US coronavirus: New York's latest vaccine mandate begins Monday as Omicron spreads - CNN

(CNN)As the Omicron coronavirus variant spreads across the country, more events are being canceled or postponed, airlines and cruise lines are scrambling to deal with last-minute changes, and New York City's vaccine mandate for the private sector is set to go into effect Monday.

The updated rules require workers to have at least one vaccination dose by Monday and will not allow employees to opt out of vaccination through regular testing.
Children ages 5-11 in New York are now also required to show proof of at least one shot before being allowed access to indoor dining, fitness or entertainment, and adults will be required to show proof of two vaccinations for those areas.

I cannot imagine how difficult it would be for already stretched thin restaurant folks to enforce. Now, to be fair my 2 kids from NY are here for Christmas and they are shocked at Michigan and our lack of any COVID control. We ate at a popular non chain bar/restaurant here in metro Detroit and there was not a mask in the restaurant, tables and bar stools all full and not spaced and no vaccine needed. This is as true for the three places we went this past week. My son said he felt he stepped onto a different planet! I asked him if it was hard for staff to enforce all of the mandates and mask rules. He said “no, people for the most part abide and understand”. NY has a different mindset I guess.
Mr Pirate and I are fully vaccinated and boosted. We eat out and have attended large sporting events. The vaccine status if others does not affect our choices. I am sorry they choose not to vaccinate and hope they stay healthy. I feel we will all get this virus eventually.

EXPLAINER: New easy-to-use COVID-19 pills come with a catch | AP News

Newly infected COVID-19 patients have two new treatment options that can be taken at home.

But that convenience comes with a catch: The pills have to be taken as soon as possible once symptoms appear.

The challenge is getting tested, getting a prescription and starting the pills in a short window.

The antiviral pills aren’t for everyone who gets a positive test. The pills are intended for those with mild or moderate COVID-19 who are more likely to become seriously ill. That includes older people and those with other health conditions like heart disease, cancer or diabetes that make them more vulnerable.

You’ll need a prescription first from a doctor or other authorized health worker. The U.S. government is buying the pills from Merck and Pfizer and providing them for free, but supplies will be limited initially. They’ll be shipped to states where they will be available at drugstores, community health centers and other places. Treatment lasts five days.

Some pharmacists may be able to administer a quick COVID-19 test and prescribe the pills all in one visit. They already do this in many states for flu or strep throat.

Yes, people I know and am related to have died. But not long ago, I read an article about conspiracy theorists and how it is impossible to reason with them. Presenting facts only makes them dig their heels in. So I don't attempt it anymore. If I'm at work, I inform people of the mask mandate and insist on it. But I do not engage in discussion about it. If it's family or friends I simply maintain my own boundaries, but again, I'm not bothering to engage in discussion or argument. As we've seen, they can't be reasoned with even on their deathbed.

Many are seeking attention, seeking argument, and I refuse to give them what they want. Presenting facts will not sway anyone, but it will probably raise my blood pressure and ruin my day. All I can do is protect myself and those around me as best as I can.

Yes, and that is why mandates are so essential to dealing with viral spread during a pandemic. Mandates work, where reason, bribes, coddling and anything else that we can come up with do not work.

Well, happy to report that we are out of quarantine and my kids never got it. Living in the same house with 2 Covid positive parents (who still had to cook for them) I call that nothing short of amazing. We’ve felt fine for about 6 days so being locked inside has been quite challenging as far as us going stir crazy but at least we had each other. Hope everyone has a safe and healthy new year :). As I like to say “Think positive; test negative”

My son's brother-in-law tested positive yesterday. My son and his in-laws were together Christmas Eve and Day. There were 8 altogether. The brother-in-law was at a work Christmas party, that was the only place he had been where he could have been infected, other than at his work site.

My son is waiting to get tests from his job (he works at home) which will take a couple of days. He's already feeling a few symptoms. These two guys are very close, almost joined at the hip. All of them have been vaccinated and boosted, except for the brother-in-law, who never went back for the booster shot. All 8 are in quarantine now. They haven't been tested yet, seems tests are rare there.

Glad you're feeling better and aren't in quarantine anymore.

Massive New Bird Flu Outbreak Could Be 2022’s Deadly Pandemic

Israel’s National Security Council has assumed control of a massive bird flu outbreak in the Galilee, which scientists warn could become a “mass disaster” for humans.

Over half a billion migrating birds pass through the area every year, heading for warm African winters or balmy European summers, making this a catastrophic location for a major bird flu outbreak—right at the nexus of global avian travel.

The virus can be deadly if it infects people. The World Health Organization says more than half of the confirmed 863 human cases it has tracked since 2003 proved fatal. Most strains or variants of avian flu, H5N1, are relatively difficult to transmit to people.

