@mickey2942 , reading the twitter thread below made me think of you and your comment about you/people being pushed to return to work too soon or while still sick.

In particular I note her mention that complete rest may end up being important in avoiding or minimizing Long Covid.

Glad you are insisting on doing what works best for you!

MOO

Interesting reading. I was too sick to drive for a test or medication. I have also been terminated from a job, I started getting sick three weeks ago, kept going to work. I was obviously sick, because I made some really stupid mistakes, looking at my work that week, I can't believe it. I had to take five days off, I couldn't catch up, and I continue to be exhausted. Well, at least I have plenty of time to rest now. LOL.

In case you haven't seen this ad for Paxlovid:
If I get Covid again, I'll definitely ask for Paxlovid. I wish I'd told my doctor in late December that I would like to take it; I would probably have gotten over it faster, and maybe I would not have lost smell and taste. My sense of smell has not fully recovered. :(

Long Covid, which is still being learned about, is currently looking like it directly affects at least 25% of all people who have had covid, regardless of whether their case was initially mild or not.

Long Covid can be anything from "it took me months to get my sense of smell back", to "I now seem to have no immune system and catch every bug going around, including deadly ones" to "I now have serious heart (or lung, or blood, or digestive, or nerve, etc etc etc) issues that I didn't have prior to covid.

Indirectly, of course, this affects everyone, because when a large chunk of the population moves from "productive part of the workforce" to "disabled and in need of care", it rearranges almost everything about our economy.

I do have hope that within a few years we will have vaccines that prevent a much higher number of cases than the current vaccines, and/or work against all variants of the disease. (Heck, since it's a coronavirus, maybe they'll achieve a vaccine for the common cold while they're at it.)

But in the meantime I think caution and protection/prevention is the way to go, personally.

All MOO of course.

Update from the Retirement Home: surprisingly we have had zero Covid patients onboard for months now. Not that I still don't mask, because I do. We have a casino trip coming up next week and I plan on going but will be masked the whole time I am there (will be probably the only one!)
My grandchild arrived (my first one!) she is 6 weeks old now. My DIL made the decision that when she goes back to work in April, I will be watching the baby. No daycare due to everything "out" there. I am thrilled to say the least. It will only be three days a week- which is enough for me.
Hope everyone stays healthy and happy.

Congratulations on your new granddaughter! What sweetness awaits you.

Grandchildren are such a blessing. Congrats!

How wonderful! A new granddaughter and you'll be spending time with her every week. Congratulations to you and the new parents!

ETA: It's also good news about no Covid patients for months!

Where will you be watching the baby? At your DIL's home or in your apartment at the retirement home?

Congratulations grandma! :D

I too was wondering where you will be watching her... hopefully at your DILs! :)

Covid can cause damage to the heart on a cellular level that can lead to lasting problems, including irregular heartbeats and heart failure, preliminary research suggests.

Covid’s effects on the heart have been well documented, but a new study zooms in on the microscopic changes thought to be caused by the virus.

Researchers from Columbia University in New York City examined autopsied heart tissue from people who had Covid, and found that the infection damaged the way cells in the heart regulate levels of calcium, a mineral that plays an important role in how the organ contracts and pumps blood throughout the body. In another part of the study, the same damage was seen in mice with Covid.

The findings, presented Monday at the Biophysical Society Meeting in San Diego, have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal...

I'm sorry to hear your sense of smell has not fully returned. Hopefully it will soon. Take care of yourself.

Covid is a nasty evil virus.

You have sure been through a lot---sorry all of this is happening to you- hopefully you will feel better soon and now, as you said, you have lots of time to rest and get back to feeling better. ( I know this is unplanned rest, but rest is something you need to do)!

Thanks. I talked to my Mom last night, and it has been about a month since I took my test, my voice is still hoarse, and I have graduated now to a severe head cold. She could tell that I still sounded sick.

At least the fatigue is fading.

Is there any point in actually going? You might as well stay at home if you're that worried.

Welcome to WS and to the thread. :) She’s already back. If you go back in the thread a little bit you will see her posts from the cruise.

Yes, the cruise ship offers many activities and entertainment. My husband and I are the only ones in our immediate family. However, we still travel with our families and take the same precautions.
You may not fall in a high-risk category and feel you don't need to take safeguards to protect yourself of any of your at-risk loved ones.
