Maybe. But it has worked for some patients. Maybe it was a coincidence?

People across US say anti-malaria drug helped them recover from COVID-19 | Daily Mail Online

Miracle' malaria drug touted by Trump saved us from coronavirus, claim Americans: Infected patients across US say hydroxychloroquine helped them recover - despite experts' insistence evidence of its effectiveness is slim

    • New York will start trials for anti-malaria drug Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said
    • The drug, hydroxychloroquine is used to treat malaria, as well as some non-infectious inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis
    • Several people have come forward saying the drug has helped fight COVID-19
    • Rio Giardinieri, of Florida, said the drug 'saved his life' after he testes positive
    • Margaret Novins, of New Jersey, also said the medication made her feel better
    • There are currently no approved treatments or preventive vaccines for the virus
    • Researchers are studying existing treatments and working on experimental ones, but current patients receive only supportive care like breathing assistance

The Florida man who claims his severe coronavirus case was cured overnight by an anti-malaria drug touted by President Trump says he’s feeling good a week later — but has warned others not to try the “dangerous” drug at home.

Rio Giardinieri, 52, said he returned to his Miami Shores home Tuesday night and is recovering well after being prescribed hydroxychloroquine, according to Yahoo News.

“Man, I’m alive and kickin’,” Giardinieri told the outlet. “Feeling good.”

But he warned people not to take the “game-changing” drug without a doctor’s consent.

The drug is proven safe in humans. Not taking it when infected is proven to be unsafe. I am not aware of a downside.

I would question the motives of any doctor or politician that says otherwise.

What makes you think they are not? My guess is they are probably just as accurate as ours are. Our numbers are only the tip of the iceberg.

I dont believe for a minute their numbers line up with their population density. They also lied about spread. And doctors and reporters trying to sound the alarm disappeared like that. Leopards don't change their spots. Jmo

I am not worried. I am hiding behind this wall of toilet paper, coffee cans, and cigarette cartons in my backroom "mancave", readin yall's WS posts, and watching TV. I ain't coming out for nothing till this is all over........Yall stay home, please...........Thank you.........moo

Listen, Cody, Get up and start packing 1x roll of TP and 1x can of coffee per box and start shipping the packages off to the rest of us...Pronto

It is important to listen. Never will I question credentials. Some people state the facts.....others, not so much. IMO, IMO....moo
Okay, I admit I see her in a different light. I think her career has been heroic, and I have a hard time believing she would allow herself to be a 'puppet' now, when she has always been such a warrior in the global fight against AIDS.

I guess we will see how things unfold.

New update from the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. Based on Iceland's statistics, they estimate an infection fatality ratio between 0.05% and 0.14%.

Global Covid-19 Case Fatality Rates - CEBM

Let's just take the middle of that range (0.1%). Does it sound small?

It's 1 in 1000 people. The center point (age wise) of the curve is unknown for sure, but let's say 72 (because there are fewer people over 90 and because under 80's are more likely to be working, including all those retired doctors and nurses).

So about 9000 people living in New York City. Maybe more, as it's more densely populated (Iceland's study doesn't include as many public transport and elevator situations - places where there's higher viral loading). Many of those people will be 55-72, and some will be younger than 50 (as we're seeing - especially with the repeated exposure typical in healthcare settings).

For California, it means 390,000 deaths and for New York as a whole, about 200,000 people.

I believe Iceland's figures to be in the ballpark, we could go higher or lower (many factors - but it's clear that big crowded cities have it worse, and Iceland has none of those).

(Interesting Azithromycin is used for viral infections, since it is an antiB)

Trump's claim that malaria drug can treat coronavirus gives hope, but little evidence it will work

From link:
All the hype has led to disastrous results for an Arizona man who took chloroquine phosphate, believing it would protect him from the coronavirus. His wife also took some and is in critical condition, according to NBC News. The toxic ingredient they consumed was not the medication form of chloroquine, used to treat malaria in humans. Instead, it was an ingredient listed on a parasite treatment for fish.

The man’s wife told NBC News she had watched televised briefings during which Trump talked about the potential benefits of chloroquine.

