Lol ... of course you are right. Somehow my mind thinks of the Asian countries being mostly in the southern hemisphere (no, believe it or not, I didn't bomb out in Geography in school). o_O

What is incredibly good is how relatively well Africa is doing ... considering their massive population, and under-resourced systems.

some countries' populations in Africa are relatively "young" so the impact on the elderly could be less

Who is the "we" in your proposal? State officials? Chance encounters? A concerted effort by volunteers (how would that get done)?

Most of us do not personally know these leaders, so a cold call from some random person like you or me isn't going to result in much change - or do you think it would?

Society-at-large can't approach people, there have to be specific encounters and teaching moments. How would you propose to arrange this for the thousands of defiant church leaders? Truly curious.

When I saw "we" I mean a concerted effort to educate people about this virus at the state level. Every state has a state health agency, and this is where the organization should take place, IMO.

But, I also mean each and every one of us on a personal level because we all share this world and we all share a measure of responsibility for our fellow man. At least that's how I see it.

Maybe because I've worked with many non-profits, I've become accustomed to seeing how ordinary people can change society. Like-minded people get together, form groups, approach leaders, explain how and why change is necessary. How many times have we seen a grieving parent garner support and make a difference? That's how programs like Amber Alert take root.

There's no difference when it comes to this virus and any potential future viruses. You don't have to personally know a recalcitrant pastor and his flock of sheep to analyze good ways to approach this type of personality about the virus.

Others here have shared stories about how they grew up in similar religious situations and how the mindset within those groups is opposed to trusting the government.

We know we're dealing with skeptical people, so the question is--what's the best way to convince them that this virus is deadly? I'm asking that question very seriously.

Quite honestly, if 235,000 deaths haven't convinced them already, are they ever going to take it seriously?

Unfortunately, the only way that I have seen non-believers change their mind is through this ....

A Florida man who thought the coronavirus was "a fake crisis" has changed his mind after he and his wife contracted COVID-19.
"Been home sick for over a week. Both my wife and I home sick ... I've got no energy and all I want to do is sleep."
A day later, Hitchens and his wife, Erin, were admitted to Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, Hitchens said in a Facebook post.
He thought the coronavirus was 'a fake crisis.' Then he contracted it.

The best opportunity was lost (IMO) when the president downplayed his own bout of covid. "I feel great". Because he received the kind of medical treatment that likely no-one else is receiving.

A good story about the FL man. However, the naysayers still aren't going to listen.

Another new record .....

Thursday saw at least 121,054 new cases nationwide, according to Johns Hopkins University. There were at least 1,187 reported deaths, a near 20% increase from the same day last week.

In just 10 months, more than 9.6 million people in the US have been infected with coronavirus, and more than 234,000 have died. Hospitalizations are also surging nationwide, with more than 53,000 people hospitalized with coronavirus on Thursday.

6257 cases on Thursday.
Florida is still raging-- and we are still sunny and warm. I can't imagine what we would be like without that sun....

The last time the state reported a single-day increase of over 6,000 new COVID-19 cases was on Sept. 1

The Florida Department of Health also confirmed 39 new deaths Thursday, bringing the death toll from COVID-19 to 16,961.

I don't think we can afford to give up on helping them understand--too much is at stake, including the lives of our loved ones.

I agree that the example you used is the quickest way for anyone to get hit with a dose of reality, but it's also the way we hope it doesn't happen.

Are you ready to just throw in the towel, then? I'm not. I firmly believe that--with some effort and good intentions--we can change hearts and minds.

The first article you listed is just excellent. Excellent. The evolution of this disease is just so critical, and the increasing understanding of the endothelium, and endothelial dysfunction is saying a lot.
Clots, Strokes And Rashes. Is COVID-19 A Disease Of The Blood Vessels?

I am keeping this article for continual reference, because it truly does show how much more we are learning about the deadly effects of Covid. It also references one of our/my favorite doctors, Roger Seheult, who was one of the first to really hone in on and explain oxidative stress.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a study published this summer, Li and an international team of researchers compared the lung tissues of people who died from COVID-19 with those who died from influenza.

They found stark differences: The lung tissues of COVID-19 patients had nine times as many tiny blood clots ("microthrombi'') compared with those of the influenza patients, and the coronavirus-infected lungs also exhibited "severe endothelial injury.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Early in the pandemic, Roger Seheult, a critical care and pulmonary physician in Southern California, realized the patients he expected to be most vulnerable to a respiratory virus, those with underlying lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, were not the ones ending up disproportionately in his intensive care unit.

