The cab video was brutal.

Thanks to whomever posted the Dr Eric Feigl Ding
link. Just watched a video on his site, entitled
'Wuhan citizen plainly tells the #coronavirus situation'.
A young lad describes his experience and fears the consequence
of his honesty.

You guys all rock. Thanks for the links. Thank you @Bravo for grabbing that SARS link. This is a good group in here. I feel like most of us have known for each other for years. Wait, we have known each other for years lol.

Like @Medstudies said, I don’t want to be a drama queen but this is just SO BAD. I’m trying to wrap my head around all this academically and scientifically, as well as emotionally, and I’m just SICK.

Ok I’ll stop saying that now and try to post something productive.

You know, I mentioned something casually to a friend yesterday just to gauge his reaction, oh I know what it was, it was this article about the standoff:

Coronavirus outbreak: Passengers refuse to board flight with Wuhan travelers in 5-hour standoff
January 28, 2020
https://nypost.com/2020/01/28/coron...ight-with-wuhan-travelers-in-5-hour-standoff/

Anyway, he says, “oh, there’s always something, swine flu, bird flu, I’m not too worried about it.”

Which is TRUE, and fine if he doesn’t want to get wrapped up in it, I totally get that - my point is that there are many people who probably feel the same way he does, but not surprisingly, some of us here are following this closely. And it’s not about “panicking”, as some might say or think. Panicking is stupid and useless. We all know that.

Anyway, don’t mean to ramble, just saying it’s good to be with some like minds to actually discuss this. This is serious business. If it was media hype or something, that would be different, but it’s not...sure people get sick every day and die, cancer, etc...this is different because of the virus’ explosively transmittable nature and it’s infinite ripple effects...

Thanks for listening, sorry having trouble expressing myself, like @Tadpole12 said, that video was brutal. I’m still reeling from that.

ETA: AND what’s also bothering me is the dividing nature of some of this, almost war-like, like that “stand-off” above. It’s all just so much bad energy on so many levels. Yes people do come together in times of trouble. We will need a lot of those articles to balance off the others if we can find them. But it’s hard for people to come together when there is risk of infecting each other. The two are opposite, as we saw in that awful cab/Uber video.

Thankfully, there are many that have come together to deal with this.

IMO all we can do is follow what is put out. Avoid places where it's active. Wash, wash and wash your hands. Should be doing it anyway to avoid other bugs. Don't panic but be diligent in usual hygiene practices. I always carry hand bac in my purse all year round but my work exposes me to all kinds of nasty. Years ago when I had to do Clinical Placements at an Institution I wasn't so diligent as I am now. I caught everything. You name it I got it. Including a nasty boil in the middle of my forehead :D Then I seemed to be immune for years. We are exposed to many germs on a daily basis which is how we build immunity. So literally sterilizing yourself daily really isn't a good idea.

On FlightAware, it looks like in addition to the US plane out of Wuhan today, so far today there were also two more out to Moscow and Rome Italy. It looks as if Moscow and Rome are two that are flying out almost daily/every other day.

Coronavirus: Britons will not fly home from Wuhan on Thursday

A planned flight to bring British nationals back to the UK from coronavirus-hit Wuhan will not take place on Thursday.

The British Government had anticipated flying around 200 UK citizens out of the country but it is understood Chinese officials have not yet granted permission for the chartered flight to depart.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We are doing everything we can to get British people in Wuhan safely back to the UK. A number of countries’ flights have been unable to take off as planned.

Britons returning from Wuhan will be put in quarantine for 14 days.

Officials are looking at taking passengers to a military base once they arrive home, the Department of Health said on Wednesday

The move comes after Britons returning to the UK expressed fury after being told they must “self-isolate” – while also making their own way home from the airport.

Previous advice from Public Health England (PHE) was for those returning to stay at home for 14 days.

But Britons due to board the flight back from Wuhan said they had been told by authorities to make their own way through the city to Wuhan airport, and once they land on British soil they are expected to make their own way home, potentially coming into contact with hundreds of people on the way.

A boil in the middle of your forehead? (Like the nursery rhyme with a curl in the middle of her forehead? When she was good, she was very, very good. But when she was bad, she was horrid. :) )

My daughter once had boil on her knee when she was a kid. It was painful. Can't imagine one on your face, poor dear.

LOL it was more embarrassing than anything. Especially when I ran into many really hot Med Students who looked like they stepped out of a GQ mag. They told me to cover it with a band-aid and show up.

I was just typing the same thing.

OMG.

You saw how the sick man was kicked out of the car.

Dear God.

Ok. Pulling it together.
If the passengers are sick, they will not make their way home alone. The 14-day at-home quarantine is if they don't have symptoms, don't feel sick, don't have a fever, etc.

I know the virus might be transmitted before symptoms appear, but just want to not panic that sick people are being sent out among the public hacking and coughing.

I think it's going to be a watch and wait until this gets contained. Many brilliant minds hard at work on this. IMO it will be many months before this is contained

Exactly, this is reflected in the great notes that @Inthedetails posted above.

Let me grab those. We could use some positive, hopeful notes.

ETA / BBMing positive notes:

Brief recap (based on highlights that interested me, but nothing particularly new)

* Emergency committee meeting tomorrow. Will have another press conference tomorrow evening (Geneva time).
* Dr. Ryan from WHO was in China, met with health authorities in China.
* Evidence of increasing number of cases, and human-t0-human transmission. Of great concern. Spurring countries into action.
* Overwhelming number of cases in China.
* 71 cases in 15 other countries. Most associated with travel to China.
* Many experience minor ailments. 2% of patients died.
* Transmitted via close contact, droplets.
* Prevention - keep distance, good hand hygiene.
* Sick people should seek health care, especially if trouble breathing.
* Impressed with Chinese government at all levels. Have never seen the scale of such a response. Highly organized.
* Lab in China contacted Germany about a case - China is actively reaching out with info.
* International experts are in China to work with Chinese.
* Chinese contributing to international knowledge about the disease.
* Best minds in the world working on this.
* WHO is helping countries with response plans.
* All 15 countries with cases are taking action, some with assistance from WHO.

* Whole world needs to be ready and WHO is supplying information.
* Challenge for countries with weaker public health system.
* Disease spreading, but possible to interrupt the transmission chains.
* Emergency committee will consider declaring global health emergency, to coordinate response.

I didn't listen to the questions from journalists. Event is still live, or replay later if you want to hear questions.

Wait, emergency committee “will consider” declaring global health emergency? So that’s what they’ll do tomorrow in the PC, I bet. Declare a “Global Health Emergency, to help coordinate response”.
