Subject is healthcare and the mixing of the term universal healthcare with socialism or thought of as socialistic -

Who here said it was? I missed that. Jmo.

Fwiw, I have seen the suggestion of healthcare for all in the USA called socialism many times in these threads, including a reference that Canada's healthcare is socialism and not universal. Canada takes care of everyone, as best we can, by providing healthcare to all instead of turning people away from hospitals or a Dr's office when they are sick or about to give birth etc. We are one of many countries that have universal healthcare.

I don't understand how anyone can go along with one US citizen having access to healthcare but turning many others, including children, away from seeing a doctor. Seems draconian, that US citizens don't really care about each other and downright mean imo.

President Trump says the treatment he received will be provided free to everyone. Is he talking about the drugs only, or the entire course of treatment? Hospital stay, labs, imaging, doctor fees, transportation? What's the plan, here? Is it published anywhere yet?

That is definitely interesting. I wonder if that will be included in some sort of national Healthcare initiative.

Iowa news today: As of 10:00-11:00 a.m., we had 1,184 new confirmed cases for a total of 97,041 of which 75,041 had recovered (+871). 14 were reported to have passed for a total of 1,433. Hospitlization continues to increase with 461 in the hospital with 77 new hospitalizations in the last 24 hrs. There are 22,000 active cases. Oct. 9: 1,184 new cases as hospitalizations continue reaching all-time high

I'm not sure what is going on. I'm keeping an eye out for some kind of press release or outline of the plan in the next few days. He most definitely said the treatment he received would be provided free to all Americans. Hopefully, the details will be provided soon. Covid is going to explode again over the coming winter, which has already started. We don't have a lot of time here.

I think we're having a national conversation on different models of health care, and we're trying to strike a balance between socialized medicine and yet the option for private care. Canada allows for both at this time, and this evolved, as I understand. The wealthy buy private plans, and many of them travel to the U.S. for specialized care. That is often because of the rationing that goes along with socialized health care. Each country has to decide the pros and cons of various systems of health care and decide the direction they want to go.

I think Canadians pay about $3,000 a year or so in taxes to be covered by socialized medicine, and will look for the study, I read it a few months ago. Will look for the link. Not sure about other countries, for example, the UK, maybe @tresir2012 can enlighten us. Will U.S. citizens agree to this cost? That is only one of the issues, of course.

Rationed health care for people who are used to having more choices in their health care will be hard for Americans to get used to. As I said, there are pros and cons. The people of each nation get to decide.

Some of us posted about it several threads ago. I'll see if I can search for anyone interested.

So Colorado’s new case 7 day average hit an all time high yesterday, yet last night only one of the three local news broadcasts I watched mentioned COVID stats at all. And that one failed to mention we’d reached any kind of milestone. Is this typical for most local news stations ?

If we need people to wear masks then we first need to communicate the problem is getting worse. Lots of people don’t have their thumb on stats like we do and if they’re getting their info from local TV news they have no clue the situation is worse than ever.

It doesn’t help that Colorado inexplicably revamped the State’s COVID website months ago removing trend charts from the landing page and showing only the current daily counts. Without seeing the longterm trend for new cases, hospitalizations and deaths the numbers probably mean very little to many people.

Seems to me the Governors office may be more interested in boasting about what a great job CO (he) is doing managing COVID compared to other states than in saving lives. But maybe not. Is this happening in other places too?

The chart below I pulled from the New York Times. You have to hunt to find it on the State’s websight, if it’s even there at all.

I don't understand. It is illegal to campaign on federal property. Unless there has been some kind of emergency exception given because of covid? I would understand if exceptions have been granted due to the pandemic, but I haven't seen any modifications to the Hatch Act due to covid...?
I’m watching the news and sounds like the event is a Law and Order conference and not a campaign event.

I think it's already exploding - it's very hard to explain what's going on in UK and France (and Germany too and, well, most EU nations - but UK and France are particularly back in the thick of it).

France has posted a whopping 20,000+ cases just today, after jumping up to 18,000+ for 2 days prior. Deaths are on the rise - but it will be 3-8 weeks for these cases to have much effect on mortality. Hospitals in Paris are swamped, elective and many other procedures canceled. 50% of people testing positive are ending up in the hospital according to French press. That's a lot.

UK may not be done posting today, but yesterday they were at 17,000+ new cases. I don't know the hospitalization rate.

These two nations are about 50% more populous than California, for comparison. CA posted 3600 cases yesterday (too early for today's numbers). So if California had 50% more cases, it would sit at about 5400 cases - meaning that both UK and France have 3X the rate of new CoVid as California (which is on a plateau right now - we shall see what happens next).

As I understand it, both UK is now at its highest daily rate, ever. To put it another way, 1 in 170 in the UK have CoVid ( Covid-19 news: One in 170 people in England have coronavirus ). France looks like it will set a new record today as well.

When reading the UK graphs, the Guardian reminds us that Oct 3 and 4 had extra numbers dumped into those days when errors in previous reporting were found:

Covid cases and deaths today: coronavirus UK map

But even without that blip, UK is way above where it was just last week.

How does the Hatch Act apply here?

(This is a WH event about Law and Order)

President Donald Trump is scheduled to host his first in-person event since testing positive for the coronavirus on Saturday at the White House discussing "law and order," despite evidence of a growing coronavirus outbreak at the White House this week.

The event will feature "remarks to peaceful protesters for law and order" by the president, according to an invite obtained by ABC News and confirmed by two White House sources familiar with the planning.

Trump according to a source is expected to address the crowd from the balcony of the White House.

Great analysis - very worrying. I think it's the same in France (you really have to dig through their major newspapers to find meaningful CoVid information - although it looks like bad weather and bad news have combined to keep people out of Paris, a hot spot, and mask wearing seems to be around 80%).

Are people already spending more time indoors? Did indoor businesses reopen partially?

Is this the event that's being held on NPS land in the mall? What are the gates opening to, is what I'm wondering (I think it's the Mall). The Mall police have a big CoVid outbreak (40+ cases, IIRC). Park rangers are few in number.

It has the potential to be a very big crowd of Trump supporters.
