There’s a new Covid variant in town.

The strain, known as XEC, is gaining a foothold in the United States, accounting for an estimated 5.7% of new cases in the past two weeks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.

What do you think the chance of you having contracted Covid right around the time of your vaccine, which made you think what you were dealing with was the vaccine, when it could have been an actual case of Covid. I have not heard of anyone having side effects from the vaccine that lasted that long. All I've heard about is 1-2 days, maybe 3.

Most people have a sore arm right after being vaccinated, and more body-wide effects like fever and chills within 8 to 12 hours.

With that said... this article is saying up to 10 days for lymph nodes for some people:

Common side effects include pain at the injection site, fever, body aches and headaches. These reactions are frequent (and indicate that your body is making an immune response to the vaccine) and should go away within 1-2 days, with the exception that swollen lymph nodes may persist up to about 10 days.

I hope those problems go away very soon. I cannot bring myself to get another shot-- it has been
Over two years since the last one--_I admit to being fearful of the vaccine now--- I did get
Those 2 initial shots and 2 boosters, but I believe with all the variants since then, the formulation
Keeps changing and I dont believe there have been clinical trials in a long time.

Take care and feel better soon

I believe all vaccines need to go through a clinical trial but I could be wrong about that.

And the formulas HAVE TO change because the virus is evolving at breakneck speed because of the lack of people masking and staying up-to-date with the vaccines IMO. You (meant generally) should want them to change or they might as well inject you with sugar water. I know I want them to change and quite frankly, I wish they'd do it more often than once a year.

Per Moderna's trial page:

Clinical trials are carefully controlled scientific studies that evaluate how well new or modified medicines may treat or prevent diseases in people.
[Snip]
All new treatments and vaccines must go through several stages of research (also called “phases”) in order to determine if the new treatment or vaccine is safe and effective in people. Clinical trials are usually conducted in four phases that build on one another, with each phase designed to answer certain questions.

More here: What are Clinical Trials

And from the CDC:

Before vaccines are made available to people in real-world settings, FDA assesses the findings from clinical trials.

Keep in mind the FDC always gives their approval before the new covid vaccines have been released for use. That is after they've seen that the trials were successful.

FDA approved and authorized the 2024-2025 mRNA COVID-19 vaccines on August 22, 2024. FDA authorized Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine, Adjuvanted (2024 – 2025 Formula) under Emergency Use Authorization on August 30, 2024.

This is currently what's going around in my smallish city of ~56K population. Wastewater results are a bit behind.

I had really weird symptoms (for me) and no fever which I did have when I had Covid (obvi another strain 11/22). The previous shots I had made me feel head achy for maybe a day but this shot was just a lot of malaise and a really bad back ache. I took NSAID - low dose and a pain patch on my back and my digestive tract was just not normal. I had the flu shot 1 week after the Covid and no symptoms from that, not even muscle soreness. Of course I could have had any other thing but the symptoms followed the shot. No swollen lymph nodes.

I want to clarify--for as awful as I feel from the vaccine--I am grateful for the vaccine. Somehow, I have *knocks on wood* gone over 4 years without catching COVID. Everyone my age who gets it says it has been awful and that they still haven't gotten back to normal. I'll take my 3-4 days of misery from the jab :)

I believe the vaccine is the reason we are back to a normal life. Without a vaccine I cannot imagine what the global death toll would have been, let alone our country. So many people just don't seem to realize this. I guess they forgot the corpses that were stacked up on trucks in New York, the people who died on ventilators- and how they were not allowed to be comforted at the time of their death. It was just horrible-- the vaccines changed all of that- it is a shame that so many people to this day fail to understand this.

I'm in agreement with everything you said except your first sentence. I believe the reason we are back to "a normal life" (It's not back to normal, IMO) is because people do NOT like thinking about something as unpleasant as a pandemic, and all the privileges and freedom's taken away (NO entrance without a mask, businesses and schools being closed, some businesses requiring employees to get vaccinated, even if it was against their wishes for whatever their personal reasons are, etc.), and gladly put the pandemic in their rearview mirrors. I also think a lot of people think it's over. It ain't over, folks!

I also believe that a lot of those people didn't even pay half the attention about the science of it, nor keep current on the news, like this very small group of individuals does. Had they done that, and if they knew the consequences that they could potentially have long-term health problems, and/or the lack of energy to do everyday things, that only came about because of a case, or multiple cases of covid, then and ONLY then, would more people take more precautions.

All JMO.

The pandemic itself is over- that does not mean that Covid variants are not out there and infecting and killing people. I believe we got back to a normal existence- we are pretty much living normally- people are dining out, going to parties and sporting events, and for the most part living like they did before the pandemic ( I am not one of them because I haven't been vaccinated in a long time)--- I believe people getting the vaccine was responsible for the virus receding as a pandemic--- also, many people did mask up- not everyone of course- but many people did. And there were lockdowns (which caused extremists to lose their minds)--- The Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, became the target of angry extremists for taking strong action against the pandemic including lockdowns----I am glad she did that. I see comments from people on, for example, Yahoo, who call the pandemic a hoax and believe that "big pharma" manufactured these "shots" which they say are not vaccines, just to make money. These are strange times

I was very surprised by my husband’s younger brother’s reaction the other day. They were on the phone having their normal, friendly chat when my husband mentioned he and I had just gotten our Covid vaccine shots that day.

