1/n The reason why we knew early about Seattle outbreak of #coronavirus was because of sentinel surveillance work by independent scientists. Such surveillance never got totally underway in other cities. So other U.S. hot spots may not be fully detected yet The race to unravel the United States’ biggest coronavirus outbreak

Scott Gottlieb, MD on Twitter

2/n The original goal was to implement sentinel surveillance in 5 cities to detect early spread. It was announced in testimony before Senate by HHS. It was expanded to also include Honolulu. Idea was to test indeterminate cases of flu like illness to see if it was #coronavirus.

3/n It was delayed by lack of diagnostic capability to test samples. When it was finally implemented, samples had to be sent to CDC lab which had limited capacity, meaning the surveillance effort was small. It was not expanded beyond original six cities.

Canada funds development of COVID-19 'lab-in-a-box'
OTTAWA -- Canadian researchers are developing a "lab-in-a-box" that could make it cheaper and faster to diagnose cases of the novel coronavirus, particularly in remote areas of the world.
The project received $1 million from the International Development Research Centre as part of the $27 million in coronavirus research the federal government announced Friday
The technology being developed by Keith Pardee, an assistant professor of pharmacy at the University of Toronto, aims to make it possible for people in remote areas to test for the virus very quickly. Xinyu Liu, an associate professor of engineering at the university, is working to make the test portable.

The ultimate goal is to create a kit that would fit into a container about twice the size of a standard moving box, which would contain the diagnostics and hardware to perform 14,000 COVID-19 tests''.

The only map I can find that I think is doing a fairly good job of covering the cases for all of US is the BNO map. Link below. They are a little late lately with some of the new states reporting in the US because they wait to get official state figures, but usually within a day or so they seem to catch up.

You can zoom in and out, and also drag the map left and right. Then if you click on a DOT, it gives latest information for that area.

You may already be familiar with this map as we have shared it a lot when this started in China.

ETA - I am also including another site link "Worldometer" below that one that doesnt have a map for US but does have some good information for the world cases everywhere.

Both those iirc are on the resources/media no discussion thread, I'm also adding this one there as it has visuals and keeps only US and Canada information drilled down. As now in US, I like this one.

David and Sally Abel, the British couple, diagnosed with coronavirus on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship, remain unable to return to the UK after their latest test came back positive.

They taken to a Japanese hospital from the cruise liner after spending almost two weeks in quarantine in their cabin on board following a positive diagnosis of both the virus and pneumonia.

In order to leave the hospital, both need three negative test results. Both had been tested twice previously - and the result had been negative - but during the most recent and final test David Abel’s response came back positive.

The number of known coronavirus cases in the United States continues to grow. As of Saturday morning, at least 308 people with the Covid-19 illness have been treated in 28 states, according to a New York Times database, and at least 17 patients with the virus have died.

Health officials in Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota and Oklahoma reported their first coronavirus cases on Friday.

Confirmed cases in the Netherlands have risen by 60 to 188, health officials have said after the country reported its first fatal case on Friday.

The National Institute for Public Health said that most of the cases could be traced back to people who had recently travelled, mostly from northern Italy. In 29 cases, the path of infection was still being investigated.

Elsewhere, in New South Wales, Australia, two more people have tested positive – bringing the day’s number to eight and the state’s total to 36 cases.

The two new cases are a man in his 60s who recently returned from Italy and a second man in his 40s who is a known close contact of a previously confirmed case.

Around 70 people were left trapped after a hotel used to quarantine people who have had recent contact with coronavirus patients collapsed in China’s eastern Fujian province, officials said.

Xinjia Hotel collapsed around 7.30pm local time (11.30 GMT) and around 23 people had been rescued by 9pm, according to a Quanzhou city government statement reported by AFP.

The 80-room hotel was recently converted to a quarantine facility for people who had recent contact with coronavirus patients, the People’s Daily state newspaper reported. State news agency Xinhua said rescue efforts were ongoing.

I really hope everyone can be rescued ASAP.

From the link:

"Vice President Mike Pence told reporters on Friday that 21 people tested positive for the coronavirus on the Grand Princess cruise ship docked off the California coast—but no one told the patients they had COVID-19 before the announcement. According to CNN, an audio broadcast was made on the ship shortly after Pence talked about the number of infected. “We apologize, but we were not given advance notice of this announcement by the U.S. federal government,” the announcement said..."

I won't clutter the thread with any comment about the importance of competently coordinating information.

I mentioned many threads ago that the accuracy and timeliness of information from government officials was my primary concern as our nation deals with COVID-19 (and voted as such in the poll). I remain concerned about the accuracy and timeliness of information that is being disseminated. I understand the urge to withhold details so as not to cause alarm or confusion, but the American people have a right to know how COVID-19 is spreading nationally, statewide, and in their local communities. I hope the task force is making every effort to keep the American people well-informed without causing undue fear and panic.

Coronavirus latest news: Almost half of passengers tested on US cruise ship are infected

Apologies if already posted.

So I’m back from “toilet paper and bleach shopping” and thankfully was able to get a large supply so I don’t need to worry about it anymore. I can have some peace knowing I don’t have to deal with crowds and sick people just to go get toilet paper and can wipe my bum for the next couple months and keep the house clean. (Last night’s discussions about Brillo pads and sponges got me a little worried lol, along with seeing the recent article out of Burbank re: the Costco lines and other articles about TP so I was motivated to just get this over and done with. It’s not like TP is going to waste, you will always need it.

Anyway, it was hell out there today, but not for the reasons you would think, such as long lines or short supplies.

Once again, I was the only one in the store “CV shopping”, and with rubber gloves on might I add.

In a nutshell, I got a bunch of stares and whispers and was literally mocked by the clerk who said “it’s only the flu” and “we’re all going to die sometime”. (Eta: I schooled her btw that I am more worried about my family member with cancer that has been undergoing chemotherapy. That shut her up real fast.)

The lady in front of me in line AND the man behind me also both had negative things to say. It was offensive. It was not cool. I almost started doubting myself it was so bad.

I’m sure after reading here I’ll get right back in my groove that I am not overreacting and am being prepared.

Anyway glad to be home and back with you guys. I heard so much BS and misinformation today, conspiracy theories, “it’s the government”, “it’s all the media”...

Remember that Saturday Night Live skit with Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtain on "count/counterpoint" wayyyy back where the banter went back and forth.

There was the quote "Jane, you ignorant sl*t". That's what I feel like yelling to my computer during some live streams and even listening to/conversing with my friends who think I'm nuts and overreacting and panicking! (NOT here at WS on this thread though as this place is my only salvation)

Was going to do a YouTube link of the skit, but thought better and don't want to go to camp and learn a musical instrument iykwim. You older folks will remember that skit I'm sure.
