Texas orders extra body bags, mortuary trucks as it braces for more coronavirus deaths

Texas officials and funeral home directors are ordering extra body bags and refrigerated trucks as they prepare for an increase in deaths from Covid-19, which has already killed 3,657 in the state.

FEMA is sending 14 refrigerated trucks to the state next week — on top of the eight already sent — to serve as temporary mortuaries, while some funeral homes are reserving their own trucks from private companies.

'Shame on you': Florida woman, 26, dies of COVID-19 after hospital didn't test her for coronavirus, family says

About two weeks ago, she started having a cough and shortness of breath. She went to the hospital, was diagnosed with pneumonia and was sent home to recover.

However, she was never tested for COVID-19 at the time.
Not testing actually can kill. Why didn't they test her when she first showed up at the hospital? Still not enough tests? Viral pneumonia and bacterial pneumonia are not treated the same, so obviously testing her was important.

U.S. shatters coronavirus record with over 77,000 cases in a day

The loss of 969 lives was the biggest increase since June 10, with Florida, South Carolina and Texas all reporting their biggest one-day spikes on Thursday.

More than 138,000 Americans have died from COVID-19, a toll that experts warn will likely surge following recent record spikes in case numbers and an alarming rise in hospitalizations in many states.

The hardest-hit areas in Texas and Arizona are running out of places to store bodies as their morgues fill up and are bringing in coolers and refrigerated trailers.

According to Worldometer, US had 1002 deaths day before yesterday - which is concerning, as now that's two days in a row with about 1000 deaths.

Cases did jump of course - and it sure looks like the overall death rate is going up. The 3 week lag time for the initial rise is just the beginning. Hopefully, we'll still see a slight downturn in the case mortality rate.

If we get to 100,000 cases a day, then there will be 1 million cases every 10 days. But even as it is right now, we'll be having 1 new million cases in just 13 days (and we can start counting from June 15).

This is extraordinary and terrifying. Hopefully, some of the mask measures will slow the case count - but that will take at least a week to show up n the numbers.

Bumpy ride indeed.

Masks will slow it down, if people actually wear proper masks. Apparently some anti-maskers figured a away around masks laws, by wearing lace or mesh masks that are useless. I guess they think they are really smart. Deaths are going up, that much was obvious. Deaths always lag cases. Also, with hospitals being overwhelmed, even if hospitals know how to treat it better, it's not going to do much good if there is not enough place in hospitals for all the covid infected people.

Frisch said he didn't take the virus seriously until now. He wants others to not wait until it's too late.

"I was one of those 'Oh I don't need a mask, masks don't work, the social distancing thing is stupid,'" he said. "No, that is completely wrong."

BBM and that's why we can't stop the spread IMO- I feel terrible for him losing his only daughter but it is good to see the attitude change now.

I have a friend and she and her boyfriend are stocking up on canned foods. I think i may do the same.
Yes, that's how you get around any power outages. Canned food doesn't have to be refrigerated. I stocked up on canned soups. It's both liquid and food at once. And I don't really want to eat them, so they are perfectly safe until the need arises to eat them. Because if you stock up on good things you actually want to eat, they are gone sooner rather than later.

I agree. I thought every single person that came into a hospital these days was tested for it, especially if somebody had pneumonia. That just not making sense. What hospital was she at? I'll have to relook at that

Capt Sir Tom Moore knighted in 'unique' ceremony

"Captain Sir Tom Moore has been knighted in the Queen's first official engagement in person since lockdown.

The investiture to honour the 100-year-old, who raised more than £32m for NHS charities, was staged in a "unique ceremony" at Windsor Castle.

He has been recognised for walking more than 100 laps of his garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire.

Capt Sir Tom, originally from Keighley, West Yorkshire, said it was "the most special of days for me".

"I am absolutely overawed," he said,

"This is such a high award and to get it from Her Majesty as well - what more can anyone wish for? This has been an absolutely magnificent day for me.

"The money [raised] is very useful but you've only one Queen and when you get a message from the Queen there's no value that can be placed on that."

The Queen personally praised Capt Sir Tom, telling him: "Thank you so much, an amazing amount of money you raised."

In May, Prime Minister Boris Johnson made a special nomination for the war veteran to be knighted.

Buckingham Palace believes it is the first time the ceremony has been held in the strictly socially distanced format.

Ahahaha exactly LOL. I found that out the first week of March when I stocked up on tater tots (which I don’t usually buy), and overdosed into a potato coma, remember that? I actually got sick LOL.

Yes I’ve been focused on meal based items for sustenance, less tasty snacks.

PS: Beer doesn’t last around here either. I just gave up on that lol.

Btw I’m down probably 30 pounds.

