The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.
There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.
New virus in China ‘will have infected hundreds'
Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.
Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.
But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

In case you have not read the opening posts above, please etch this part of Tricia's post above in your memory:

NO MATTER HOW FRUSTRATED YOU FEEL, HOW GRATEFUL YOU FEEL OR HOW YOU FEEL WITH ANY OF THE COMMENTS COMING FROM THE WHITEHOUSE OR THEIR ADMINISTRATION DO NOT PUT IT ON THIS THREAD. DO NOT PUT TOGETHER A POST THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A POLITICAL STATEMENT AND THEN TRY AND SAY IT IS NOT

Hey everyone,

Politicizing is not allowed. We realize it's difficult to separate Covid from politics in this discussion, but ...

If you are going to post about 1 or 1 million people attending a rally, a church event, etc, put on by God knows who, make sure your post indicates how the content of that post relates to Covid19 and isn't just about politics or political figures.

From Tricia's post at the beginning of each of these threads:

NO MATTER HOW FRUSTRATED YOU FEEL, HOW GRATEFUL YOU FEEL OR HOW YOU FEEL WITH ANY OF THE COMMENTS COMING FROM THE WHITEHOUSE OR THEIR ADMINISTRATION DO NOT PUT IT ON THIS THREAD. DO NOT PUT TOGETHER A POST THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A POLITICAL STATEMENT AND THEN TRY AND SAY IT IS NOT.

This post lands at random.

Address the post and NOT the poster.

Snarky, rude and personalizing posts that disrespect or denigrate another member get removed and may result in a permanent Thread Reply Ban or a board Time Out.

Politics, racial tensions, dismantling of statues, and protests are off limits.

If members wish to mention protests as they relate to the potential for spreading of the virus, that's fine, but otherwise it is off limits.

This post lands at random.

It is a violation of TOS to post off topic. Political and other off topic posts have been removed and serious TOs are being issued for those who derail the thread with such posts.

WS does not have a staff of hundreds to deal with all the Reports of TOS violations, not to mention it is very discourteous to members and guests who come here to read about the virus.

Stay on topic or there will be a loss of posting privileges.

This post lands at random.

The Covid19 forum was set up by Tricia for those who take this virus seriously and are concerned about its effects on them and their loved ones. If you aren't concerned about Covid then please don't post here with a view to downplaying or minimizing the threat and making others feel that their concerns are not warranted.

If Covid does not concern you, this thread is not for you.

US coronavirus cases hit 3 million, stoking fears of overwhelmed hospitals

US coronavirus cases hit 3 million, stoking fears of overwhelmed hospitals

By Jane Wardell

...
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States pushed past 3 million on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST), according to a Reuters tally, roughly equal to the population of Nevada, stoking fears that hospitals will be overwhelmed.

The United States has the highest known numbers of both COVID-19 cases and deaths in the world. More than 130,000 Americans have died from the disease, a toll that experts warn will likely surge following recent record spikes in case numbers in many states.

In the first seven days of July, 18 states have reported record increases in new cases of COVID-19, according to a Reuters tally.
In Texas alone, the number of hospitalised patients more than doubled in just two weeks. The Democratic mayor of Austin warned over the weekend that his city's hospitals could reach capacity in two weeks and run out of intensive care unit (ICU) beds in 10 days. In Arizona, about 90% of ICU beds are full.

Yes, we certainly are further away from anyone else. However, we left Aussies stranded all over the world, and had visitors trapped in our country, when we slammed our borders closed.

Our Prime Minister was/is strong (and he listened to his Chief Medical Officer). He negated the inconvenience of the suddenly closed international borders until he had us prepared. Then Aussies were slowly brought home on Qantas repatriation flights, and he allowed United to come and fly visitors out of the country.

Not all geography. imo
Tough leadership. Just like Jacinda Ardern. And a 'suck it up and shut up' general attitude among our cultures.

Absolutely, you acted swiftly and it paid off while we dithered about and it has cost us dearly. If we'd shut the airports we could have concentrated on the old folks in hospital and we wouldn't have lost 20,000 of them (almost half our total deaths). Those two things are by far our biggest mistakes :(

Hopefully next time there's a global pandemic we'll have worked out all the good ideas and bad ideas and bundled them into a perfect pandemic manual...in fact... we should make a list!!

#1 Slamming the borders down
#2 Washing our hands a lot while singing happy birthday

(FFS - that's what WE were doing while you were doing #1)

Well, how is NHS funded?
Well, the majority is funded through general taxation, as I imagine US government spending on healthcare to be.

The real difference is universal healthcare in the UK costs less than US government spending on healthcare, both in real terms per capita and % of GDP.

In 2018 government spending on healthcare was -

US - $9,009 per capita
UK - $2,509 per capita

Share of GDP -

US - 14.3%
UK - 7.8%

I'd rather pay less tax for healthcare and have universal healthcare coverage, IMO.

Coronavirus updates: Cases in SF are rising at rate that could 'overwhelm' system, health chief says

July 7, noon San Francisco Public Health Chief Grant Colfax said at a Tuesday press briefing the rate of infection is increasing at an alarming rate in the city.

The city is diagnosing 6.1 cases per 100,000 per day. The goal is to keep that number to 1.8.

"At this rate it could overwhelm the health care system and cause many deaths if we don’t get a handle on this right away," Colfax said. "I need San Franciscans to understand how serious and precarious this situation is."

Hospitalizations for people infected with COVID-19 have increased 25% over the past week. "Our goal is to increase less than 10%," Colfax said.

You know what is really sad about these colossal numbers is that the USA did put together a Covid Task Force team, a group of people who are more than capable of having a plan drawn up and pulling all the people into line. It's almost as if they are being denied the opportunity to put their expertise into practice. I know their jobs are on the line but I think that group of people will end up living to regret the level of loyalty they have shown to one man in particular. It's very sad IMO X
Here's one of the earlier Coronavirus Task Force briefing held on March 4, 2020. "The risk to the American public of contracting the coronary remains low.", "No need to buy a mask"

It's very interesting to rewatch knowing what we know now. We could have done better, IMO.

What? What? What is Florida thinking?
Florida now has the third highest COVID cases in the nation!

Orange County, which includes Orlando, has the country's eighth-largest school district with nearly 216,000 students and over 25,000 employees.

The state's Commissioner of the Department of Education, Richard Corcoran, issued an emergency order on Monday requiring all "brick and mortar schools" to open "at least five days per week for all students.
Florida will require schools to reopen in August despite a surge in coronavirus cases - CNN

Apparently the CDC is recommending it for all schools, regardless. And they are saying that the Fed Govt will provide lots of support.

I guess if Fed leadership in disease control recommends it, it perhaps takes some of the heat off the state leaders?

Sometime next week the CDC will provide guidelines, according to this news report.
