I saw this, too! Plus, some kids just seemed healthier once they were off the treadmill of nonstop classes, sports, and clubs. We can see this as an opportunity to reimagine the one-size -fits-all way we do things, and promote healthier habits, too. Maybe more kids can learn to love school if school became a bit more flexible and varied by necessity.

Plus I imagine schoolchildren that feel victimised through bullying or by being left out of things by other children or are mocked because their clothes aren't cool enough may benefit from online schooling.

Is anyone concerned about "fairness" in terms of closures and some people's ability to escape them? Everything "indoors" in California is supposed to be closed, but the tribal casinos are packed. New York residents who have the means are able to travel to States/Countries that are way more "open," and then come home when everyone else has crushed the virus through lock down.

I'm fortunate enough to live in an area where one has a choice, but I think I'd be quite cross if I didn't and my neighbor did. Although, to be honest, I really did feel "better" when the lock down compelled me to live a healthier lifestyle. Hopefully tomorrow brings us better news.

3M people over 65 live with school-aged children: analysis

“One of the biggest questions facing public health officials amid the COVID pandemic this summer is how exactly to get students back into school in the fall.

Among the complications: About 3.3 million adults older than 65 years old live in a household with school-aged children, according to a new KFF Analysis. These older adults, about 6% of the senior population in the U.S., live with 4.1 million school-aged children.

While children appear to be a lower risk for COVID-19 infection or serious complications from the virus, older adults — as well as people of all ages with serious medical conditions such as heart disease or diabetes — are among the high-risk groups for developing serious complications, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.“

What exactly is the risk of serious illness and death if children go back to school in the fall?

I thought that we already know that the number of children that get really sick or die from this virus is extremely low.

Perhaps increased exposure of the children could lead to more incidences of this (below)?
I don't think I would want to knowingly gamble with my child's health.
There are 342 families out there who are going through this terrible time with their child. I wouldn't want my child to be #343, #344, or any further case.

July 17, 2020 - 03:54 GMT - US counts 342 child inflammatory syndrome cases
An official with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said the most recent count shows 342 US children and teens have developed a serious inflammatory condition linked to COVID-19 infections.

Dr Ermias Belay told physicians that among the US cases reported as of July 15, the average age was eight and most children were aged between one and 14.

Here’s another thing:

The WHO has access to so many resources, connections. We need them now more than ever in this situation. I know that they have close relationships and constant direct communication and long standing relationships with CDC, HHS, and have US entities with which they collaborate, so this gives me hope that they are still trying to help us. But how can they provide help to us if we may disconnected from them and not willing to accept help. I think they will continue to do their job and provide assistance as necessary, because that’s what they do. Their effort is to help people and save lives, period. I’m just thinking about this as I wonder if WHO can and will help us with this testing situation. I think and hope they will help us if we need help. Officially, last time I heard, they are still working with the United States. Dr. Mike has said a while back that he has had communication with Dr. Fauci, in fact mentioning his respect for Dr. Fauci and calling him “legendary” or something along those lines.

During the quarantine, there was a sharp decrease in anxiety and depression screenings in teens across the county, which Peltier said was due to patients not being seen by their pediatricians and students not being inside classrooms, where teachers and aides can often address such matters.

Or, possibly, due to school causing children to experience more anxiety and depression. Can't be ruled out.

20-minute blood test

Researchers in Australia have devised a test that can determine novel coronavirus infection in about 20 minutes using blood samples in what they say is a world-first breakthrough.

The researchers at Monash University said their test can determine if someone is currently infected and if they have been infected in the past.

"Short-term applications include rapid case identification and contact tracing to limit viral spread, while population screening to determine the extent of viral infection across communities is a longer-term need," the researchers said in a paper published in the journal ACS Sensors on Friday.

Kids can get sick from other illness from going to school and interacting with other children.

Does that mean we should eliminate schools forever?

NBA 2020 return: Disney World bubble safety aided by technology

“They login to the NBA’s MyHealth app that they downloaded on their phone shortly after arriving. They complete a symptom questionnaire detailing any ailments, including cough, breathing issues, fever, body aches, headache, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, fatigue, congestion or runny nose. They hold Kinsa, a Bluetooth-enabled smart thermometer, under their tongue for about eight seconds. Once the device beeps, they log their temperature into the app. They insert one of their fingers into Masimo, a pulse oximeter that measures oxygen levels. Then they report those numbers in the app, too.

Dr. John DiFiori, the NBA’s Director of Sports Medicine, stressed that “testing is really the foundation,” as well as social distancing, face coverings and hand washing. Yet, the devices provide an added purpose.“

IMO it's about how normal school life might rapidly promote spread of the virus throughout the whole population, because everyone goes home every day. Parents know well, how every winter various colds and flus are spread through families via kids in school.

Of course not.

Hopefully you are coming at this from a parental angle. Most avoid their child getting sick and infecting other children. Isolate for chickenpox, isolate for measles, keep them home if they are ill with the flu, rush them to the doctors when their fevers spike, don't let them have a playdate with little Johnnie if Johnie is unwell but bored ....

There will be, hopefully, a safer time when covid is under control. You guys do plan - as a nation - in getting covid under control, don't you? Because sometimes I wonder exactly what direction the US is headed in.

How deadly is COVID-19 for children? Here's what we know

One is the key number there. There have been 7,888 cases of COVID-19 in patients under the age of 20 in Canada, according to Public Health Agency of Canada data last updated Monday night. Of those thousands of young infected patients, only one has died.

We know that the one young Canadian to die after contracting COVID-19 is female, but nothing else – not their age, not whether their medical history left them at higher risk of serious complications from infection, not even if they died because of COVID-19 or died of something else after being diagnosed with the disease.

In many of the cases where children have died after contracting COVID-19, Freedman said, there is little evidence that it was actually the virus that killed them.

"They often are high-risk children who have significant co-morbidities that place them at risk for significant outcomes with any virus," he said.

For first time, world records 1 million coronavirus cases in 100 hours - Reuters tally

(Reuters) - Global coronavirus infections passed 14 million on Friday, according to a Reuters tally, marking the first time there has been a surge of 1 million cases in under 100 hours.

The first case was reported in China in early January and it took three months to reach 1 million cases. It has taken just four days to climb to 14 million cases from 13 million recorded on July 13.
The United States, with more than 3.6 million confirmed cases, is still seeing huge daily jumps in its first wave of COVID-19 infections. The United States reported a daily global record of more than 77,000 new infections on Thursday, while Sweden has reported 77,281 total cases since the pandemic began.

Despite the surging cases, a cultural divide is growing in the country over wearing masks to slow the spread of the virus, a precaution routinely taken in many other nations.

U.S. President Donald Trump and his followers have resisted a full-throated endorsement of masks and have been calling for a return to normal economic activity and reopening schools despite the surging cases.

Other hard-hit countries have “flattened the curve” and are easing lockdowns put in place to slow the spread of the novel virus while others, such as the cities of Barcelona and Melbourne, are implementing a second round of local shutdowns.

Globally, 250,000 a day infected over last 4 days.
When does the expodendential growth supersede testing ability?

What makes you think that Americans are not planning on getting Covid-19 under control? No one wants people to get sick or die from this disease.

There is a difference of opinion on things but I think the goal is mutual.

Thanks, copying over to MIS-C thread.

I’m really wondering (and worried about) how much MIS-C cases may rise.
