The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.

There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.

New Chinese virus 'will have infected hundreds'

Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.

Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.

But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

Experts say the fact three Chinese tourists have tested positive for the virus outside Wuhan indicates the disease toll may be higher than reported.

(ETA: Like we in here don’t already know this by now. It’s people who don’t read here that need to know about this moo)

Prevention
There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this disease. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
    • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
    • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
For information about handwashing, see CDC’s Handwashing website

For information specific to healthcare, see CDC’s Hand Hygiene in Healthcare Settings

These are everyday habits that can help prevent the spread of several viruses. CDC does have specific guidance for travelers.”

Japan issues coronavirus medical guidance as infections rise

KYODO NEWS - 11 hours ago - 22:34 | All, World, Japan

Japan's health ministry issued guidance Monday for when people with symptoms consistent with the new coronavirus should consult medical institutions, as the country steps up efforts to contain its spread with more cases, even among medical staff, confirmed.

The ministry is now encouraging people who have had a temperature of 37.5 C or higher for four days, are feeling lethargic or are experiencing shortness of breath to contact by phone nationwide health-care centers in charge of responding to the outbreak.

The centers will then recommend medical institutions they should visit. The period is shorter at two days for the elderly and those with underlying conditions such as diabetes, as they are viewed as more vulnerable to the pneumonia-causing virus, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said.

Japan is scrambling to strengthen its virus testing capabilities with its immediate target of 3,000 tests a day and increase medical facilities across the nation to treat infected people.

Raising public concerns, the number of cases despite no recent record of coming into contact with people from virus-stricken regions in China or without symptoms has been increasing.

The health ministry said its official in his 50s who worked as a liaison on the vessel has been hospitalized after testing positive for the virus, in the latest case of infection among medical and other staffers.

That goes to the fact that when taken off the ship, the latest folks are being driven 4 hours to hospitals. They don't want the epicenter of Yokohama and Tokoyo to be overwhelmed by the passengers - they want to save the local hospitals in major metro areas for their potential patients MOO

There is no way MOO that Japan is gonna let out 2,000 folks from their ship to roam in Yokohama or Tokoyo etc. The cruise line may ? let them disembark in 2 days, but MOO it will be straight into the hands for isolation somewhere by the Japanese government. MOO. As Dr. Spock would say, that is illogical that they would release them with all the positives coming off that ship daily in the past couple of days.

I’m way behind.... been traveling (not a fun experience all things CV considered!). Will hopefully catch up on the thread soon.

I was THE only person wearing a mask in the airport. Not one other soul. Lots of stares and several comments that I overheard. I was very self-conscience. Oh well.

I keep thinking maybe I’m way overreacting, but then I keep doing the research and I just can’t figure out why no one at the airports seemed to care. Meanwhile, hand sanitizer and face masks are sold out? I don’t know, it’s all kind of weird to me.

Off to catch up...

Health hotlines in Japan flooded with coronavirus test requests

As the new coronavirus threatens to spread through Japan, hotlines for virus-related consultations are being flooded with requests from concerned people who want to be tested.

While some government authorities have taken steps to handle the situation, including by adding telephone capacity, others are expected to struggle with the growing number of inquiries.

A public health center in the city of Wakayama, the prefectural capital, had been receiving an average of 10 requests a day for consultations in relation to the virus since late January.

On Friday, however, the center received 46 requests in just the first hour the hotline was open.

The city hastily increased the number of phone lines from four to 10 to handle the influx.

Many calls were from citizens voicing concerns about the spread of the virus and how to get tested.

At present, virus tests are granted only to those meeting certain conditions, such as individuals who recently visited China’s Hubei Province or had close contact with people with such travel histories.

A Yokohama government official said that the city did not have enough “test kits to remove the worries of people displaying symptoms.

The official highlighted the need for simple test kits, like those that are available for influenza.

The health ministry and prefectural governments also operate hotlines.

Quarantine surveillance enhanced
February 12, 2020 -
The Hong Kong SAR Government is enhancing surveillance (Feb 12) of people under the compulsory quarantine orders issued by the Department of Health (DH).

The DH and Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) will continue to make surprise phone calls and video calls and request real-time locations to the persons under quarantine. If those under quarantine fail to share their real-time locations via their mobile devices, they will be immediately requested to wear electronic wristbands so that the DH can monitor them.

The Government is also strengthening manpower to assist the DH and the OGCIO in this joint effort to combat the novel coronavirus. The Government reiterated the importance of self-discipline by people under quarantine, urging them to strictly comply with the quarantine orders. Details here.

Anyone who breaches the compulsory quarantine is subject to a fine of US$3,205 and imprisonment for six months.

But it seems like those are elderly?

