The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.

There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.

New Chinese virus 'will have infected hundreds'

Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.

Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.

But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

Experts say the fact three Chinese tourists have tested positive for the virus outside Wuhan indicates the disease toll may be higher than reported.

Is there a current, accurate map of effected states?

The only map I can find that I think is doing a fairly good job of covering the cases for all of US is the BNO map. Link below. They are a little late lately with some of the new states reporting in the US because they wait to get official state figures, but usually within a day or so they seem to catch up.

You can zoom in and out, and also drag the map left and right. Then if you click on a DOT, it gives latest information for that area.

You may already be familiar with this map as we have shared it a lot when this started in China.

ETA - I am also including another site link "Worldometer" below that one that doesnt have a map for US but does have some good information for the world cases everywhere.

Oh, and just found out on this link below, if you scroll past the international figures, at the bottom of that long list, you can click on USA and if you scroll up after clicking USA, it gives totals for each city.

Again, they sometimes are a little late like a day or so to catch up with the breaking state news, but they usually get them pretty close and fairly quickly for US.

Italy 'to suspend mortgage payments'

Reuters is reporting that mortgage payments are to be suspended across Italy, as part of Rome’s measures to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.

That would help families cope with the economic cost of the quarantine measures being imposed, which will hurt some sectors such as retail and tourism.

That sounds absolutely horrifying, but Italy reportedly only has 9,000 cases. Are their hospitals really have such small capacity that they are not even treating a lot of these patients?
Attached was the capacity of ICU beds in European countries in 2012. The source said that there are actually fewer now.

"AHA data: According to the AHA 2015 annual survey, the United States had 4862 acute care registered hospitals; 2814 of these had at least 10 acute care beds and at least 1 ICU bed. These hospitals had a total of 540,668 staffed beds and 94,837 ICU beds (14.3% ICU beds/total beds) in 5229 ICUs."

So only 94,837 ICU beds in all of the US. We know these are mostly full at all times. To say is strongly, we are screwed.

As countries around the world take increasingly drastic measures to slow the coronavirus outbreak, a new study has found the disease can travel twice as far as the official “safe distance” on public transport.

The research, completed by a team of Chinese government epidemiologists, found that a passenger – unaware that they had coronavirus – infected up to 13 other people travelling on the same bus in a matter of hours.

The virus that causes COVID-19 can linger in the air for at least 30 minutes and travel up to 4.5m – further than the distance people have been advised to keep from each other by health authorities around the world.

“It can be confirmed that in a closed environment with airconditioning, the transmission distance of the new coronavirus will exceed the commonly recognised safe distance,” the researchers wrote in a paper published in Practical Preventive Medicine last Friday.

Chinese state media has released several photographs of President Xi Jinping visiting Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan -- one of the emergency facilities built in a matter of days to handle the influx of patients at the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. Yep, wearing a mask. And we are being told masks won't help. Give me a break. If you don't have enough masks, so just say so, instead of claiming they won't help.

SHANGHAI, March 10 (Reuters) - China's Hubei province is studying plans to allow people in areas at a medium- or low-risk of contracting the coronavirus to start traveling, state media reported on Tuesday, citing a meeting chaired by the province's party chief Ying Yong.

Reuters: The meeting, reported by the official Hubei Daily, said that they may allow people to start traveling by using a "health code", a mobile-based monitoring system that has been rolled out by many local authorities in China in recent weeks.

Reuters: Hubei province and its capital Wuhan are at the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak in China.
