clean for people to use them. Seems like they are taking the situation seriously. I wouldn't be surprised to see hand sanitizers, wipes, etc. available for people that use the spaces after this. (I also have meetings in them and have always been pleased with the service there.)

Doctor said masks absolutely do nothing. Not even the N95. She said the droplets are too small.

She told me no non-essential travel for me. Damn.

She also told me she doesn’t know if asthmatics can survive it because they don’t know enough yet. She told me that the best bet is to get medical attention quickly if I feel sick. She also doesn’t know if Kaiser will have enough respirators and stuff if there’s a huge influx.

But she said no need to stock up on medications. Just make sure I have my one month supply.
That's scary, I also suffer from asthma :(

Princess Cruises: Grand Princess Updates & Health Advisory - Notices & Advisories

“Grand Princess Health Advisory
Updated March 4, 2020
Last night / early this morning, our chief medical officer Dr. Grant Tarling issued this Health Advisory Letter to guests and crew currently sailing onboard Grand Princess. A similar notification has been emailed to guests who sailed on the previous voyage. For guests who sailed on the previous Grand Princess voyage (Feb 11-21), if you have experienced any symptoms of acute respiratory illness with fever, chills, or cough since your return home, please immediately contact your medical provider. You can also view the COVID-19 information card (PDF) provided by the CDC.

Guests Health Advisory – Coronavirus
March 4, 2020

Dear Princess Guest:

I wish to advise you that today we have been notified by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that they are investigating a small cluster of COVID-19 (coronavirus) cases in Northern California connected to our previous Grand Princess voyage that sailed roundtrip San Francisco from February 11 to February 21. We are working closely with our CDC partners and are following their recommendations.

For those guests who sailed with us on our previous voyage and may have been exposed, in an abundance of caution, the CDC requires you to remain in your stateroom until you have been contacted and cleared by our medical staff. A member of our medical team will be calling you between the hours of 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM this morning. You may order room service while you wait for the medical screening to be completed, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Please be assured that the health, safety, and well-being of all guests and crew are our absolute priority. The CDC is continuing to actively collect information and has set up a meeting with us this morning to determine what, if any, actions need to be taken during this cruise and on arrival in San Francisco. We have shared essential travel and health data with the CDC to facilitate their standard notification to the State and County health authorities to follow up with individuals who may have been exposed to people who became ill.

As we anticipate that further review of the situation will be necessary on arrival in San Francisco, we will be cancelling the call to Ensenada on Thursday, March 5, in order to sail directly to San Francisco and arrive on Thursday afternoon. We will keep you updated with information as we finalize plans. To assist you in contacting your family, we are providing free internet and phone service. We will advise you if the need arises to make changes to your onward travel plans post-cruise.

COVID-19 causes mild illness in about 80% of cases, typically with symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath, like the common cold or flu. About 20% of people develop more severe symptoms. The more severe symptoms typically occur in more susceptible individuals that have higher risk factors, such as older adults and those with chronic medical conditions, as it does with regular flu. The illness is mainly spread by droplets from close person-to-person contact. It is possible for the virus to spread by hand touch surfaces, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. Updated information on the illness can be found at the CDC website.

As with all respiratory illnesses, particularly during cold and flu season, you can take steps to reduce your risk of illness:

  1. Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  2. Supplement hand washing by regularly using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  3. Avoid close contact with people suffering from respiratory illness.
  4. Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze using a tissue or your bent elbow.
  5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
We are closely recording and monitoring all persons who have reported to the medical center with cold and flu symptoms during the voyage. As a precaution, we are also conducting additional enhanced environmental disinfection onboard in addition to our regular stringent cleaning and sanitation protocols.

If you have experienced any symptoms of acute respiratory illness with fever, chills, or cough at any time during this cruise, and you have not already consulted with the medical staff, please immediately contact the Medical Center to report your illness. There will not be a charge for this service.

Thank you for taking the time to read this important information.

To access complimentary internet, turn on your Wi-Fi and access the “ocean” network for connection.

Yours in health,

Grant Tarling, MD, MPH
Chief Medical Officer”

"This is serious. I’m currently digging a moat around my house and filling it with Purell."

gotta find my shovel....

as for the new cases in LA County, very worrisome with such a high percentage of homeless people.
Yes, I'm concerned about the homeless people. A virus would whip through a community, many of whom may not reach out (or be able to reach out) for medical help.

Very worrisome.

Four more cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the west of Ireland, bringing the total number of cases on the island of Ireland to nine.

The patients, two male and two female, are all associated with travel from the same affected area in northern Italy.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer with the Department of Health, said: "Tonight we can confirm there are now six cases of COVID-19 in Ireland. Contact tracing is underway for these four new cases."

Earlier two cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Northern Ireland, bringing the total there to three.

I can easily see Seattle becoming "Wuhan" in less than a month. Or worse.

Hand sanitizer, washing hands, staying home when you are sick is basically pablum offered for the masses. If you get it, just hope that you can ride it out.

"May the odds be in your favor."

Just got back from my doctor's office because my blood pressure has gone up (gee don't know why, doc, duh) and my doctor said she was on the 'local corona virus council). Annd then really just gave me the usual pablum about how 'most people will come out of this just fine' and 'we don't really anticipate any drug shortages' and other assorted 'don't worry' crap. I personally think she and the other doctors are saying this stuff to alieve there own fears...guess in other words we're all on our own.
