The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.

There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.

New Chinese virus 'will have infected hundreds'

Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.

Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.

But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

Experts say the fact three Chinese tourists have tested positive for the virus outside Wuhan indicates the disease toll may be higher than reported.

Trump explains why travel from the UK hasn't been restricted

“One of the reasons UK basically has been (excluded from the restrictions is) it’s got the border. It’s got very strong borders and they’re doing a very good job,” Trump said during an Oval Office meeting with Ireland’s Leo Varadkar.

“They don’t have very much infection at this point and hopefully they’ll keep it that way,” he added.

This may have been posted already, but if not, here is the Ministry of Health page for Ontario. It lists the ages, genders, transmission/travel and status of those who have had positive test results. The site is updated daily.

Although the US isn't yet named as a "Currently Affected Area", most of the cases in ON seem to have been transmitted through travel to the US and close contact. It also shows an affected age group which is younger than I expected.

FTSE 100 index suffers second-worst day ever

Britain’s FTSE 100 has suffered its biggest one-day loss since October 1987, and its second worst day ever.

The escalating coronavirus crisis has triggered an absolute rout in the City again, and around Europe, as Donald Trump’s EU flight ban sparks alarm -- and fuels fears of a global recession.

Investors appear to be pricing in a serious pandemic, with quarantine measures and lockdowns in major cities leading to huge economic cost, and losing faith that policymakers can prevent it.

IMO Big Mistake !

Subject: COVID-19

Dear Presidents,

The University System of Georgia is consulting constantly with the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Governor’s Coronavirus Task Force. DPH has advised that the risk of contracting the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Georgia remains low.

Therefore, all 26 USG institutions will remain open for face-to-face education at this time.

For those of you, or anyone on your campus who may be traveling, please make sure they remain in regular contact with your campus for operational updates.

Morons. They'll be changing their tune in a week.

I’m failing to understand his magical 250 number.

It slows down the transmission rate. This is important so that fewer people are in contact with the virus at any one time. Management of serious cases depends upon the rate that the virus goes through the population. If it can be dragged out longer, with fewer people sick or potentially sick at one time, then everyone can be treated as needed over a longer period.

If you have huge crowds exposed to the virus, and potentially all coming down with health issues at once, then that puts an unmanageable strain on the health care resources which would need to treat more people than what they have the infrastructure to handle.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS?
Italy has 60 million people....US has 300 million.
5 times more....with simple math, we could be faced with 15,000 cases A DAY.....

Wow at first I was thinking this wouldn't get too big and hopefully some kind of handle would be put on it. But, I will be the first to admit that I am a little scared. We do not have any cases in our county in TX but there are cases in each of the counties around us. This is getting way bigger than I thought.

I have a comment and a question: obviously our government is one big huge fail when it comes to testing. it is obvious, without testing the spread will continue -- the CDC has admitted they have failed in this regard so what is anybody going to do about it? are the people just going to drop like flies because our government has failed us in the most critical part of this pandemic? The Governor of New York is having a commercial lab do testing in his state- so what are other states doing, if anything, and if other states are not doing this, why aren't they---