Seheult, who runs the popular medical education website called MedCram, says, "Instead, what we are seeing are patients who are obese, people who have large BMIs, people who have Type 2 diabetes and with high blood pressure."

For starters, Even though so late in the game, we need strong national public service programs to people. They have worked with other health issues in the past.
Thousands of people who were never in an accident, started wearing seatbelts.
Thousands of people started to understand how ugly all that litter was on the highways.

I don't know if America can experience compassion and empathy, anymore, but it sure is worth a try......
Compassion for allllll those health care workers risking their lives;
And empathy for all the families who have lost loved ones

Is it impossible? I don't think so. But it going to take a shiteload of work.

Missouri poll worker with COVID-19 still worked shift, died after election — New York Post

“A Missouri poll supervisor worked on Election Day despite knowing they were infected with the coronavirus — and has since died, local officials said Thursday

The election judge supervisor in St. Charles County got a positive COVID-19 test back on Oct. 30 and broke the recommended 14-day quarantine period to work at a polling site, county health officials said.”

A poll worker knew she had the coronavirus and worked Election Day anyway. She died soon after. — The Washington Post

“Less than a week before Election Day, an election judge supervisor in Missouri who was scheduled to work the polls got her coronavirus test results. She was positive, a private lab told her on Oct. 30, which meant she had to isolate for two weeks.

Instead, the unidentified St. Charles County, Mo., resident showed up and worked the polls on Tuesday.

At first, St. Charles County election officials told poll workers they would not be required to wear masks on Election Day, the Post-Dispatch reported. In September, the paper reported that election officials also told poll workers in a leaked email to “act surprised” if voters asked why they were not wearing masks. But the county walked back that advice after blowback.”

Wow.

Maybe it's like a faith thing. If you believe it, it's real?

there are still people, religious and otherwise, who believe that you just get it and what happens, happens- if you are not impacted too much, great. If you die, so be it. They really believe that.

Sadly, I sometimes believe that the virus just takes whomever is vulnerable. Not that people should not be cautious, and follow health measures, but I think I am seeing what everyone thought was an NYC phenomenon cut across the country. As with what I have read about the Spanish flu, the virus takes more time to get to remote and rural places, but it travels. I think there is an enormous urge to have this virus be "someone else's problem," thus the naming hoohaw, but it is a pandemic, so no one is safe. It is also so tempting to say that one does not have underlying conditions and is therefore safe but there is a Russian roulette aspect to the virus the way it just hurts and kills seemingly randomly. We want to find out exactly what factors make a person susceptible but we cannot totally pin that down. We have all these statistics on age, sex, ethnicity, blood type... and the virus rolls on. IMHO

Not their best idea imo. We’ll see how it goes

By State House News Service
State officials are committed to keeping the health care system open during a second surge of the coronavirus pandemic, the head of the Baker administration's COVID-19 command center said Friday.

Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders, speaking during a webinar hosted by the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans, said the state would work with hospitals, providers and insurers to "engage in more nuanced planning in order to maintain access throughout the fall and winter."

As COVID-19 cases first began to climb in Massachusetts, a March 15 order from Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel mandated that Massachusetts hospitals cancel non-essential elective procedures. Non-emergency procedures started to resume in May, as the state embarked on the earliest stages of its economic and social reopening after the initial surge peaked in mid-April.

"We've learned a lot from the spring," Sudders said. "It's easy to shut things down. It's hard to reopen things and have people feel confident that it's safe, that they can go for health care services, non-COVID treatments and the like, and we have made a commitment to work with the hospital and health care industry on how to keep services and treatments, procedures open while we manage through COVID."

The terrible thing is that, despite all we have learned about treatments, there will be many more deaths.

Is there any more info about all Americans needing it getting the same treatment as the president? Is that going to happen yet?

From your linked article:

"Our number of hospitalized people goes up every day. These are a lot of Kentuckians who are fighting for their lives," Gov. Andy Beshear said Wednesday.
"There's a lot of pain out there and it's hitting everybody."

Across the US, more than 52,000 people are hospitalized Wednesday with coronavirus, according to the Covid Tracking Project.

Coronavirus is spreading so rampantly in El Paso County that a fourth mobile morgue was headed to the area this week.

From curfews to mask mandates to crowd control, other state and local officials are scrambling to control Covid-19 during what doctors say will be the worst surge yet.

ETA Just jumping off your post SA, not aimed specifically at you...

Umm, FOURTH mobile morgue...still not a genocide? Scary, scary, scary stuff...