Iowa news today: as of 10:00 a.m. today, we have 879 new confirmed cases for a total of 37,616 confirmed cases (IDPH has 37,668 at 11:00 a.m.) of which 27,551 have recovered (IDPH has 27,554 at 11:00). 5 more have passed away for a total of 782.
IMO, this is the highest 24 hr. 10:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. total to date. July 17: 879 new COVID-19 cases in Iowa, state passes 400,000 tests

They're learning...one tragically ironic death/hospitalization at a time.

Regarding the lace masks... It's one thing to vote against your own self-interest, quite another to blatantly act against your self interest.
Imo

I stocked on chocolate and so on. Big mistake. But it was a good chocolate. LOL.

It's definitely weird. Like we're all inside some giant sinister plot, with propaganda and drama and denial and everything at once. That's my definition of weird, anyway.

I have had vivid dreams for 2 nights, involving Huge Storms and such.

I dreamt last night that Dr. Fauci was mine and my dead ex-husband's marriage counselor. At one point Dr. Fauci even got in our bed....LOLLLL

The "power" inclusion bothers me - no idea how to prepare for extended power outage. Thinking of all that food in the freezer..........

Portable solar panels are fairly reasonably priced, we use for camping. All meats can be cooked and "canned" in metal container or glass jars.

It helps growing up in a farm in rural American, we learned years ago not to rely on electricity for our food source. Over the years, with better electric service we tend to forget, the "olden" days.

Many communities have canneries, some even have classes. There is usually a fee to use the cannery and cost per can. Check with your local farm extension agent.

You're amazing! I didn't start until the original poster put up this thread. Then I got busy!

I was referring to the "mood/message" started to change in the US after the 8 or 10 of March, it became more focused and serious.

I ordered my first box of N95s right after New Years day and started stocking up on medical supplies, hand sanitizer, etc. By the end of Jan I had my cupboards well stocked and even toilet paper to supply the family, friends and last til next year.

I have a log burner in my lounge which I can use for cooking in emergencies and the outdoor brick built barbecue too. Also if you have a power cut, leave the freezer closed as it should stay frozen for some time, even without power.

I went out non food/necessity shopping yesterday for the first time since this started and where did I go? Manchester VT to get my sons some gifts for their birthday today. And I chatted with staff in the 4 stores I went to and all were telling me about the local outbreak-my two favorite stores (book & outdoor) were now closed because of the outbreak which I was unaware of-I live across the border in MA and was surprised I hadn't heard about it as my son is working in the area but I have been taking breaks from closely following it.

At least everyone was wearing a mask and socially distancing and only ORVIS had fitting rooms open. But such efforts aren't 100% effective and it doesn't take much non compliance to harm the overall effort. I have to say I agree with those talking about the coming months and worrying we ain't seen nothing yet as we still lack any semblance of an agreed upon national policy which would guide states to appropriate efforts depending on facts on the ground.

I do think those of us in the northeast have the benefit of being affected by the initial stages and proximity to NYC and so there's a real lack of resistance to public health efforts and I see very substantial compliance which I think will serve us well. But we still have unlimited travel in this country and so no one area is an island guaranteed safety.

Small outbreak in Vermont ?

Coronavirus Cases Are Decreasing in Just 2 States, Both in New England: Report

Also, with hospitals being overwhelmed, even if hospitals know how to treat it better, it's not going to do much good if there is not enough place in hospitals for all the covid infected people.

The curve upwards on deaths shows a small but rising uptick about 5-7 days after the case numbers go up, but really hits the top of the curve around 2-4 weeks out. So we wait. In this most recent round of cases, there are proportionately fewer people 80+ and way more 18-44. We're probably still looking at 2% of cases dying, at least (I hope I'm wrong), maybe 3%.

Right now, we stand at ~3.8% known case mortality rate.

That would mean that if we do hit 100,000 new cases a day as some are predicting, we'd see 2000-3800 deaths per day about a month or so after (probably less, since obviously, hospitals will be full, etc). My guess is that it will be 3000 per day.

The people wearing lace masks are despicable and ridiculous. I can't say what I think about this and stay within ToS.

I hope and pray that today's numbers will be the same or slightly better than yesterday's, even though at 75,000 new cases a day, we are still looking at 2,000 deaths per day in future (at the peak, with some deaths occurring early and later than the peak). It'll probably peak at 2200-2500 deaths for a few days.

That's almost one 9-11 event per day.

We're going to be at 150,000 deaths total in about 10 days in any case. So much was preventable.

I'd love to see headlines from everyone's local papers (or close to local). I'm noticing that in some places, CoVid isn't much of a front page story, other places it is. My city's "newspaper" has almost only CoVid news (this is new), because they're closing government buildings (again) and we're down to only 5 ICU beds in the main hospital.

I'm also really curious as to how many of you still have cable television?