Yossi Leshem, one of Israel’s most renowned ornithologists, told The Daily Beast, however, that it is the ability of these viruses to mutate into new strains that poses such a threat, as we have seen with the coronavirus.

“There could be a mutation that also infects people and turns into a mass disaster,” said Leshem, a zoologist at Tel Aviv University and director of the International Center for the Study of Bird Migration at Latrun.

So far, at least 5,400 wild cranes have died infected with the new H5N1 avian flu, which Israeli authorities fear could expand into a global emergency.

The deaths of thousands of wild birds in the Hula Nature Reserve, one of the world’s premier bird sanctuaries, “is an extraordinary event with global ramifications,” warned Tel Aviv University Professor of Zoology Noga Kronfeld Shor in an interview with Reshet Bet Radio.

Shor, who is also the chief scientist at Israel’s Ministry of the Environment, noted that the carcasses of other waterbirds, such as pelicans and egrets, have already been found.

Israelis have been warned not to approach any wild bird that looks sick, and not to touch any bird droppings.

I hope you can convince her to get the jab. From what I've read, pregnancy and giving birth are so stressful on a woman's body that it leaves her with little energy left over to fight covid.

But, I understand why pregnant women are scared to take a shot they feel could affect their unborn child.

All those conspiracies going around now never should have happened. And, it's the fault of both sides. Even on this forum we see belittling of those who think differently--and not because they're trying to be mean--because they don't understand how the division grew.

I hold out very little hope we'll be able to smooth things over during this pandemic, but I sure hope we learn from what's happened and use that knowledge to develop a better plan in the future.

I know you must be worried sick about your daughter. I really hope she has a change of heart.

Thank you. Her stepmom just tested positive on Christmas morning and I pray that this might be a wake up call that she still has time to get jabbed. It will protect her and her baby boy once he is born.

Thank you. It’s been mostly tough on the kids. But we are glad to have it behind us. Sorry to hear about your family :(. It’s definitely running rampant right now. Hope they have mild symptoms!
The brother-in-law said he thought he was sick from being at the Christmas party and ate something bad or it was from drinking. It seems like it's always too late by the time you've tested and have been infected. When the symptoms didn't go away, he tested.

The governor said the first allocation will include 500,000 iHealth kits – each containing two tests for a total of one million tests – designated for the general public. The distribution of these kits and N95 masks is scheduled to begin on Thursday, Dec. 30, and is expected to run through the following week.

State officials said details of the distribution of the kits and N95 masks to the general public are still being finalized.

In addition to the kits for the general public, the state purchased another one million iHealth kits – each containing two tests for a total of two million tests – that will be distributed to K-12 schools statewide.

Distribution of those kits, which will also include a supply of N95 masks, will begin in January and continue through the school year as supplies last.

Connecticut to distribute 1M at-home rapid COVID-19 tests to general public starting Thursday

As Omicron Spreads and Cases Soar, the Unvaccinated Remain Defiant

This is behind a paywall--- I believe those entrenched in not getting vaccinated will not budge no matter what reality is-they represent a danger to us all- sorry if that statement offends anybody but it is the truth.

You're right, of course, by not getting vaccinated, they increase the risk of covid continuing to mutate, and who knows where that could lead. Nowhere good. I was wrong about this being mostly political--I just read the recent study about who was and who wasn't getting the jab, and politics don't seem to have much to do with it. Age, however, does.

This is really interesting.

Who are the vaccine holdouts? America's real COVID divide might not be what you think

What’s crazy is that that happened to my husband. We had gone to a late dinner and had a few drinks. He woke up the next day and felt like crap but he thought he was just hungover of sorts or maybe just didn’t sleep well. By 5pm he was running a fever and was down for the count. It really does come on fast and furious. One mine you’re fine and the next you’re sick. That didn’t happen to me as I was already in quarantine when my symptoms started which was very obvious to me since I had not Been drinking and I was honestly just waiting for the boom. I figured I’d he has it then I def have it. We are attached at the hip. We aren’t really sure where he picked it up. He did go to VA 3 times for work that week and he’s been going back to the gym so it’s really anyone’s guess.

Eta- even with a fever and looking like Patrick Dempsey from Outbreak he tested Negative with an at-home test. He didn’t test positive with an at home test until he’s been visibly and physically sick for 24 hours. My rapids was negative but PCR was positive. I did take an at home test a few days into my sickness (after I had felt better) and it was glaring positive while my husbands was barely there anymore). I trust an at home when it’s positive but not necessarily when it’s negative.

Definitely scary news.

I'm highlighting (BBM) below a sentence from the quote above:

Yoav Motro, a specialist in vertebrates and locusts at Israel’s Ministry of Agriculture, said that for now, H5N1 is presenting “like the opposite of COVID. Compared to COVID, the chances of [humans] catching this are very, very slight—but unlike COVID, the risks of dying from it if you do catch it are very high.