His brother’s voice suddenly changed, and sounded angry! He said, “Why did you?!! I’m not getting another shot!” My husband hadn’t “preached” or suggested his brother get vaxxed—he was simply telling him matter-of-factly that he and I had gotten our shots that day.

That told me there are still some with very negative attitudes towards the whole subject. My husband answered him by saying, “I’m over 70! I want all the protection I can get.”

(His brother is in his late 50s, and has had Covid at least two times that I’m aware of. Unknown to me how many times he’s been vaxxed. I suspect just the first double dose only, perhaps. Just for reference.)

My take on this is that it is (mistakenly, IMO) no longer a declared emergency, which is a governmental designation unrelated to the biological spread of infections. And maybe some governmental entities have also declared the pandemic over (did they switch that designation to endemic? I can't recall).

But in any case I think they were wrong to do so and I think the actual transmission of the disease has not waned much. Differing variants are more or less transmissible, and more or less symptomatic, or have symptoms less likely to be identified as covid (such as headaches, or stomach issues rather than respiratory issues). There is a perception that fewer people are dying of it, but I don't know if that's actually true.

As a decent proportion of the population now catches covid on a regular basis, they have some degree of immunity for a few months following each infection. And people may be entirely unaware of some or all of their infections (if they are asymptomatic or have mild or nonrespiratory symptoms).

I think the societal impact of covid will probably re-emerge into people's awareness in the next few years, as the proportion of people functionally disabled by Long Covid becomes noticeable across the culture (such as it being harder to find workers for jobs that require a level of physical stamina). Those impacts will become obvious (IMO) even if people don't initially recognize the problems as being covid-related. Eventually I hope medical research will make the case clearly.

I think very few people are protected by vaccine by now, since any protection (and said protection is not against infection at all, but only against severe symptoms) wanes after 3-4 months, and so many people haven't gotten one in longer than that.

Even worse is that virtually no one still masks -- even in places where masks were standard prior to the pandemic, such as cancer treatment centers etc! To me that is horrifying.

With an infection that has such a high frequency of being fully asymptomatic, the ONLY way I can see to slow the spread is for people to mask when they are in enclosed spaces with others, especially crowds. So I really grieve when I see that masking is not only not happening much anymore, but that the culture is actually discouraging it. In some places to the point of legally barring it under some irrelevent faux-concerns. The virus is apolitical but will continue to thrive in such environments.

Again and always, MOO.

Four years after SARS-CoV2 sparked a devastating global pandemic, U.S. health officials now consider COVID-19 an endemic disease.

"At this point, COVID-19 can be described as endemic throughout the world," Aron Hall, the deputy director for science at the CDC's coronavirus and other respiratory viruses division, told NPR in an interview.

That means, essentially, that COVID is here to stay in predictable ways.

We received our free covid-19 self-tests in the mail today from the goverment. Once again they are sending out test kits that have expired dates on the boxes, but the FDA has extended their expirtation dates and you have to go to the FDA website to check for the new expiration date. at www.fda.gov/covidtestdates

The boxes I received have the expiration date of December 26, 2023 on them. Looks like they have been extended until December 26, 2024, so good for 2 1/2 more months.

Also, they are from a company I have never heard of or seen before, it is OHC, Osang Health Care, out of South Korea, but authorized by the FDA.

Two tests per box. If symptoms, need to do serial testing a few days apart.

If no symptoms, need to do serial testing three times a few days apart. But in this case, you need three tests, and there are only two tests per box. Good thing the goverment sent each household two boxes (households that ordered them free online).

ebm for typos

Figures. I wondered if they were going to do that again. The last batch I received had expired dates so I checked the site to see what extended expiration date was for them. I was a tad shocked, and ticked off, that even the extended date was expired! I was like... Seriously?!?!?

I contacted both the CDC and USPS (who was in charge of mailing them out). USPS took months to reply to me and when they did, their answer had NOTHING to do about my issue. smh

I don't know if this applies to all the different variations of tests, but I was told by a public health nurse a year or two ago that as long as the control line is still clearly visible, the test is still working properly even if the marked expiration date is past.

That makes total sense. Thank you, Auntie!!

We got appointments at Walmart for our Covid and flu shots this Friday Oct. 4. I wanted it sooner, but wasn’t able to make an appointment last month—too much going on. I tried for RiteAid in our town, but the soonest was Oct. 14. The Walmart website was much easier to deal with than RiteAid. We have to go further, but will make a little outing out of it, before coming home and spending the following day in bed.

On Sunday I booked a same day appointment at CVS for flu and Covid shots.
While there, they talked me into the shingles shot.
So all three in left arm.
They hurt.
I've had no side effects whatsoever, very lucky.
Moderna.
They booked my appointment for second dose of shingles already, too.

I had a Covid shot at Costco on Tuesday, Moderna. The shot site was red, with a large bump and hot. I was sick last night and went to bed at 6, with a crushing headache, feeling alternatively hot and cold. Today, I have the wonderful affects of lower intestinal flu.
