The number of people already infected by the mystery virus emerging in China is far greater than official figures suggest, scientists have told the BBC.
There have been 41 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new virus, but UK experts estimate the figure is closer to 1,700.
New virus in China ‘will have infected hundreds'
Up to 4,500 patients in China may have caught the same strain of coronavirus that has killed two people, scientists fear.
Health officials in Wuhan – the city at the heart of the outbreak which started in December – confirmed four new cases today, taking the total to 48.
But Imperial College London researchers say this may be the 'tip of the iceberg' after analysing flights out of the city.

Hey everyone,

Politicizing is not allowed. We realize it's difficult to separate Covid from politics in this discussion, but ...

If you are going to post about 1 or 1 million people attending a rally, a church event, etc, put on by God knows who, make sure your post indicates how the content of that post relates to Covid19 and isn't just about politics or political figures.

From Tricia's post at the beginning of each of these threads:

NO MATTER HOW FRUSTRATED YOU FEEL, HOW GRATEFUL YOU FEEL OR HOW YOU FEEL WITH ANY OF THE COMMENTS COMING FROM THE WHITEHOUSE OR THEIR ADMINISTRATION DO NOT PUT IT ON THIS THREAD. DO NOT PUT TOGETHER A POST THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A POLITICAL STATEMENT AND THEN TRY AND SAY IT IS NOT.

This post lands at random.

Address the post and NOT the poster.

Snarky, rude and personalizing posts that disrespect or denigrate another member get removed and may result in a permanent Thread Reply Ban or a board Time Out.

Politics, racial tensions, dismantling of statues, and protests are off limits.

If members wish to mention protests as they relate to the potential for spreading of the virus, that's fine, but otherwise it is off limits.

This post lands at random.

It is a violation of TOS to post off topic. Political and other off topic posts have been removed and serious TOs are being issued for those who derail the thread with such posts.

WS does not have a staff of hundreds to deal with all the Reports of TOS violations, not to mention it is very discourteous to members and guests who come here to read about the virus.

Stay on topic or there will be a loss of posting privileges.

If you aren't concerned about Covid then please don't post here with a view to downplaying or minimizing the threat and making others feel that their concerns are not warranted.

If Covid does not concern you, this thread is not for you.

Please read the following message from Tricia:

Dear Everyone,

This will be a quick message.

We need your help as soon as possible to keep Websleuths from going dark.
COVID-19 cut our revenue drastically. We are slowly creeping back up but we are still very short.
I wish I had the money to handle myself but Websleuths is my full time job.

We have two ways to donate
CLICK HERE TO SEND USING WEBSLEUTHS PAYPAL

CLICK HERE TO GET VENMO and the user name on Venmo is Tricia-Griffith-14

Please DO NOT DONATE ONE PENNY unless you can truly afford to do so.

If you have questions please email rather that post here. My email is triciastruecrimeradio@gmail.com

This is urgent. Any donation is appreciated.

Thank you,

I agree that because of COVID some children that have little to no support outsisde of school could suffer and not be able to catch up and that could mean less opportunities in their adult years.
What I don't agree with is that it's because of authorities deciding to online school only. It's COVID-19 that is to blame, not school or government officials. COVID-19 is and will leave a path of destruction that we in our lives have not ever seen.

My daughter-in-law school teacher (5th grade) noticed some interesting things when her school went online in late March. Some kids who did not do well in class did fantastic online. The distraction of a classroom environment was gone. The social kids were the ones who requested the most individual Facetime or zoom instruction and dominated the zoom meetings where lots of classmates were present. She had a few students go completely MIA. Some were English as a second language students and some poorer students without internet unless someone drove them to the school parking lot where they could hook up, even though the school had checked a tablet out to them. Just a few musings as fall approaches. MOO.

Edited to add that she tortured herself over those MIA kids, did everything she could to contact them and offer help, and worried about what was going on with them.

I have a feeling that some decisions by our leaders will have detrimental affects on our future.

I agree. So let's make sure they help our schools get the guidance and resources to provide the very best education in the safest possible environment. That they help control our case numbers by not obstructing safety measures, so we can get back to school full-time as soon as possible.

Let's hold leaders accountable and expect more from them. We will never get back to normal as long as leaders are willing to waste time and money in power plays over something so basic as masks and social distancing (KY attorney general and GA governor for example). All that does is whip up drama, confuse people, and delay our return to NORMAL. Remember normal? I want to go back there so badly :(

I saw this, too! Plus, some kids just seemed healthier once they were off the treadmill of nonstop classes, sports, and clubs. We can see this as an opportunity to reimagine the one-size -fits-all way we do things, and promote healthier habits, too. Maybe more kids can learn to love school if school became a bit more flexible and varied by necessity.

I saw something somewhere, can’t remember if posted, but it made a very valid point, imo:

We need to remember that kids have been home all summer, so while data may say something now, minimal infections, etc., this may not be necessarily reflective of what happens when schools end up opening. IMO, IF someone can have the opportunity to keep them home at least one semester as we “see how how things go”, then this is a good way to go JMO. While we know there are so many reasons why kids need to be in school, the risk of potential serious illness and death trumps all of them imo. Also, imo, we are seeing some effects of even asymtomatic infection, lung damage, iirc, moo. We don’t know what all this virus is capable of doing. It sucks to have to keep them home, but it may be wise to learn more and assess data before making that decision, jmo.

I wonder how many schools are providing laptops for children in elementary school?

What if your first grader has an older tablet that was handed down from an older sibling or kind aunt? Now they need a new Chromebook to be able to access their classes remotely.

I am very concerned about this testing situation.

This needs to be taken seriously and is CORE to fighting this virus.

We are losing this fight more and more every day imo.

We can not afford to downplay the importance of testing, and efficient processing.

My heart breaks more and more every day as I see us declining rapidly, for reasons that we don’t even need to be. Sure there are going to be challenges with the huge demand; however, we have to WANT and really actively TRY to improve the situation. And respect it for what it is.

I saw in China early on, and posted, about the initial long testing lines. One guy said he was sick and waited in line for so long he finally went home.

There are so many dangers if someone is asymptomatic, needs to get a test, but it is very inconvenient or unattainable, so they may blow it off.

Again, the effect of long testing turnaround times on contact tracing is devastating to this essential tool for fighting this virus.

Heart is so heavy. Hugs to everyone.

What exactly is the risk of serious illness and death if children go back to school in the fall?

I thought that we already know that the number of children that get really sick or die from this virus is extremely low.
