The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.
There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.
New virus in China ‘will have infected hundreds'
Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.
Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.
But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

In case you have not read the opening posts above, please etch this part of Tricia's post above in your memory:

NO MATTER HOW FRUSTRATED YOU FEEL, HOW GRATEFUL YOU FEEL OR HOW YOU FEEL WITH ANY OF THE COMMENTS COMING FROM THE WHITEHOUSE OR THEIR ADMINISTRATION DO NOT PUT IT ON THIS THREAD. DO NOT PUT TOGETHER A POST THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A POLITICAL STATEMENT AND THEN TRY AND SAY IT IS NOT

Hey everyone,

Politicizing is not allowed. We realize it's difficult to separate Covid from politics in this discussion, but ...

If you are going to post about 1 or 1 million people attending a rally, a church event, etc, put on by God knows who, make sure your post indicates how the content of that post relates to Covid19 and isn't just about politics or political figures.

From Tricia's post at the beginning of each of these threads:

NO MATTER HOW FRUSTRATED YOU FEEL, HOW GRATEFUL YOU FEEL OR HOW YOU FEEL WITH ANY OF THE COMMENTS COMING FROM THE WHITEHOUSE OR THEIR ADMINISTRATION DO NOT PUT IT ON THIS THREAD. DO NOT PUT TOGETHER A POST THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A POLITICAL STATEMENT AND THEN TRY AND SAY IT IS NOT.

This post lands at random.

Address the post and NOT the poster.

Snarky, rude and personalizing posts that disrespect or denigrate another member get removed and may result in a permanent Thread Reply Ban or a board Time Out.

Politics, racial tensions, dismantling of statues, and protests are off limits.

If members wish to mention protests as they relate to the potential for spreading of the virus, that's fine, but otherwise it is off limits.

This post lands at random.

It is a violation of TOS to post off topic. Political and other off topic posts have been removed and serious TOs are being issued for those who derail the thread with such posts.

WS does not have a staff of hundreds to deal with all the Reports of TOS violations, not to mention it is very discourteous to members and guests who come here to read about the virus.

Stay on topic or there will be a loss of posting privileges.

The Covid19 forum was set up by Tricia for those who take this virus seriously and are concerned about its effects on them and their loved ones. If you aren't concerned about Covid then please don't post here with a view to downplaying or minimizing the threat and making others feel that their concerns are not warranted.

If Covid does not concern you, this thread is not for you.

This doctor and his family got the coronavirus when they relaxed rules along with Florida's reopening - CNN

“Dr. Andrew Pastewski, the ICU medical director at Florida's Jackson South Medical Center, has been treating coronavirus patients at his hospital since the pandemic began. But when Florida started to loosen its stay-at-home orders and reopen, he did what a lot of Floridians did.

"We opened up," he said. "We allowed family to come over and visit."
Soon, coronavirus cases started appearing in his family. A cousin, a brother, then his own wife and kids, and finally Pastewski himself contracted the virus.

"I had a mom and grandmother drive themselves into my hospital, and only one drove home," he said.”

Oh wow, ICU Medical Director.
Did what everyone else is doing.
A mom and a grandmother.

Oh no. Why are pregnant women susceptible to complications?

I’m not sure if you saw this, but this is very troubling if true and blew me away yesterday:

Study results suggest pregnant women may be able to transmit coronavirus to their babies

Again, I’m also quite concerned about MIS-C, and expect to see more cases, jmo.

Horrible. That’s horrible. What’s sad is that unlike the flu (of which there are a gazillion strains), we could have controlled this much more than we did, IMO. We lost a lot of lives due to ineptitude.

“Bolivia's interim president and Venezuela's No. 2 leader announced Thursday that they have been infected with the new coronavirus, just days after Brazil's leader tested positive as the pandemic hits hard at some of Latin America's political elite.

Three Cabinet ministers in the administration of Bolivian leader Jeanine Anez have also tested positive for the virus, including Health Minister Eidy Roca and Presidency Minister Yerko Nunez, who is hospitalized.

The infections in Venezuela, Brazil and Bolivia, which is seeing a spike in cases, come after Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez tested positive in June and was briefly hospitalized.“

EXCLUSIVE: Dr. Deborah Birx Tells CBN News 3 Drugs to Fight COVID-19 in Final Human Trials

As the nation passed the 3 million mark in COVID-19 cases this week, CBN News has learned a vaccine could be closer than expected.

In an exclusive interview with CBN News, Dr. Deborah Birx, coronavirus response coordinator for the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said three drug candidates are in the final stage of human trials.

"We are making all of those vaccines even though we don't know if they work yet so even when we get that first signal that its safe and it works then we'll have doses that can really start by going to the most at risk," Birx explained.

The US is doing 600,000 COVID-19 tests a day. As a result, for the first time, Dr. Birx said they're able to see the full spectrum of the disease.

"We also have to remember that we've become better at treating individuals with COVID in the hospitals," Birx noted.

Inundated Houston hospitals issue grim advisory to ambulances: Go elsewhere
Officials in Houston warn of a potential replay of what happened in New York in the spring, when thousands of people died as hospitals struggled to keep up.

Patients waiting for beds in Houston hospitals are actually waiting for enough staff to treat them

“HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Hundreds of patients inside Houston hospitals were left waiting for beds for the second day in a row.

Ten hospitals in the area reported about 200 people who were waiting for a bed on Friday morning, even though hospitals have been saying for weeks they do have the capacity to help more people.”

“He didn’t really believe, he thought the disease was a hoax. He thought he was young and he was invincible and wouldn’t get affected by the disease,” Appleby told KSAT.

According to the doctor, the man went to a “COVID party.” Appleby said a “COVID party” is when someone who contracts the virus invites friends over for a party “to see if they can beat the disease.”

“One of the things that was heart-wrenching that he said to his nurse was, ‘you know, I think I made a mistake’ and this young man went to a COVID part,” Appleby said.

Boulder credits contact tracing for stopping spike in COVID-19 cases linked to parties

“The department is focused on contact tracing to stop the spread of COVID-19, reaching out to every person someone who is infected has come into contact with and asking them to quarantine.

"It’s truly one of the most critical tools that we have in the toolbox for preventing disease transmission in our community," Helwig said.

Over the last few months a team of 22 contact tracers in the county has reached out to more than 1,200 people who may have been exposed to the virus. When someone who tests positive goes to a party, it’s not exactly easy to figure out who they may have also infected.

"It makes it incredibly challenging," Helwig said. "We do try and get creative and say, did you have a group chat going that you could post this information so people can reach out to us."“
