I mentioned many threads ago that the accuracy and timeliness of information from government officials was my primary concern as our nation deals with COVID-19 (and voted as such in the poll). I remain concerned about the accuracy and timeliness of information that is being disseminated. I understand the urge to withhold details so as not to cause alarm or confusion, but the American people have a right to know how COVID-19 is spreading nationally, statewide, and in their local communities. I hope the task force is making every effort to keep the American people well-informed without causing undue fear and panic.

Apparently getting tested in Indiana is still an issue.... This is from a local news channel:

I had a very intense discussion with my SIL this morning about her upcoming cruise. I told her I needed her to not see my parents for at least 14 days after she returns. That means my brother, who is not going on the cruise but who will be exposed to her afterwards, also cannot see them for that period. I also said I’m not wild about my brother potentially being exposed, either, but there’s nothing I can do about that.

She still believes it’s like the flu and the risk is low. But if my parents get it, they are done for, given their ages and pre-existing conditions. She agreed to stay away from them. But it was not a happy discussion. I feel bad about that, but part of my job is to protect my parents.
Good for you.
My ex FIL was talked into taking a trip from Ct. to Fl. during regular flu season , FIL caught the flu on the trip, needed to be hospitalized, got pneumonia and died. 80's, reasonably good health. So it does happen.

We stocked up on the boxed almond milk we use in our breakfast shakes.

Organic milk and UHT treated milk have very long outdates, too.

I just bought a 24-pack carton on Horizon organic milk in 8 oz size that outdates July 21 2020 and DOES NOT HAVE TO BE REFRIGERATED !!!!!
Costco has it on a pallet along the wall near where all the bottled drinks are. Also bought a flat of evaporated milk. One must have milk for the morning coffe, quarantine or no quarantine!

The oat milk I bought outdates April 28 and has to be refrigerated. Refrigerator and freezer space is at a premium in this quarantine prep stuff and I have to be selective about how much "milk" is in there.

So it all depends on how the milk is treated after collection. UHT milk is very common in the South Pacific where refrigeration is not always available or in little stores in places where milk drinking is not that common

I’m really hoping that’s not the case, but, unfortunately, I‘ve not seen any plans or actions so far to rule that possibility out.

I’ve really been disappointed in the US response so far. It appears that repeated warnings were ignored, and short of arrogance, I can’t understand why the CDC has been so adamant that their test kits were the only ones to be used. There may be more to the story that we’re not aware of, but from where I stand, it appears the CDC shot themselves in the foot over pride. A window of opportunity has been missed that can’t be recovered - we won’t get a “re-do” - there’s no reset button...

I will say that I still have faith that the US has the CAPABILITY to turn things around in a big hurry, if they get focused and actually give appropriate weight to the severity of the situation at hand. Historically speaking, this isn’t the first time the US has been caught off guard. The biggest difference is that this time there were warning alarms that were CHOSEN to be ignored. Denial?? I don’t know.... can’t explain it... no excuse for it....

The clock is ticking however, and time is of the utmost importance. I truly hope our government will respond with a sense of redemption.

I think the recent purchase of the hotel that’s to be converted for isolation was the first really good step taken in response (think it was Washington?) - but even that was reactionary.

IMO, for what it’s worth, the US should continue the fight for containment. I don’t think containment is realistic, but that fight needs to continue in order to buy the time needed to put appropriate response measures in place. Get every city, every town, prepared to receive the wave.

WE CAN NOT MISS ANY ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO MITIGATE THE OUTCOME AND TO BUY EVERY SECOND OF TIME THAT WE CAN!!!

The world needs to approach this virus as though we are at war. We need not only medical response plans in place, but we need solid battle plans. @Amonet summed it up best for me with one word - we need BALANCE !!

We need to respond with equal measure of offense and defense. It will require a simultaneous balance of both to prevail.

“Balance” is going to be needed every step of the way, and at every level. From the frontline’s war against this virus, all the way down to finding balance within ourselves. We all need to stay vigilant, but we need to approach the issue with caution and compassion rather than panic and fear.

I truly believe history will judge our level of victory or defect based on the level of unity and compassion with which we respond.

I wonder how our US soldiers at Camp Humphreys in South Korea are doing, if there have been any more transmissions.