All reports are saying yes, more risk the older you are. More vulnerable population, so yes. Per WHO Director at the daily media update

"why is seems to be affecting older people and bias towards men in China...A. I think that any respiratory pathogen certainly is seen and expected to appear more in elderly and COPD as at very high risk of viral infection AND secondary bacterial infections (sequela)"

“Aahhhhh ….!” Mark Jorgensen wrote on Facebook, where he shared footage of the suite at Travis Air Force Base after arriving from Yokohama, where the couple had been on the Diamond Princess. “It’s actually quite amazing. It’s like a hotel, basically. I don’t know what I’m going to do with three beds. … It’s just me,” he says, adding a less-than-enthusiastic “Yay” at the start of his 14 days in quarantine.
e told ABC News on Monday that it had taken three hours for the hundreds of passengers to disembark the Princess Diamond and climb aboard nine buses.
Aboard the Boeing 747 charter flight, the crew members were clad in full protective suits and all the passengers wore face masks, Mark told the network.
“The logistics of putting this together have got to be enormous,” he wrote in one of his Facebook posts.

14 Americans evacuated from cruise ship in Japan test positive for novel coronavirus

...more than 300 Americans who were passengers aboard a cruise ship quarantined at sea in Japan over coronavirus infections have evacuated the country on two flights chartered by the U.S. government, officials said. Roughly 60 Americans, some who were hospitalized and others who opted to stay on the ship, remain in Japan.

The first charter flight landed at Travis Air Force Base in California early Monday morning. Upon arrival at Travis Air Force Base, seven individuals, including four who'd tested positive for the virus, were hospitalized near Travis. (e.d. 50 miles NE of San Fran CA) Three other individuals who tested positive, along with their spouses -- six people in total -- were transferred to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

When the Lackland Air Force Base flight landed,(e.d. San Antonio TX area) seven individuals who had tested positive for novel coronavirus were additionally flown to Omaha. The 13 individuals who were sent to Omaha will be quarantined for the next 14 days and are being re-tested for COVID-19, UNMC health experts said at a Monday news conference.

Princess Cruises, which operates the ship, announced in a statement Sunday that it will cancel all Diamond Princess voyages through April 20.....Prior to the arrival of the Americans from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, there were 15 reported cases in the United States, according to the WHO. The patients are in Arizona, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin. All but two of the U.S. cases are linked to travel to Wuhan, China.

ETA: In another post I said that Omaha was also headquarters for Kalitta Air...duh duh no it's not. Their base is Michigan. Sorry to the poster above as to my error/brain dead when they stated both planes went to Omaha I was thinking also home to the airlines.

Jeri Goldman speaks from Omaha Nebraska. She is in quarantine, her husband Carl is hospitalized at UNMC. Unbelievable, she says on the video she made up the story that they were clear and were free of the virus, when she knew they hadn't confirmation of it. "We made up the story that no news is good news"! He developed a fever on the plane. She also sounded angry that they found out that they allowed 14 people on her flight that had tested positive for the virus. Now she is complaining that she doesn't have her luggage for a change of clothes and she is stuck in a dormitory style room and can't leave! So IMO she would lie to get on the plane, yet she is unhappy others were allowed on. SMH

I am half way through. So far, I think that this is another FAKE news propaganda movie put out by the Chinese government. They truly have zero qualms about falsehoods.

Medical staff giving their cell phone numbers to people who are not sick and telling them to call anytime? ROFLMAO.
Showing up at the door saying we heard someone is sick, let us gear up and transport you to a hospital.
Exactly as we have done for another 79,000.00 patients.

While we're at it. Let's sterilize your unit, with a team of specialists. Just like we've done with the other 79,000.00 patients.

The crews needed to do this sort of thing would be well over 700,000.00 people. 10 people per unit at least!

Suspected Coronavirus 2019"

..." proper use, storage, and disposal of personal protective equipment (PPE). Wrong use or handling of PPE can increase the spread of the disease" ... crew members need anual fit testing to wear

As an owner of 4 different restaurants in Southern California, I can attest to the strict guidelines and inspections of the food inspectors here. We have carried an "A" for excellent in everyone of our restaurants, expect once, when our head cook got into it with an inspector, pissed her off greatly, and we got a "C". **I made sure that lasted only 24 hours until we were back to an "A".
As annoying as they are (why oh why do they show up when we're busy busy?), I have a new found respect for them.
With that said. This virus's origination has not been pin-pointed, but, could have come from the sloppy slaughter of animals in one of China's wet markets.
I've read about these markets, if your stomach can handle it, you may want to read about them too.
Barbaric.
The assorted animals, the killings, the pilling up of the dead bodies, the lack of sanitation, the lack of refridgeration, I could go on and on.
How many people need to die, before China figures this out?
I am taking a wild *advertiser censored* guess here,
I bet China's tourism business is dead. Absolutely dead. I'll bet that people are cancelling their trips as I've been writing this.
**Maybe, it's their own damn fault?