I felt very sorry for the viewer on CNN who has Lupus and hydroxychloroquine is the only drug that helps him and now he can’t get his prescription refilled in any pharmacy now or in the foreseeable future.

idk but my dad is dying right now in hospital and no one is allowed to be with him, not even my mom
Hugs! I’m so sorry for your dad and family. I cannot imagine. I will say a prayer for your family.
Locally, a lady posted on Fb asking a nurse to please stop in her mom’s hospital room to tell her mom who she loved her and hoped someone could hold her mom’s hand as she was dying. Mom was a former nurse. This happened a day or so after the hospital activated a no visitor policy. I’m so appreciative that my sister and I were able to be with my mom as she died.
Just about every country affected is using that drug. Mayor Cuomo has embraced it as well. It’ll be interesting to see some hard data in regards to how effective it ultimately is.

We’ll learn a lot from what happens in New York.
We will learn much from NY. Cuomo is loud, however, I also want the states that are suffering to get the same attention, proportionately to its needs. California, Washington, and my state of Louisiana are also epicenters.

I don't see it as 'insane.' This same drug has been used for years by people with auto immune disease. No one is declaring it is a dangerous or toxic drug in those cases. The patients are happy with it and rely upon it's benefits.

Both China and France have used it with the C Virus, with some beneficial results. So why not test it on those with severe cases, to see if it is effective? What will a severely ill patient have to lose if there is no other treatment available?

There are patients who swear that this drug saved their lives recently. Some have done interviews. I saw a doctor interviewed, who was using it last month with great results, according to him.

I don't see anything in the above article that makes it seem like a 'crazy' idea to offer it to those in dire situations. JMO

Well, since patients with Lupus and other autoimmune diseases where chloroquinone are having their prescriptions cancelled while we're learning that certain people are stockpiling it, there's a shortage. Are we willing to take at-risk patient's medicine for trials right now?

That's unethical.

So is stockpiling medicine for your friends and family.

Major events weren’t being cancelled. Someone linked a few Chinese New Year events cancelled. One of the articles said that it was cancelled to stand in solidarity with China.
The first death in the US wasn’t until February 29th.

I’m from Louisiana and Mardi Gras has been over weeks ago. Easter is fast approaching. Our governor closed non-essential businesses days ago and schools have been closed for a couple of weeks. During today’s press conference, Gov. Edwards said our numbers continue to increase and we’ve yet to flatten the curve.
Oops...this was in response to the Mardi Gras comment. Sorry.

Cloroquine and hydroxycholoquine

"At a press conference on Friday, President Donald Trump called chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine a “game changer.”
...

Encouraging cell study results with chloroquines against two other viral diseases, dengue and chikungunya, didn’t pan out in people in randomized clinical trials. And nonhuman primates infected with chikungunya did worse when given chloroquine. “Researchers have tried this drug on virus after virus, and it never works out in humans. The dose needed is just too high,” says Susanne Herold, an expert on pulmonary infections at the University of Giessen.
...

Chinese researchers who report treating more than 100 patients with chloroquine touted its benefits in a letter in BioScience, but the data underlying the claim have not been published ... results have been hard to come by ... no data has been shared regarding the chloroquine studies.

Hydroxychloroquine, in particular, might do more harm than good. The drug has a variety of side effects and can in rare cases harm the heart."

You have to wonder who the hell is writing these prescriptions. I don’t know what the hell people are doing self medicating, especially if they don’t even have the virus to begin with.

Just because a drug may work in the context of treatment by a medical professional, doesn’t mean people should be allowed to have their doctor write a prescription to treat an ailment they do not have.

It’s worse than people hoarding food, because people’s health is jeopardized by not having access to a drug they need.

It’s ridiculous.

The drug is proven safe in humans. Not taking it when infected is proven to be unsafe. I am not aware of a downside.

I would question the motives of any doctor or politician that says otherwise.

Didnt two people die the other day from 'self medicating' with this drug after being diagnosed?? If not this drug a very similar one, same drug classification. Whichever article it was, said to never 'self medicate' using it.

Guess that's true of all drugs though....even with COVID19.

Are antibiotics effective in preventing and treating the new coronavirus?
No, antibiotics do not work against viruses, only bacteria.

The new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus and, therefore, antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment.

However, if you are hospitalized for the 2019-nCoV, you may receive antibiotics because bacterial co-infection is possible.
