In Denmark hospitalizations (especially ICU admissions) and deaths are low for omicron compared to other variants. I guess they figured that lifting the restrictions won't overwhelm the health system any more, especially due to their high vaccination rate. There are only 33 people in ICUs today (for the population of 5,8 mil).

Covid-19 surveillance

Yes, that seems to be what it is about.

We hear the same thing here. It is all about hospitalisation numbers, not about case numbers. "Our hospitals are coping". We are almost through our first real peak of covid infections.

Dr Nick Coatsworth (leading viral specialist) says that Omicron patients spend about ½ the time in hospital that Delta patients did. Which basically doubles the hospitals capacity.

Mind you, all across the nation, school restarts next week after the long summer break. We'll see what happens then.
We just recently started vaxxing the 5-11 year olds ... 36% of them have received their 1st dose.
The 12-15 year olds are 76% fully vaxxed.
The 16-18 year olds are 93% fully vaxxed.

Can I be superficial for a minute? I am so bummed that I have not been able to go to the beauty salon for weeks: my hair is a mess- All during the pandemic (prior to Omicron) I was willing to take the slight risk to get my hair styled, dyed, cut, etc. However, I see Omicron as a horse of a different color. The salon I found here in Florida (with help of the lovely lady from WS), is vaccinated and masked, but with Omicron I don't think that is enough to protect me as a vulnerable person though vaxxed and boosted. Do ya all think I am doing the right thing? Thing is, I know nothing about this stylist- she could be living with grandchildren and teenagers for all I know- I just am not willing to take the risk so I guess I will have to wear wigs for a while ( my hair is very thin and needs lots of dye, style, good cut and a good stylist) to make it look decent. That is just the way it is. Maybe I am being too cautious but I just don't think so. I don't want any version of this virus- including the so-called "mild" version. My husband and I don't go anywhere but to the store and we are masked.

I haven't been willing to take the risk since the beginning of the pandemic, so I've been cutting my own hair. I'm a gray-haired old lady in my 70s with wavy/curly short hair (pretty forgiving when I don't do a great job of cutting it). I gave up on coloring my hair many years ago. DH doesn't care!

I hope you will be able to get your hair professionally done to your liking sooner rather than later, because I know you'll feel better when you do!!

I am a little down about my hair -- To be honest my hair is really crappy,
But with the right cut, dye and other products you wouldn't know it was
Thin- I am hoping Omicron begins to decrease soon---so much misery
From this super contagious variant!!!!!

I'm the "lovely lady" who found you the salon where they are vaxed, but you need to do what makes you comfortable.

If you feel that the stylist may be less cautious outside, that's a real worry, and I think you are even more anxious because of Florida’s complete lack of masking mandates. I know I worry for my parents every day down there. They are nearly 90, not in great shape, and a lot of their friends in their gated community have died from Covid. We went down there three times since June but they won’t let us come now.

I know you feel so much better when your hair is done, but if it gives you anxiety then I would wait a bit more. However, I’ve never worn a wig but I’ve heard they are hot and itchy. Are you comfortable wearing more of a baseball cap thing instead when you need to go to the store? That’s what I think I would choose if I were in a hot climate and needed to cover my hair.

IMO @ilovewings, remember that as self-conscious as you are feeling about the state of your hair, most people don’t even notice. Even though you feel conspicuous, probably everyone is just wrapped up in their own stuff. You have a lovely husband who doesn’t care about your hair but just cares about your sense of safety and security. That’s a blessing.

.Thank you "lovely lady" for your response and kind words. i look better in a wig than a baseball cap, but no matter, I will not get my hair done until I feel safe
Doing so -- In the big picture, this is but a small blip--- there are so many ways
This pandemic has impacted our lives ---it just seems like it will never end!!!!

Similar in the UK. Hospitalisations peaked week ending 9th January and are coming down now. I've also been monitoring the stats for deaths in hospitals in NHS England, and they seem to have peaked about 10 days ago and are also coming down.

One of the UK stats I have picked up on from my own observations and that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else though is the deaths in the over 80's. Since about last February when vaccines first started to kick in the death rate numbers in the over 80's has pretty much paralleled those in the 60-80 age range (and at times 60-80 rate was even slightly higher). But in the last few weeks I've noticed that the numbers of deaths in the over 80's has actually gone higher again.

It's all about weighing up the risks isn't it?

There was an interesting article about vaccination levels among various professions in the UK Yahoo is part of the Yahoo family of brands - the lowest vaccination levels were in bar staff, waiters, beauticians, roofers and hairdressers.

Families Are Going Rogue With Rapid Tests

This is so GROSS I can't even believe it! No. Stop the madness. Who would even think this is okay?

The family that plays together stays together.

The family that tests the stick together gets sick together.

Pass that stick!

Roger Seheult, MD of MedCram discusses the FDA decision to limit EUA for some monoclonal interventions.
My husband received his infusion today. He received Sotrovimab which appears to be the only one that works against omicron.

I haven’t gone to get my hair cut in 2 yrs. Thankfully, I decided to gray gracefully prior to the pandemic. I’ve been trimming my own hair while my husband oversees. I’m retired and we don’t go out and about much so it doesn’t matter what my hair looks like to others. At this stage of my life, my health is more important than my appearance.

It is good that he was able to get the only MAB that works against
Omicron. Hoping he will feel better soon.
