The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.

There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.

New Chinese virus 'will have infected hundreds'

Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.

Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.

But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

Experts say the fact three Chinese tourists have tested positive for the virus outside Wuhan indicates the disease toll may be higher than reported.

Hey Everyone,

After SillyBilly's warning, I am still seeing political posts.

I really REALLY want to keep this thread open. This thread is needed but everyone needs to stop with the politics. Stop with the complaining about politics. Stop with the complaining about posters complaining about politics.

PLEASE JUST STOP!

Thank you,

Hey Everyone,

If you want to quote what the president or anyone in his administrations who give information on what they are doing to contain the virus that is absolutely fine.

OK, I AM YELLING AGAIN AND I AM GETTING ANGRY.

IF YOU FEEL THIS IS A HOAX - IF YOU FEEL THIS IS ALL "FAKE NEWS" THEN DO NOT POST ON THIS THREAD. STAY OFF THIS THREAD. THIS THREAD IS FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE TAKING THE VIRUS SERIOUSLY AND WANT TO POST ABOUT FACTS AND ABOUT SOLUTIONS. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO YOUR OPINION BUT YOUR OPINION WILL CAUSE THIS THREAD DO GO UP IN FLAMES AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN COME HERE AND GET FACTS. WE NEED TO TAKE THIS VIRUS SERIOUSLY AND THAT IS WHY THIS THREAD IS ON WEBSLEUTHS. PLEASE GO TO ANOTHER DISCUSSION IN THE MISSING OR IN COLD CASES AND DO SOME GOOD.

Not yelling now. We should not get hysterical about the virus but we need to discuss this virus seriously. A big difference between the two. In the same vein, we should not shrug our shoulders and say it's no big deal and it is a media hysteria.

While I respect you have the right to your opinion I have the right to ask you to leave this thread so we can discuss the virus without disruption.

Rarely do I pull this statement out but here it comes; I am the owner and the final decisions on what can be discussed and rules are all on me. I want to be as inclusive as possible but in a real National Emergency declared by the president, I have a responsibility to make sure we discuss the facts and we discuss virus in a logical and factual way.

Thank you.
Tricia.
PS. I am not getting hysterical about the virus I am getting angry at the thought of how fast this thread could literally shut the whole forum down, Our wonderful mods do not need the stress.

Kudos to the front line employees out there who are unable to maintain a distance from their customers. Cashiers, Foodservice folks, Ticket sellers, Receptionists, Bus drivers, First Responders, Retail workers, and on and on. I'm beginning to think they all deserve some sort of hazardous duty pay. IMO

Coronavirus control measures aren't pointless – just slowing down the pandemic could save millions of lives
The goal is to “flatten the curve.” Rather than letting the virus quickly rampage through the population and burn itself out fast, the idea is to spread all those infections out over a longer period of time.
Yes, it would potentially prolong the epidemic. But in doing so, public health agencies and the health care infrastructure gain invaluable time to respond to the crisis.

Most importantly, “flattening the curve” provides an opportunity to significantly reduce deaths from COVID-19.

On the steep rise of the epidemic curve, especially when testing capacity is lacking, there is a tremendous burden on health care providers – many of whom will fall ill themselves and be forced to self-isolate, becoming unable to provide care for those in need. At the same time, there is immense pressure placed on health care facilities where demand for patient care will outpace capacity – things like the number of hospital beds, ventilators and so on – for a significant amount of time.

So yes, even if every person on Earth eventually comes down with COVID-19, there are real benefits to making sure it doesn’t all happen in the next few weeks.

Does anyone have handy links to information about certain high blood pressure medicines being not safe when acquiring this disease? I wanna share with loved ones... thanks!
I will try to link it here. I took a screen shot to show hubby.

I know this thread will close soon but before I go to bed I thought I’d mention food pantries. In my county, there are numerous ways to help, or to benefit. An online search for food bank will show you a link for your county or region. They accept donations of cash, food, paper products, etc. The volunteer group I’m part of does food drives and writes a check. They are always so appreciative. Losing pay is going to mean a huge hit, and the effects will be immediate, unlike your unemployment check...

A USDA food pick up includes protein (meat, cheese, dairy), canned goods, dry goods and produce. This is federally funded by county so you have to fill out a form your first visit.

A Grocery pick up is generally canned & dry goods. These are popular with churches. Many times they provide detergent, paper towels, etc. also.

A Produce Only pick up is whatever the donator (grocery store or farmer) has available. In my county, these are refrigerated trucks that go to a parking lot to make the distribution. Last week they tried to entice me to take a case of apples!

Also, many local farmers run businesses that are not frequented in person. Call them, see what they have. Many times, they’ll deliver to those who can’t get out. If they grow a variety of crops, ask to buy a variety bushel/box. Shop local and small whenever you can.

Does anyone else remember reading The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls? That book had a profound effect on me wanting to make sure we had enough food put aside.
Yes. In fact, I read it again as an adult during a long hard winter of blizzards, and I recommend that everyone read it again as an adult.