ETA:
South Korean worker at Camp Humphreys infected with new coronavirus, raising USFK total to seven
March 6, 2020

“The announcement raised to seven the number of people affiliated with U.S. Forces Korea who have been infected, including a soldier and his wife.

However, the other six were connected to bases in the southeastern area of Daegu, which is the epicenter of the outbreak that began in mid-February and has led to more than 6,000 infections nationwide.”

Cruise ships taken off course as anti-virus controls widen
BEIJING – The spreading new virus -- or fears of it -- immobilized cruise ships or left them searching for ports on four continents Saturday as the bug that has infected more than 100,000 people shifted its travel patterns.

Iran declared a “sacred jihad” against the virus after its case numbers spiked anew. Italy shut down its courts, and the Vatican decided to livestream the pope's Sunday blessing. Cruise ships faced trouble in waters of the United States, Malaysia, Egypt and Malta as those aboard got tested or confined to cabins.

In China, the number of people recovering from COVID-19 mounted. But hopeful signs had not erased the scope of the recent crisis in the country where the new virus emerged late last year...

Travel note:

Amtrak’s is canceling its Acela nonstop service between Washington and New York amid the global coronavirus outbreak that has hurt travel demand.

“We are closely monitoring the coronavirus and are taking action based on guidance from public health experts,” the company said.

The nonstop Acela service, which launched last fall, will be suspended starting Tuesday through May 26. The company cited reduced demand for train service as concerns rise about the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country. Amtrak anticipates other train schedule changes, including removing train cars or canceling trains when there are other alternatives for customers.

GEORGIA
3 new cases....Cobb, Fulton, and Gwinnett counties

One individual is from Cobb County after recently returning from Italy and is isolated at home. The second individual is from Fulton County and is hospitalized. The source of this individual’s exposure is unclear at this time.

In addition, the state Department of Health is awaiting confirmation on a presumptive positive test for coronavirus on a resident of Gwinnett County.

I thought the saying was "Fool me once, shame on you (for tricking me), fool me twice, shame on me (for being dumb enough to fall for it twice)." Either way, point taken.

There's so much controversy about the origin of the viruses. There's one theory about escape from the level 4 bio-lab 3 blocks from the Wuhan wet-market. The same theory also surrounds the SARS virus. It's strange that this virus is related to SARS and AIDS. Very odd that those two diseases would bind to make a new virus. AIDS is from monkeys, SARS is from bats. How did monkeys and bats get together to make a superbug? The bat bit the monkey, someone ate the monkey?

It’s not related to AIDS. They said it sort of acts like AIDS.

My friend who is a nurse in the Seattle area thinks so. Or so it seems.

She’s feels it will be mostly over in a couple months. From her lips to God’s ears.
Possible, but not likely, without draconian measures. We can't even isolate the few now who are going to parties and to the mall....much less millions.

We can still hope she is right....

As of last night we have 2 cases now in South Carolina, the one mentioned above and an elderly woman in Kershaw County, which is a county next door to mine. I work in a large church office and no one I know, except DH, is concerned about this virus. Our local Walmart is fully stocked (as of yesterday morning anyway). I've been stocking up on stuff all week long - nonperishable foods, frozen entrees and veggies, cat food, OTC meds, toilet paper (currently have about 100 rolls, lol), and even diapers and formula for my special needs grandbaby. DH got out the Foodsaver and vacuum sealed 10 one pound packs of ground beef to add to what's already in the freezer. I'm still worried it's not enough.

Every one I talk to thinks I'm over-reacting. In fact, I asked one of the pastors and a deacon if they've considered not doing the hand-shake greeting during welcome time on Sunday morning. The deacon laughed and said, "only the crazies are worried about that!" And this man is a late 70s diabetic, a prime candidate for the virus! Unbelievable.

Maybe this case in Kershaw County will wake some people up! It's only a matter of time before it crosses that county line and, boom, it's right here amongst us (if not already)!!

NOTE: He's not covering COVID today, perhaps pulling an old overview of infections and taking the weekend off as is WHO. Just an FYI.

Also, Dr. Sh.... didn't do one yesterday.. he was AWOL?

Although 3 residents had flu-like symptoms after #Egypt trip, not tested for the virus for nearly 2 weeks, because at the time of their return, @CDCgov recommended tests only for people traveling in China
